Chapter 100: A child’s feeling

Chapter 100: Chapter 100: A child’s feeling

The silence lingered even as more footsteps approached from behind. Dust still floated in the air, catching the dim light of the early morning sky.

Everyone had found themselves and others filled with injuries and a gloomy atmosphere. No one wished to speak, as they were too injured and tired from this fight, and it felt like even talking would waste their energy. So they tried to conserve their energy as much as possible.

But there was something different about this scene.

Liora sat quietly against the broken wall, her arms wrapped protectively around a small child. His sobs were muffled against her neck. He was clinging to her like a lifeline, and she didn’t move an inch.

Mei finally stepped forward, her legs trembling from exhaustion but her eyes focused with worry.

"Liora..." she said softly, kneeling beside her, "You’re badly injured. Let me check you."

Liora didn’t speak for a moment. She gently shifted the child in her arms, trying to keep him comfortable.

Zhou Yinuo approached next with a shocked expression. Her eyes were stuck on the little figure clinging to Liora’s neck. Guilt hit her like a wave as realisation came crashing back.

The child whom she had completely forgotten about.

She was too busy and too scared to remember that small figure who had been with her and was her responsibility to save. Liora had given her the task to take care of him and keep him safe, but she had just gotten up and left to check on others, completely forgetting about him.

It was good that no harm was done to him when he was alone and didn’t encounter any mutated insects or zombies. Or she really did not know how to face Liora.

Maybe she had placed others’ well-being above this child, and there was a small part whispering in her mind that maybe he would never wake up. Her mind slowly filled with partiality, and that made her overlook his existence.

But now... he was here. Completely awake and clinging to Liora while crying.

Zhou Yinuo’s voice wavered as she crouched beside Liora, trying not to startle the boy. "Liora... let me hold him. Just for a moment. You need to get checked. You were... you are covered in so much blood..."

Liora also wanted to keep him aside as she was almost reeking with blood and grime. It must be uncomfortable for the child to hold her like this. Maybe it was the reason he was so scared.

But when she tried to remove his hands from her gently, the child cried harder at her intentions and clung even more tightly to her.

The moment Zhou Yinuo reached out to him, he twisted his body away from her arms, burying his face deeper into Liora’s shoulder. His cries became louder, full of fear and panic.

"Shhh, it’s okay..." Liora whispered gently, her voice tired but steady. "Nothing happened. Don’t cry... I’m not going anywhere."

She looked up at Mei and Zhou Yinuo with a helpless smile, the kind of smile people give when they know they’re trapped—but they don’t mind.

"Let’s just... let him stay like this. He won’t disturb you. Just check if I’ve got any deep injuries," she said softly. "After all, I already took a healing potion. I’ll be fine."

Mei blinked. Her hands froze mid-air as she listened to Liora’s words. "A potion?" she asked with surprise. Those were very rare, and only a few Awakeners could make potions, which boosted their price, and they became very costly. Not something survivors could easily afford, especially ones at their level.

But she quickly masked her reaction and moved her glowing hands closer to Liora’s side. "Okay. I’ll just check for anything serious."

As she worked, the others gathered near them but kept a quiet distance. Their eyes drifted to the child.

No one spoke, but their expressions said enough.

They had all seen the kid before and also realized that there was a problem with him. At first, none of them thought much, as they believed the child was only sleeping. But even after the rain, he didn’t wake up, and their doubt grew. Looking at Liora’s worried face every time she checked on him...

They realized that maybe the child was injured or had been in some kind of scene that led to this. It could be anything, but not good, and they thought it would hurt her if they brought him up. So none of them asked her any questions.

Or maybe talking about him would lead to her past she didn’t want to talk about. Or maybe... they had just been too focused on surviving. So many assumptions from their sides. Everyone thought different things, but all came to the same conclusion: they did not want to hurt her.

After all, they had seen countless scenes just like this. And were they not also a part of this just a few months ago, when they were greiving and pleading to the heavens to let their friends and family live? But what happened at last? Nothing... no one survived.

Just like that, they also thought he wouldn’t wake up again. That he was slipping away quietly, just like their family and friends silently passed away.

But now, seeing him cry and cling and breathe—truly breathe—was like a miracle.

He looked nothing like a child who had been unconscious for nearly a week. His cheeks were flushed, his arms strong enough to hold tight, and his voice full of emotion.

He wasn’t weak. He was more scared.

Terrified, maybe, because when he opened his eyes, no one had been beside him. No familiar face. No soft words. Just the broken battlefield and blood everywhere. Which would be a terrifying scene for a child.

And so, he ran... ran to find a familiar face among the chaos and blood, through the dust and rubble until he found her.

Liora.

The one person he remembered. The one he trusted and now, he refused to let go. They could understand his feelings.
