Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Finally Found it [Bonus Chapter]

She wasn’t. And even if she was, she found herself wanting to listen.

He began telling her about a time before everything collapsed—about the rush of city life, where people argued over traffic instead of survival. About the thrill of repairing a broken machine and watching it work again. About how people once dreamed of things greater than just making it to the next day.

He spoke of the first time he saw a plane land, of how people used to gather around screens to watch stories unfold, and of how laughter had once filled the streets at night.

Liora listened, absorbing the words of a world that was no longer there and one she had never witnessed.

Liora did not even realize when so much time had passed. She was lost in his stories of the world before the apocalypse.

Suddenly, an idea struck her mind. What if this old man also had what she needed? Without wasting another second, she asked him. It would be good if his answer was yes. It would save her a lot of trouble.

"Um... do you have a generator?"

The old man’s expression turned strange, like he could not place why a young girl would need a generator. Only those in higher positions and the filthy rich could afford one. It had become one of the hottest commodities everywhere.

After the entire power plant was destroyed last year and electricity was cut off permanently, most people relied on generators. But soon, people stopped using them when survival became more important than luxury.

Only big bases and powerful families that could afford them still used generators. They had also become very costly because influential families kept buying generators for the future. There was no chance of manufacturing new ones. The limited ones in the world were all that remained, and most of them already had owners.

"Now, that’s not something people ask for every day," he mused while tapping a finger against the counter. "Why do you need one?"

Liora hesitated. She had been careful not to reveal too much about herself. But she also knew she had to gain the trust of this old man, and he did not look like he was short on money.

If Liora’s guess was right, the old man was simply enjoying his retirement. He did not look like someone who was struggling in an apocalyptic world.

"I have my reasons," she said simply.

The old man studied her for a long moment, then exhaled.

"I do have one," he admitted. "But you have to offer something of equal worth." His gaze flicked over her, as if in deep thought about why she needed one. "Could a young girl like you afford it?"

Liora met his eyes with her own determined gaze.

"That depends," she said. "Are you willing to negotiate?"

The old man chuckled. "Smart girl."

"Why don’t you come to my home? I will show you the generator."

Liora raised an eyebrow. Not many people were willing to invite others into their homes—and definitely not the people they encountered in the black market. Because everyone present here was not ordinary.

"Old man! Don’t you trust me too much? What if I’m a bad person?" Liora said with a teasing expression. She could not believe the old man was so naive as to actually invite her into his house. There must definitely be a motive.

And he did not look like someone who could be easily fooled. Then why?

"Haha! Young girl, you are really good at jokes. How can a sweet, energetic girl like you be a bad person? I have seen far too many people to recognize them at a glance," the old man said with a chuckle, amused by Liora’s bold choice of words.

"It would be fun to know more about this girl. The girl was definitely special—he could see it."

"Then deal. Let’s go. I want a generator. Can it be today? Maybe I won’t be able to come tomorrow."

"Sure, let’s go. My home is not that far."

Soon, the old man and Liora were sitting in an old vintage car. She knew what cars were used for, and she had seen many cars and vehicles in the past few days, but none like this one.

She clicked her tongue at the old man’s lavishness after discovering just how fucking expensive this car was in the pre-apocalypse world.

It was a limited-edition car. She found all this information through her system and could not help but think to herself—the old man really knew how to live.

The old man’s house was just as she expected—well-maintained, secure, and filled with remnants of a world that no longer existed. The walls were lined with old bookshelves, framed pictures, and neatly arranged furniture. Unlike the rough and grimy shelters she had seen in the base, this place carried a sense of peace, as if the world were still as it had been before. But reality was far from it.

Liora had half-expected to be led into a messy storage room. Instead, the old man took her through a side corridor to a locked metal door. He punched in a code on a digital keypad, and with a beep, the heavy door slid open, revealing a dimly lit room.

Inside, in one far corner, there was a working generator.

Liora’s eyes lit up at the sight of it. It wasn’t just any generator—this was high-quality, well-preserved, and from what she could tell, it is fully operational. It was a treasure in this world, where electricity had become a luxury only the rich and powerful could afford.

She took a step forward, extending her hand to inspect it—

... only for the old man to suddenly grab her by the collar and yank her back.

Before she could react, she was dragged out of the room, the heavy metal door shutting behind them with a loud clank.
