Chapter 275: Chapter 274: Let Go of That Girl (1) Chapter 275: Chapter 274: Let Go of That Girl (1) As the weather grew colder, life in the safety zone began to stabilize.
The danger that had always caused fear didn’t seem so terrifying anymore, but the rudimentary quality of life and the growing craving for food began to torment the people in the living area.
Homes that hadn’t been destroyed by the disaster became many people’s last bit of hope, causing a continuous stream of requests to the government to go outside. One could be stopped, two could be stopped, but when the numbers grew and the disturbances persisted day after day, it inevitably became a hidden danger.
After discussions between the leaders of the government and the military, a policy to allow passage was finally implemented.
However, the freedom of movement policy was not without its dangers, particularly due to the strict controls and inspections upon entry and exit.
The identities of those coming and going were easy enough to handle. Given the current period, the safety zones, especially the ones managed by Tang Zelin, had quotas that were incredibly precious. Everyone in the living area knew this, and few were foolish enough to cover for others with their own identities.
The problem lay in the items they carried with them as they entered and exited.
Hidden here and there, the fear was that the inspecting warriors might uncover something.
It was enough to leave the soldiers of Unit 208 nearly at a loss for words, returning to their barracks after their daily missions, washing up and complaining as they did.
Their unit had even reduced its own rations to make room for the civilians–could they really cause trouble for ordinary citizens?
“Come on, as long as you’re not carrying dangerous or contagious items in and out, who cares what you bring back from outside?” they would say.
To ensure the safety of the living area, there were daily quotas for entering and exiting the safety zone, and one needed to apply in advance to schedule a day.
As for the yarn in Su Shu’s hands, it really was something that someone had brought in from outside. She heard from Li Xiaoxia that this family had once owned a small shop specializing in these goods. After running at a loss and being unable to sell their stock, they were caught up in these apocalyptic times. As soon as the weather turned cold, they had the idea to bring it in from the outside, and sure enough, there were quite a few people willing to exchange goods for it.
Li Xiaoxia had plenty herself, having taken up crafting after her leg was damaged. Later, Luo Gang had exchanged some items for more yarn, as there were two young boys and a man at home.
Honestly, given the capricious nature of the weather, one never knew what kind of winter lay ahead.
With a better-safe-than-sorry attitude, the yarn sold well. Su Shu initially didn’t want to buy any since her space was filled with warm clothing. What did she have to worry about?
She’s a post-apocalyptic rich girl, isn’t she?
Unfortunately… even an apocalypse-rich girl didn’t have yarn.
She never considered this aspect before. Before the apocalypse, what era was it? People seldom wore handmade sweaters anymore, right?
She certainly didn’t, and naturally, she hadn’t thought to prepare for this. When Li Xiaoxia suggested she buy some, she thought, why not? She just gave her rations to the Luo Family, and took a little back from Li Xiaoxia.
Li Xiaoxia teased her for being too lazy to pick out her colors in person.
Su Shu thought, why bother going there? It’s noisy with so many people; better to keep a low profile when you can.
Ha, knit a sweater? Not happening.
But a scarf, she could manage that–at least she knew the knit and purl stitches.
As Xiao’ai identified the characters on her cards one by one, Su Shu sat at the end of the bed, knitting stitch by stitch by candlelight.
As she knitted, Su Shu noticed that a few of Xiao’ai’s selected cards seemed a bit off.
She put down her knitting needle and tilted her head to look at the row of cards Xiao’ai had laid out.
Wh-e-re, ca-n, no-t, es-ca-pe.
The six characters sent a thump through Su Shu’s heart.
“Xiao’ai? Is this what you learned today?”
Xiao’ai tilted her little head, gazing at the sentence she had pieced together with a somewhat bewildered look. Hearing her aunt’s question, she shook her head.
In the depth of night, Su Shu suddenly felt a chill down her back, a creeping sensation.
