Chapter 395: Chapter 394 Who Feels Heartache for Whom 5 Chapter 395: Chapter 394 Who Feels Heartache for Whom 5 That evening, Su Shu prepared dinner at home and took a bag of salt and a small packet of tea to the exchange point, where she traded them for eight eggs.

She steamed two servings of egg custard, one large and one small. Tang Zelin came over, “Is the small one for Qinghuan?”

As Su Shu bustled about, she responded, “Yeah, the big one is for Wang Rui and the other two.”

Tang Zelin glanced nearby, “Any left over?”

“What?”

“Eggs.”

“Two left.”

Qinghuan’s took two, and the large one took four. It seemed she still favored Qinghuan a bit more, and Su Shu couldn’t help but laugh at herself.

Upon hearing there were two left, Tang Zelin was pleased, “That’s enough, let’s steam one for Xiao’ai too!”

After saying this, he turned to go tell Xiao’ai a story.

Su Shu shook her head with a smile. Due to a series of events that evening, they hadn’t had dinner, but she cooked quickly. Soon, all three portions were ready. She set them on the table for Tang Zelin and Xiao’ai to eat first, while she delivered the meal to Bai Qinghuan and the others.

Tang Zelin stopped her, “You eat something first. Give me the food, I’ll go deliver it.”

“You’ll scare her,” she said, referring to Bai Qinghuan.

Tang Zelin replied, “Can’t be helped. By now, she should be getting used to it. Don’t think she’s weak because she’s young; that girl has a tough streak, or else she wouldn’t have lasted until now. You stay home and watch Xiao’ai. Give me the stuff, and while you’re at it, bring a bottle of liquor. Yao Ke wants a drink.”

As he spoke, he had already picked up his coat to put it on.

Su Shu thought about it and agreed, considering Little Xiao’ai was still ill, she didn’t feel at ease leaving her at home alone.

With children, illnesses come on quickly and fiercely. She fetched a portion of cigarettes and two bottles of liquor for Tang Zelin to take.

“Is one pack of cigarettes and two bottles of liquor too little?”

“Not too little at all!”

Tang Zelin had the look of someone who treasured these items greatly, as if giving Yao Ke even a little was generous of him!

After Tang Zelin left, Su Shu heated some water and wiped Xiao’ai’s body, contemplating giving her a bath but worrying it might worsen her condition. A wipe-down would suffice.

Xiao’ai lay in bed, holding up a storybook, one of the many they had “grabbed” from Linjiang.

Su Shu sat beside her, “Xiao’ai, do you want to eat something?”

Xiao’ai seemed to lack appetite, looking listless.

Su Shu brought over a small bowl of egg custard and sprinkled some pork floss on top, “Then let’s just eat some egg custard.”

Xiao’ai hesitated for a few seconds before climbing out of the covers.

Su Shu’s lips curled slightly; the little girl really had a thing for pork floss and couldn’t resist it.

Xiao’ai could eat on her own, but today, Su Shu didn’t know if it was because her sudden disappearance scared her or if she simply wanted to care for her, she fed the little girl bit by bit.

However, while feeding the little girl, Su Shu suddenly remembered the often serious-faced Ji Dong, the company commander.

It seemed that ever since Xiao’ai met Ji Dong, she had taken a special liking to him. She often evaded others’ touch, but with Ji Dong, the little girl always seemed to lean in willingly. Not to mention, there was a certain connection between the two of them–if not for Ji Dong, they wouldn’t have found her when she disappeared, nor would he have taken her to receive medical care.

Curious, Su Shu looked at Xiao’ai and decided to ask, “Xiao’ai, you seem to really like Uncle Ji Dong, don’t you?”

Xiao’ai swallowed a mouthful of egg custard and at the question, lifted her shining big eyes, blinking rapidly.

“Do you think Uncle Ji Dong is nice?”

After thinking for a moment, Xiao’ai gave a thumbs up.

Su Shu understood that meant he was very nice.

“Auntie thinks Uncle Ji Dong is quite a good man too. But next time you go out, you have to tell me, okay? This time Uncle Ji Dong found you, but next time we might not be so lucky, right?”

Xiao’ai nodded.

“Good girl,” Su Shu said as she ruffled her hair and muttered while mixing the pork floss into the egg custard, “I wonder why you like him so much.”

Suddenly, a soft and milky childish voice crisply replied.

“Because he’s going to die soon.”
