Chapter 81: Chapter 81: I don’t want to die...

Blood was everywhere.

The walls, the floor, the curtains, they were painted in it. The air reeked of iron and death. And Han Xiu, or whatever remained of him, was still not satisfied.

An Ran stumbled over Sun Tao’s lifeless body, her knees buckling as she fell hard. Her hands slipped on the blood-soaked floor, and she screamed as she saw Sun Tao’s eyes still wide open, locked in terror even in death.

What had happened? Were they not fine just moments ago... then why? Why did Han Xiu become a zombie and kill his own sworn brother? An Ran’s eyes flooded with tears as she begged from the heavens.

What did they do to deserve this? Why did he steal the only man she had loved for her entire youth? And why did he have to die such a horrible death, and by his own brother...? An Ran said with a choked sob, why has the heaven been so unfair?

Was not her Sun Tao a good man? He had never done anything wrong. He was the kindest and gentlest man she had ever seen. Does he deserve this death? Why do good people not live long?

An Ran’s eyes fell on Han Xiu’s cloudy eyes, and it seemed they were constantly flickering, but soon it was overpowered, and his eyes completely lost their luster and were clouded with madness and hunger.

Zhang Wei had managed to pull the heavy wardrobe aside. Now he regretted why they had blocked the door in such a way. Now he could only regret and remove all the blockages with sheer frustration and hopelessness. There was no time to think. If they did not get out of this room, then no one would survive at all. It was better to run while Han Xiu was still in a daze.

So he clawed at the furniture with desperation. He did not want to die so young, and the outcome of Sun Tao was enough to make his resolution harder. He tried to squeeze through the narrow space, but his legs betrayed him. He slipped hard on the floor, and a chair fell loudly to the floor because of his carelessness.

That sound caught Han Xiu’s attention.

The zombie’s head snapped toward him with a jerky motion, like a broken marionette sensing prey.

"Help me! Please—someone help me!" Zhang Wei shrieked, kicking his legs to push himself through. He was terrified as the hungry gaze of the zombie fell on him. Now all his reasoning was gone. He could not even think about standing up, let alone fighting this zombie.

But he was still too slow.

Han Xiu lunged at him with full force.

His claws tore into Zhang Wei’s calf, dragging him back into the room with the same speed he had tried to run. Zhang Wei kicked and screamed with all his might, sobbing like a child. His nails broke as he tried to cling to the doorframe.

But nothing worked... he could only cry helplessly as he collided with the headless body of Sun Tao.

"Please! I don’t want to die... I don’t want to—!"

A wet crunch silenced him.

Han Xiu sank his teeth into the side of Zhang Wei’s neck, ripping it open like paper. Blood fountained, coating the wall in thick red streaks. The scream turned into a gurgle and then faded with the pitter-patter of the rain.

Only two were left.

Xu Mei and An Ran.

An Ran had hidden behind the toppled desk, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as she tried to hold her breath. Tears streamed down her face, and every fiber of her body begged her not to move. Not to breathe. Not to make a sound.

But Xu Mei wasn’t so lucky.

She had grabbed a broken leg of a chair and now stood trembling in the center of the room, trying to face the monster that had once been their friend.

"Han Xiu... you bastard," she whispered, more to herself than to him. "You were supposed to be strong... we trusted you... were you not our protector? Then why... why are you killing us?"

The zombie did not show any sign of recognition. It only growled, blood dripping from its chin. It didn’t care for memories. It only craved flesh.

With a snarl, it charged towards her.

Xu Mei screamed and swung the chair leg, hitting it across the face with all her might. It staggered for a second—but only a second. Then it grabbed her wrist and sank its teeth into her shoulder.

Her scream shattered the room.

The pain was unbearable. Her flesh was slowly tearing apart like pieces of chunk. Her legs gave out, and she fell with the monster on top of her. It pinned her down and ripped through her flesh, piece by piece.

Her screams grew fainter.

And then silence returned.

Thick, suffocating silence.

The zombie sat in the middle of the room, now littered with mangled corpses and broken furniture. It was panting, blood covering every inch of its skin. It slowly ate his already fallen friends’ flesh, with soft crunch and wet sound.

An Ran could not move. Her body was frozen, not from fear alone, but from the kind of soul-deep horror that leaves a scar no time could ever heal. She stared through the gap beneath the desk, her nails digging into her arms so hard they bled, just to keep herself from screaming.

The wet squelch of flesh being chewed filled her ears—the crack of bone, the slurp of torn muscle, the way Han Xiu... no, that thing—ripped into Xu Mei’s chest like she was nothing more than meat.

The once-lively room where they had laughed just hours ago had turned into a nightmare drenched in blood and screams.

Her heart pounded so violently it felt like it would burst, and she couldn’t stop shaking.

The corpses of her friends lay twisted and broken, their faces still frozen in pain and fear, and An Ran knew, no matter how far she ran, no matter how long she lived—this moment would haunt her forever.
