Chapter 88: Chapter 88: The World Has Changed Once Again
Ji Ming stared at the small screen on his watch, his expression frozen with shock. However, he tried to rub his eyes and look at the date, it was still 13/09.
"But... it was 10/09 last night," he muttered in sheer horror.
Everyone turned to him, expecting it to be a joke or a mistake from him, but when he repeated himself again with disbelief, everyone’s hearts skipped a beat. It didn’t look like he was joking at all.
And if he was right, that means they had actually been asleep for three whole days.
"No way..." Zhao Ren said in disbelief. "We thought we were waking up on the next day... It should be Monday... right."
"But it’s Thursday," Ji Ming confirmed with his shaken voice.
A heavy silence fell over them as the realization settled in. No one wanted to believe it. It didn’t make sense. Not one of them had even stirred in their sleep. Not even once. And now they had lost three whole days without even knowing it.
"What the hell is going on?" Liora whispered. She couldn’t believe someone could sleep straight for three whole days without even stirring. Is someone fucking kidding her? But how much she tried to deny it, the truth would remain the same, and no one could change it.
Without another word, the group moved quickly, almost stumbling over each other as they rushed toward the window to see what the world outside had become. The moment they peeked through the dusty glass, their breath caught in their throats.
It was chaos. But not the kind they were used to.
The streets were crawling with massive insects — creatures they had never seen before. Giant mosquitoes with long, piercing legs buzzed through the air. Swarms of beetles were marching in lines. Their size was almost equal to a big dog.
There were even spiders, mantises, and other twisted forms of insects that looked straight out of nightmares. And all of them were huge. Far too huge to even believe.
Compared to them, the zombies looked small and fragile. And what was more shocking — the insects were actually attacking the zombies.
"Are they all mutated?" Shen Haoran asked, unable to look away. "How did this happen in just three days?"
A thick-legged mantis crushed a zombie’s skull underfoot. A group of beetles dragged another body into a hole like it was prey. The sound of buzzing wings, crunching bones, and screeching filled the air.
"They’re... killing the zombies?" Yun Shuo whispered with wide eyes.
"More like they were preparing their meal," Ji Ming added. He was standing beside startled Yun Shuo.
And soon Ji Ming was proven right, as a big-headed mantis pierced zombie heads with its foreleg and crushed open its head before eating the crystal with a crunch...
"Fuck! Are they killing zombies for crystals...? Damn, they don’t look mindless like zombies at all. If so, they are behaving like level 2 or level 3 zombies," Zhao Ren commented as he studied their behavior.
And it looked like the majority of zombies that were killed were actually level 1. There were very few zombies with level 2, and they were also fighting with tooth and nail against the mutated insects.
Now it seemed that every species had turned against each other. All were trying to survive and become stronger in this new world.
Liora’s eyes scanned the horrifying scene, her mind racing with countless thoughts. She couldn’t make sense of it. Not yet. But one thing she did know was her skin was crawling just by looking at the size of these insects and their disgusting bodies.
When they were small, she was already very disgusted with them, but now, looking at their huge bodies, Liora could not describe her inner feeling. It’s like looking at an insect while zooming in 10x on it.
She couldn’t hold it in anymore. She rushed towards one corner and instantly gagged, but nothing came out as she was on an empty stomach. There was nothing in her stomach, not even water.
Her gag attracted everyone, and all rushed to comfort her. But she stopped them and took a deep breath to calm herself down...
It was not the kind of fear or anything — she was just disgusted with these crawling insects. Her skin would prickle whenever she was near them, even though she would not bat an eye in front of zombies or gore.
Maybe she had to change her mindset and adapt to the new reality — that they were actually big animals rather than those disgusting insects. Yeah! That’s it. She would not compare them with those insects and lizards.
Now, remembering lizards... What if they also became big? Liora shuddered at the thought, and her whole body shook, and her face lost all its luster.
Even if she encountered a fucking big asshole lizard, she would assume it was just a crocodile and nothing more. No need to fear those slimy things.
"Are you alright, Liora? You look pale," Mei asked with concern as she approached her figure.
Liora smiled weakly and said in a low voice, "Nothing. I just hate insects, and you know, seeing them this large triggered a very bad memory... I will be fine in a few minutes."
Mei nodded as she understood Liora, because being a girl she also feared these insects, but as she grew up, this fear reduced more and more. But everyone’s case was not like hers, and there was no need for everyone to be the same.
Every person is afraid or disgusted with something — either boys or girls. It’s just that most of the girls hate insects, and Liora was one of them.
The others nodded silently, their faces were also pale, as they watched the monsters outside reshape their world. Now they had to fear this aside from zombies too. Day by day, their survival was becoming harder.
No one spoke for a long time as they were all busy with the thoughts of their future. If being truthful, they could not even see their future at all.
The insects outside continued their terrifying march — their legs crushing bones, their wings slicing through the air. It was a sight none of them could have imagined — a nightmare that felt even worse than the first day the world ended.
