Chapter 38: Chapter 38: In for a big Trouble

Zhou Yinuo wasn’t sure if she believed that.

She knew people like Liora. People who laughed off pain, who buried fear beneath their arrogance, who acted as if nothing in the world could touch them.

And she knew that deep down, those were often the people who carried the heaviest burdens.

But if Liora wanted to pretend she wasn’t shaken, then Zhou Yinuo would let her be.

For now.

Zhou Yinuo smirked. "Well, since you’re alive and all, I guess that means you owe me food. I did almost die, you know."

Liora scoffed. "Are you serious? I saved you, and you want me to feed you? Shouldn’t it be you who feeds me?"

"I have very simple needs," Zhou Yinuo said while shrugging. "Survival, warmth, and a full stomach."

"That was my line. You stole it," Liora said with a heartbroken expression.

Zhou Yinuo giggled like a teenage girl, pleased that her plan had worked. She had deliberately said that line to distract Liora from her worries, and her reaction did not disappoint.

More than anything, she hoped Liora could let go of whatever was weighing her down and live without burdens. She didn’t want someone as bright and beautiful as Liora to follow the same painful path she had walked.

As they were bickering, they heard the deep rumbling of an approaching vehicle. The sound grew louder with each passing second, kicking up dust as a large military truck came into view.

Liora and Zhou Yinuo turned toward it, their bodies tensed as they thought another group was approaching.

Liora cursed her damn luck. It was really a bad day to encounter troublemakers one after another. Zhou Yinuo was no better. She also turned very alert at the sight of the approaching vehicle.

The truck screeched to a stop a few meters away, its tires grinding against the road. The doors swung open, and four figures jumped down—Chen Wei, Liang Zihan, and two unfamiliar men in military uniforms.

Even without an introduction, it was obvious these men weren’t just ordinary survivors. The way they carried themselves, the sharpness in their eyes, the sheer weight of their presence—it was enough to make anyone tense up.

Liora and Zhou Yinuo relaxed visibly as they looked at the familiar faces.

Chen Wei spotted Liora and Zhou Yinuo first. His eyes widened in relief, but then his brows furrowed. "What are you doing standing in front? I told you to hide inside. What if some bad guy decided to attack you behind our backs?"

"We were lying peacefully inside, but you know, trouble came knocking at our door," Liora said with an eye roll. "So your advice was actually pretty useless."

"What the hell happened?" Chen Wei demanded as he hurried over. His eyes scanned Liora, searching for signs of serious injury. "Did someone come while we were not here?"

Liang Zihan looked just as baffled. "What happened? Who came here? Was it to snatch the supplies?"

Before Liora could answer, one of the men beat her to it and decided to speak himself.

"I am Commander Xu," he announced, his voice sharp and authoritative. He didn’t even spare another glance at Liora or Zhou Yinuo.

His expression remained cold, unreadable, as if their existence was nothing more than a minor inconvenience. He gestured toward the man beside him. "This is Captain Han."

There was no concern in his tone, no question of whether they were injured or if they had encountered danger. Instead, his next words made Liora’s mood sour.

"We received reports of supplies in this location," Commander Xu continued, his gaze sweeping the area. "Where are they?"

Liora’s mood instantly darkened. Her fists clenched at her sides, nails digging into her palms.

So that was it? No acknowledgment of the battle she had just fought? No questions about whether they had been attacked, if they had been hurt, or if they had barely survived?

She had not expected much from them, but they should have asked at least out of courtesy. But nothing.

Just supplies.

Thinking about her decision, she was right.

The base people were really shitty, no doubt.

She had met people like him before. The type who saw everything in terms of value—food, weapons, resources. And if a person wasn’t useful, they weren’t worth caring about.

Zhou Yinuo stiffened beside her, but not for the same reason as Liora. She was nervous after encountering such a high-ranking officer for the first time and was afraid to even breathe loudly.

Liora really could not understand their behavior. Just why were they so afraid of members of the base, as if they had the authority to decide their lives? But alas, she could not voice out her thoughts, not when she barely knew how the hierarchy worked here.

So she swallowed down the bitter taste of anger. There was no point in arguing with people like him. She forced a neutral expression onto her face, masking the storm brewing inside her.

"Follow me," she said coolly.

Commander Xu gave a sharp nod, showing no sign of gratitude, and motioned for Captain Han to follow. The two men fell in step behind her without hesitation, their footsteps steady and unhurried, as if they owned the place.

Chen Wei and Liang Zihan hesitated before following as well, their eyes darting toward Liora, silently asking what had happened. But they didn’t dare voice their questions, not with the two high-ranking officers present.

Liora could tell they were holding back. If it had just been the three of them, Liang Zihan would have already been hounding her for answers, asking if she had been hurt, if she had fought, if she was alright. Chen Wei would have been the same, just in a quieter way.

But right now, they remained silent, their backs unnaturally straight as they walked behind the officers. Because these weren’t just any military men—these were the top figures in their base. And questioning too much in their presence could mean trouble.

Liora didn’t blame them for their caution. It seemed like they were trained to bow before them.

But sorry, she couldn’t do that for these shitty people, who think very little of others. And arrogance and royalty were also carved into her bones. It did not allow her to just bow to anyone.

As she led them inside, she made a quiet promise to herself—if Commander Xu thought she was just some nameless survivor he could walk all over, he was in for a big trouble.
