Chapter 212: Chapter 212: The End of the Road
When the soldiers heard that Captain Qi had a solution, they were overjoyed. After all, they had to finish testing the usability of the boat before modifying the others being built.
If the car engine worked, they could get more and make every boat an engine-driven one.
It wouldn’t be completely reliant on the engine as their oars will still be used, but it will make moving forward easier and faster. Getting swept away by the small waves appearing in the water won’t be easy.
Also, they were soldiers, not stupid people, they understood that their discharge might cause some people unrest and action against them might be taken while in the water.
They didn’t want to be in completely passive positions.
Qi Long called a small group leader from the other battalions and one of his man from his squad and had them go to retrieve two gallons of gasoline from the vehicle they had hidden before.
He had not wanted to expose it as it might be used against them as stealing military property and cause a stain in their military record before discharge. Even though such a record might not tter much in the future, it was still better to leave with a clean record.
Even though there was a risk of exposure at this time, as long as their discharge was processed before anyone found out, it would have no effect on them.
He wasn’t worried so much about himself, but his brothers were a different case.
The two soldiers entrusted with retrieving the gasoline left as usual as if going in search of materials to construct boats and came back an hour later with the two gallons of gasoline.
When asked, they claimed to have salvaged it from the trunk of a car a little further from their normal search area.
Nobody really wanted to follow up on where the gasoline came from as long as they had some to help them.
After a few tests and adjustments, the boat finally worked. It couldn’t locomote the boat on its own but it could aid in moving it faster as long as the oars were rowed at the same time.
It was kind of primitive, but they didn’t expect the leaders to offer them a means of transportation once they left.
After a few days, the boats were ready and their discharge had been granted.
The day Qi Long had agreed to meet with Ye Xuan, the group of over a hundred soldiers left the flooded base as early as 6:00 in the morning.
They weren’t covering as long a distance as Ye Xuan and Chu Miao but their transportation tools weren’t exactly advanced.
So, it took them longer to travel the distance that was less than half of what Ye Xuan and Chu Miao covered in their yacht.
The soldiers had encountered some mutated fish in the flood water while searching for materials the last few days, but were able to fight them.
The fish were not as large as the ones Chu Miao and her team had come across during their supply run mission.
However, as they rowed further away from the base, they felt unease creep in them and as soldiers, this was the first sign of danger. They immediately entered alert mode and everyone grabbed the self-made weapons they had on them.
They had submitted their guns after discharge, so they didn’t have their regular heat weapons. Some had daggers, others had made spikes from tree branches, and others with superpowers prepared to attack.
In the last couple of days, Qi Long’s squad of five had spend a lot of time teaching other superpower users in the base how to use and control their abilities.
Since they had experience after fighting zombies all the way back to their base. Also, from watching Ye Xuan fight, they had learned a thing or two. Now, they didn’t even mind that some of the soldiers they were teaching weren’t leaving with them.
They thought it was a good thing to teach them how to use their abilities so that they could reduce the number of soldiers dying on zombie-hunting missions from now on.
They were brothers after all, even if not from the same squad or batallion.
Soon, they saw the cause of their unease. Soldiers on motor boats were chasing after them with guns blazing.
What many had been worried about was still happening. While some of the soldiers on the motor boats were the ones with a single-minded mentality believing that orders given by their superiors must be executed without question, even if they involved killing fellow soldiers, others wanted to prove that they were better than Qi Long and others who had held some higher positions before.
In short, they were either driven by duty or greed. Both were lethal and made sure that there was no room for negotiation.
The leaders had indeed thought everything through. They wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t get a chance to survive no matter what happened.
Qi Long had faith in Ye Xuan, but he didn’t know whether he was in his range and could call for help. He didn’t want his brothers to perish here because of his promise for a better future.
"Everyone, move faster towards the spot I told you before. Aim straight for the tallest building in the town and hide inside. You are trained soldiers, once there you will have the terrain advantage and can hold them off until help arrive." Qi Long instructed as he stopped his boat, which happened to be carrying his five brothers.
"What do you mean Captain Long? Are you thinking of staying behind?" One soldier asked.
"Someone has to hold them off. With our superpowers, we can hold them off for a few minutes even if they use machine guns. That should buy you enough time to get away." Qi Long replied with a sigh in his heart.
Looks like he won’t get to serve under Major General Ye after all.
"No, we will fight together." Another soldier objected immediately.
The others followed suit and stopped all their boats. They started to move them and align them in a straight line with Qi Long’s boat.
Qi Long felt a headache coming seeing this scene. He was glad that he had not misjudged these people and all of them were willing to fight together and die together, but he didn’t bring them out to die. So, he couldn’t let them stay.
"This is an order. Go now those people will be here in a couple of minutes. Use this time to get as far as you can and follow what I just said." Qi Long put on a serious expression and instructed.
As soldiers, they were used to following orders. Going against a superior was the same as asking for a death sentence. Even though they weren’t afraid of dying, it was their instinct to obey when Qi Long mentioned a military order.
The soldiers slowly turned their boats and the fixed engines roared to their limit while their oars moved faster than ever.
Within half a minute, they had pulled a good distance away from Qi Long’s boat.
Qi Long seeing them get away breathed a sigh of relief and turned to look at his brothers.
"I am sorry it has to end this way." He was regretful that he couldn’t take them any further.
"Don’t worry captain. At least we will be joining our brothers soon." The youngest soldier in the group said with a relieved smile.
"Yes, we miss them. There’s nothing wrong with going to see them earlier." Another chimed in and the others followed with head nods and they all laughed.
It didn’t seem like they were facing death at all. They faced the threat of taking their lives with dignity and the lion heart of a soldier.
The soldiers sent after them stood on the motor boats a short distance away from them and looked at them with puzzlement.
’These people were about to die, why were they so happy about it?’ They wondered in their hearts.
They started to be cautious thinking that there might be a trap somewhere. After all, who doesn’t show fear when facing death and instead laugh so happily?
This short delay of action actually gave the fleeing soldiers more time to put a greater distance between them and the enemy.
