Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Finally Awake
Liora bit her lip, doubt creeping into her heart. Had she done something wrong? Was it her fault?
She clenched her hands. She was filled with frustration.
She wasn’t an expert in energy absorption. She had only known about it in fragments. Was the crystal too high-grade for him? Should she have taken precautions beforehand?
Her fingers trembled as she pressed against his wrist again, this time asking the system.
"System, what’s happening to Chen Wei?"
A soft chime echoed in her mind before the system’s voice responded.
"The host need not worry. Chen Wei’s body is currently undergoing an adjustment period. Because he has never properly practiced absorbing crystals before, his body is rejecting the foreign energy, and the energy itself is resisting being assimilated. This struggle will last for a few days before they naturally merge."
Liora’s hands curled into fists. "So he’s not in danger?"
"No," the system reassured her. "The energy inside him entered willingly. It will not harm him. However, under normal circumstances, absorbing a high-grade crystal without prior training could lead to severe backlash, even crippling a person permanently."
"Chen Wei’s luck and natural potential allowed him to endure it. Otherwise, he might have suffered a fate worse than death."
Liora sucked in a breath. She hadn’t realized just how dangerous this process was.
"So to increase one’s level, it is better to use aether fruit rather than high-grade crystals because aether fruits are pure sources of energy," the system explained.
"Unlike crystal cores, they do not contain impurities or remnants of the creatures they came from. A high-grade crystal still carries traces of the zombie’s energy, which can cause rejection in the absorber’s body. That’s why people prefer aether fruits—they are far safer and more efficient, albeit much rarer."
Liora let out a slow exhale, absorbing the new information.
She had made a big, reckless decision. If Chen Wei hadn’t been naturally compatible with the energy, he might have been permanently injured. The thought made her stomach twist with dread.
She refocused on him and gently wiped his sweat-soaked forehead. His breathing remained calm despite the fever.
"How long until he wakes up?" she asked.
"If nothing serious happens, he will wake up by tomorrow morning."
Liora nodded. At least that’s good. They don’t need to wait much longer.
She turned to the others, who were watching anxiously. "He’ll be fine," she assured them. "His body just needs time to adapt."
Liang Zihan released a breath of relief, but Zhou Yinuo still looked worried.
"What if something goes wrong?" she asked.
Liora looked down at Chen Wei’s sleeping face. She didn’t have an answer, so she simply continued to wipe his forehead.
"Then we wait," she said.
And so they did.
The night passed in restless silence. None of them dared to sleep, keeping watch over Chen Wei as he lay motionless on the bed.
His fever remained, his body drenched in cold sweat. But despite the unnatural heat, his expression never twisted in pain.
By dawn, as the first light of morning crept through the cracks of the wooden walls...
Chen Wei stirred from his unconsciousness.
His fingers twitched first, then his eyelids slowly fluttered.
A slow, deep breath filled his lungs before he finally opened his eyes.
For a moment, everything was blurry. His mind was still clouded with remnants of sleep, his body heavy as if it had been submerged in water.
Then, as the haze cleared, he realized something.
He felt good. Stronger and lighter. Like he had shed an invisible weight that had been suffocating him for years.
He flexed his fingers, trying to regain control over his stiff body.
"Chen Wei!"
A familiar voice pulled him from his thoughts. He turned his head slightly and saw Liora staring at him, relief washing over her features.
"You’re awake," she said, as if trying to confirm it to herself.
A small smile tugged at Chen Wei’s lips.
"Yeah," he murmured. "I’m awake."
"Fuck you, Chen Wei! You slept like some goddamn Disney princess. Do you need a kiss from a prince to wake up?" Liang Zihan snapped sarcastically, unable to hold back his frustration.
While everyone was panicking over him, he just lay there peacefully like some fairy-tale beauty and even woke up with that creepy smile.
Zhou Yinuo let out a stifled laugh at Liang Zihan’s remark. "You should have seen yourself last night," she added. "You looked like you were about to cry."
Liang Zihan scowled. "Bullshit! I was just—just... stressed!" He huffed, crossed his arms, and turned away. "Who told him to suddenly become unconscious without a warning? If he had died, I would have haunted his ass in the afterlife!"
Chen Wei chuckled, his voice still hoarse from sleep. "That’s a bit extreme, don’t you think?"
"Extreme? You nearly gave us all heart attacks!" Liang Zihan snapped. "Do you know how terrifying it was to see you burning up like that? You were smiling in your sleep like some enlightened monk while we were losing our damn minds!"
Chen Wei winced slightly, guilt flickering across his face. "Sorry..."
"You damn well better be," Liang Zihan grumbled. "Next time, warn us before you decide to put yourself through hell."
"Do you think it’s possible to say, ’Hey! Watch me, I am going to be unconscious’?" Chen Wei added with an eye roll.
Liora sighed at the boiling Liang Zihan while rubbing her temples. "At least he’s fine now." But then her gaze softened as she looked at Chen Wei. "Really, though... How do you feel?"
Chen Wei took a moment to process the changes in his body. The power surging within him was stable now. His movements felt lighter, more refined. He had never felt this strong before.
"I feel... incredible," he admitted, flexing his fingers. "Like I’ve broken through something I didn’t even know was holding me back."
Liang Zihan rolled his eyes. "Great. Now you’re gonna be insufferable with all that new power."
Zhou Yinuo chuckled. "Let him have his moment. He did just survive something that could’ve killed him."
Chen Wei turned to Liora, his expression sincere. "Thank you," he said. "I know it was risky, but... I don’t regret it."
Liora studied him for a long moment before exhaling. "You got lucky," she said. "Next time, we’re doing things properly. No more recklessness."
Chen Wei grinned. "Got it."
