Chapter 64: What and Who Is The Librarian? (2)
Seeing this, Kenji was baffled to the extent that he felt lost.
He had just fought a bunch of thugs from the crimson veil, angering them some more and making him much more embedded into their "must-die" list.
All for the sake of someone he had just met today. But now that the fight was over, he wanted to check if she was okay, and now she’s gone? What the heck!
" I can’t believe she actually ran away. But then again, I can’t really blame her, as it seemed like she was very terrified," Haruka said, picking up a book on the ground and placing it back onto the shelves.
While they were fighting, although no book shelves fell, a lot of books, especially some flying books, git knocked away and scattered on the ground.
" Yeah, I guess so. You know, she might not have gone far, I mean, this is her job place right, she’ll definitely be back," Kenji said, as he too joined Haruka in picking up the books from the ground.
Argoth, standing tall and towering was totally confused at what to do. He had been summoned to fight, and now that he had fought, and the enemies have been vanquished, why hasn’t he yet been summoned back?
" Argoth!" Kenji said, gaining the attention of the shadow beast immediately," me and Haruka can’t be the only ones to work, besides, most of this is your fault, so bend down and start picking the fallen books. Put them in their right place," a small smile creeping up Kenji’s face.
With a slight nod, the towering beast of darkness opened his mouth," Argoth," it said, as it looked and bent down, picking up stacks of books off the ground all at once, while carefully placing them in their rightful section.
Seeing this, a smile crossed the face of Haruka and Kenji. It seems like Argoth had room for improvement.
At first, it wasn’t able to speak and would just obey all of Kenji’s commands without batting an eyelid.
But now, he was able to talk, although all he could say was his name "Argoth", as small of an improvement as it may be, it was still an improvement, na dthis had made him think about something, but he wasn’t yet sure if it was possible.
•••••
After about half an hour of picking books off the ground, the trip we’re finally done, and it was just then that the doors to the library opened, parting like the double doors that they were.
" Hey, sorry can someone hel-" A middle aged looking man had suddenly just walked into the library ( Archive). But as soon as he came and wanted to say something, his voice was caught by the screaming voice that yelled in his head.
" W- ha- wa-" his voice hitched and crack, as he stared off at the huge and gigantic beast inside of the Archive.
The beast made of pure darkness and death. It’s red, bloody eyes staring deep into his soul.
It was... monstrous!
" Haaaa!" The man yelled out screaming, as he turned around and ran out of the library in haste, not daring to look back, for fear of if he does, his head would be eaten off.
" Ahhhha! There’s a monster in the library! Who let the monsters out!"
°°°°
Seeing this, Kenji slapped his forehead hard. He should have remembered that others would of course still come into the library, and if any random person comes face to face with a monster like Argoth insinde somewhere they believe to be a safe haven for their brains, of course they would run out screaming like crazed dogs.
" Ah! Sorry Argoth, but I’ll have to take you back to the ether,"
" Argoth" the monstrosity replied by speaking his own name, along with an affirmative nod that made Kenji feel bad.
It felt as if he were imposing these choices on him. Like he was using him as a slave, but he decided not to say anything. Well....other than the returning spell.
" Return!" He said, and Immediately, a familiar magic circle glowed below the "feet" of the shadow monster, and so he decided to return him back to the ether.
He didn’t really need a summoning and unsummoning word for the process of calling a beat an sending it back, but he just felt like it would be cool.
And although he wasn’t the main character as he had wanted, with Yuji taking the title since day one, he still wanted to look cool.
" Alright, I think it’s time for us to go, we’ll come back another day to check up on Evelyn," Haruka exclaimed, as she was already stressed and drained of energy, wanting to return home for a nice and long lazy nap.
" Alright, let’s go," Kenji decided to also leave. Just like Haruka, he had fought with both his body and mind, and so has now been left drained of energy.
He was sure that if another wave of cultist were to come here again, he would have no strength in dealing with them, and would have to leave that to Argoth.
Although he knew the shadow monster would be fine, he would still not want to see him fight while he stood back and watched.
" Wait!"
As they were about to leave, a sudden shout from a somewhat familiar voice held them back, stopping in thier tracks, as he turned around to know who it was.
Suddenly, footsteps were heard and a person was revealed.
It was Evelyn, the one they had just beaten up a group of cultists for. She held a book in her hand, as she approached them.
" Sir, thank you so very much for helping me!" Evelyn bowed down with a grateful expression on her face.
" Oh, no problem, I was just trying to help. I couldn’t just turn a blind eyes to what they were about to do to you. That’s just not the kind of person that I am," Kenji scratched the back of his head nervously. This seemed a bit weird, but familiar at the same time.
Being bowed down to.
" Mr Kenji, for your troubles and helping me out, please, could you take this as a token of my appreciation?" Evelyn said with a genuine smile and hopeful eyes. She was the kind of person that of does not repay back the kindness shown to her by others, she would remember it like a haunting past that just wouldn’t go away.
She then outstretched the book in her hand towards Kenji.
" Evelyn, don’t worry, I didn’t do it because I needed something in return, u just did it for the sake of my humanity," Kenji said, slowly pushing the book back to her.
Heck!
* Even if you were going to give me a gift, why would I want a book that looked as old as an old man’s aging beard,*
Seeing him reject her gift, Evelyn seemed a bit puzzled," but I thought that this was what you came here for originally. To search for something about her," she then pointed at Haruka who stood quietly behind Kenji like an obedient companion.
Hearing her words, Kenji’s and Haruka’s face twisted as they realized what she meant.
" You- mean...,"
Evelyn nodded in affirmation.
Yes, this book contained everything you need to know about the culture of ancient and extinct creatures, along with how they lived, and that included the Cloud Moon Foxes!
" Can I see it?" Haruka immediately said, her hands shaking in pure excitement.
Of what Evelyn said was true, then that means this book is the answer to awakening her bloodline. This book held the information she needs to revive her tribe!
Evelyn slowly handed the book to Haruka, a small smile creeping up her face, but disappearing just as fast.
She was a manipulative type of person, with her class being the neuromancer: a class that allows the holder to warp and infiltrate into the mind of others.
That was how she was able to see Shreya inside if Kenji’s mindscape. She had wanted to warp Kenji’s mind to an extent because of the way he had intrigued her, but for some reason, she wasn’t able to do a thing, as for it seemed there was some kind of barrier pushing away her mind tricks.
Actually, even if Kenji hadn’t intervened to help her, she would have still found a way to warp the minds of her attackers and make them beg her like dogs.
But when Kenji arrived, she realized that there was no need to reveal her powers, which was actually rare, as a neuromancer was highly sought after, as many rich and powerful individuals wanted someone like Evelyn by their side, so they could crush their opponents from the inside.
But Evelyn wanted a normal life, free of the binds of the selfishness of her human race, and so came over to Rendel town to live the life of a simple Archive keeper, but it seemed trouble would always follow the ones who don’t want it.
" Umm, Evelyn," Kenji’s voice suddenly snapped her out of her thoughts, and she immediately composed herself after," can I ask you a question?"
" Sure, of course, as long as it isn’t a question about the colour of my underwear," she said in a joking manner, causing the three of them to laugh out loud.
" No, that’s not it," he said with a slight blush. But then a second later, his face became dead serious," what do you know about the crimson veil?"
