Chapter 176: Returning with Supplies
Chapter 176: Chapter 176: Returning with Supplies
The setting sun slowly sinks to the west, and the afterglow is like fire, sprinkling on the golden wheat field that is almost harvested. The wheat stubble is low in the wind, like a quiet farewell.
Everyone has been working all afternoon.
Their clothes are already soaked, their palms are red and swollen, and their backs are sore, but no one complains. Because those piles of wheat bundles were harvested by their own hands, and they are real food.
In these end times, there is nothing more reassuring than this.
Lin Ci sat down on the grass, leaned against a crooked tree, and exhaled: "My waist is about to break... Next time I see a wheat field, remember to let me do less work."
Several people laughed when they heard it.
Old Zhou wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve and said with emotion: "Okay, this trip is worth it. With these wheat, we can last for several months after returning to the base. Steamed buns, porridge, finally I can have a decent meal."
Just as they were discussing how to transport these harvests back, a practical problem emerged.
"These... can’t be taken away," someone whispered.
They didn’t have a cart, didn’t have enough bags, and didn’t have that much physical strength. They couldn’t bring back so much food in one trip.
The atmosphere sank slightly.
At this moment, Liora came over, calmly looked at the pile of wheat bundles, and then raised her hand and waved.
With a "swish," all the wheat and bags disappeared into the air.
Everyone was stunned.
"I have spatial abilities," she said lightly, "I can take these away, don’t worry."
After the silence, there was a huge cheer.
"Sister Liora is so strong!"
"We really didn’t work in vain!"
Xu Kai watched from the side, his expression was rarely soft, just nodded lightly, without saying much.
Liora smiled softly and turned around and said: "Get ready to go. We must get out of this forest before dark. It’s not safe at night."
Everyone’s expression immediately tightened, and they packed up their equipment.
The sun was approaching the horizon, and the shadows of the forest were long.
When they went back into the forest, the last ray of sunlight was also swallowed by the shadows of the trees, and darkness quickly enveloped the surroundings.
Night fell quickly, bringing cold wind and humidity.
As they continued to move forward, some strange noises began to come from the forest.
The dead branches rang, the sound of the wind seemed to be lingering in their ears, and some tree shadows began to look less natural.
"Don’t disperse," Xu Kai reminded in a low voice.
Soon, the mutant creature quietly appeared—a black-haired hare, much larger than usual, with a faint glow in its eyes, suddenly jumped out of the bushes.
Xu Kai moved very quickly, took a step forward, and subdued it with one blow.
The forest was becoming more and more restless, with constant movement.
A mutant snake with a metallic sheen slid down from the branches above. Liora slashed it, and an arrow condensed from black shadow flew out from her, pinning the snake to the tree. No one noticed that it was shadow and not just a real arrow.
Then, there were attacks from wild beasts in pairs—a wild boar with curved teeth and a mutant deer with twisted horns.
Everyone dispersed to fight, some were knocked down, and were quickly pulled back by their teammates. Liora’s shadow shuttled between the crowd and saved several people.
Old man Zhou threw out a bottle of special smoke, blocking the view, and Xu Kai took the opportunity to deal with the deer.
Every move was fast, simple, and steady.
Liora continued to collect edible animal bodies while fighting, "Don’t waste anything that can be eaten or used."
Although it was dangerous to travel at night, they were no longer survivors fleeing in panic.
They were cooperating and protecting each other, and they were like a real team.
Liora’s black shadow flashed across and blocked a bug-shaped monster that sprang out from the ground at Liora.
The people fought more and more steadily, and although their breathing was heavy, their steps did not stop.
Finally, behind a sparse shadow of trees, Liora said, "The exit is not far ahead."
When they heard that sentence, it was like hearing some kind of salvation.
They continued to move forward until a very faint moonlight appeared above their heads. But still, it was very faint like it was shadowed by some kind of fog. So most of the part of the forest is pitch dark.
They walked out of the forest.
Although they were exhausted and their weapons were stained with blood, their eyes were more determined than ever.
Because this time, they brought back so many supplies.
Just as the trees finally began to thin and the night sky revealed itself in torn patches above their heads, the edge of the forest came into view. There, faint torchlight flickered like fireflies in the wind, scattered but steady.
Liora stepped out first. The bloodstains on her sleeves had already dried, and there were several scratches on her cheek. The moment her foot touched the grassy clearing beyond the tree line, a voice cried out.
"Liora!"
It was Zhou Yinuo. She rushed forward, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and anger. "We were about to go in and look for you! If you were even a minute later—!"
Behind her stood Liang Zihan, holding a flashlight in one hand and a long wooden staff in the other. His jaw clenched. "We thought something happened. No one came out after sunset. You know how dangerous this place gets."
Chen Wei exhaled a deep breath, pushing his glasses up his nose. "We split into three teams and were preparing to enter. Just five more minutes and we’d all be inside that forest."
Zhao Ren nodded beside him, his shirt already half unbuttoned, showing he had geared up for a fight. "Don’t do that again. Seriously. My heart was about to explode."
Ji Ming let out a short laugh, half in tension, half in disbelief. "I was already saying goodbye to my bed and blanket."
Mei looked like she had been crying. Her voice trembled a little as she stepped forward. "I thought... I thought something had gone wrong."
Shen Haoran put a comforting hand on her shoulder, his usually carefree face drawn with concern. "You’re safe. That’s all that matters now."
Yun Shou, tall and calm, simply nodded at Liora. "We were ready."
Yan Lin, who always acted cold, was the one to silently shove a canteen into Liora’s hand. "Drink something."
Liora paused and looked at all of them—each person tense, dirty, worried, yet still here.
"You... waited for us?" she asked, her voice quieter than usual.
Zhou Yinuo huffed. "Of course we did. Do you think we’d let your team disappear into that forest without doing anything?"
"We were ready to split into search groups," Liang Zihan added. "Even if it meant facing whatever’s crawling in there."
Liora opened her mouth, but no words came out for a moment. Then she smiled. It was small, tired, and sincere.
"...Thank you."
