Chapter 88: Chapter 88: Surprise
"Rena, I’m off, I’ll come to see you again when I have time."
Allen Zhang put on his coat and walked out of the shelter’s main gate refreshed, waving goodbye to Rena on the second-floor balcony.
After leaving the Green Word Shelter, he took out his phone to check the map and walked towards Old Pick’s repair shop.
It took him over twenty minutes to get to the shop, where he found that most of the staff had already left. Only the manager Darren was there, and Dominic had also been waiting for a while. The two were drinking water and chatting.
Allen walked over to greet them, and Darren, seeing the key person arrive, enthusiastically invited him to the backyard to see the vehicles. As soon as they reached the backyard, Allen spotted the excursion RV.
"This is it," he introduced, "Look at it, it looks just like a new vehicle on the outside. Who would have thought it was a junk car just a few days ago? We really put a lot of effort into giving this old buddy a makeover."
"It’s obvious you guys put your heart into it."
Allen looked at the newly refurbished GMC excursion RV, its green paint shining in the courtyard.
Darren opened the hood and the sliding door to let them inspect the vehicle, "The RV is fully fueled, and the propane tank for the hot water system is also full. If used sparingly, it could last a month! The most important are the brake system and fuel system; after our maintenance, they won’t have any issues with stalling or brake failure."
He then took them inside the vehicle, pointing at a brand-new white toilet, "As per your request, we’ve replaced the toilet, and the interior has been redesigned. There’s also the cabinetry and gas stove. We’ve replaced some new ignition devices; the switch can be turned tens of thousands of times, and the flint doesn’t need to be replaced for a year."
To prove that they were of high quality, Darren began firing up the gas stove, and also took the opportunity to test the vehicle’s existing exhaust system.
"And what’s even more important is this feature! I never thought a last century’s RV could integrate sleep-assist curtains and lighting seamlessly," Darren said with a face full of admiration, starting up the vehicle and activating the one-click sleep mode.
Allen, looking at the tidy interior of the RV, felt an indescribable comfort and coziness. The vehicle was filled with the scent of air fresheners, and the curtains and some wallpapers had also been cleaned and replaced. Under the sleep mode, the warm indoor lights created a very atmospheric and pleasant feeling.
Overall, he was very satisfied.
Dominic was stunned throughout and couldn’t utter a word. Guided by Allen, he sat in the RV’s chair and experienced the comfort.
"Allen, you won’t need to sleep in a tent anymore!" Dominic turned the seat into a bed, and lying on it, he felt like he didn’t want to leave.
If required, the RV could accommodate five to six people for a comfortable sleep, and even ten if squeezed.
"Do you like it? Then this bed is yours," Allen generously offered him one of the beds. After all, apart from the master bedroom, there were two more beds which he alone couldn’t use up.
"That doesn’t seem right."
Dominic tactfully said, "What if you bring a girl back to live here? Wouldn’t I be like a third wheel, getting in the way of your private world?"
"You don’t need to worry about that, as most of the people I know, you know too. We are all from the same circle, there’s nothing to make a fuss about," Allen waved his hand, indicating there were no issues. "Some other day, take the paperwork to the vehicle office and transfer the RV under your name. It will be much more convenient for you to drive it around."
"Ok," Dominic had no objections, considering that Allen Zhang didn’t have official residency.
They then checked the overall condition of the vehicle again, and Allen paid Darren $460 for maintenance and service, giving their service a five-star rating!
"Feel free to come back to us for maintenance issues in the future. If you encounter any problems with the RV en route, you can also come back for after-sales service!"
Darren said generously. He was confident because the mechanics in his shop had solid skills and wouldn’t cheat with parts.
"We’ll have the opportunity. Goodbye, Darren!" Allen Zhang waved his hand, greeted warmly, and took the passenger seat.
Dominic got familiar with the operation system, stepped on the accelerator to start the vehicle, reversed out of the garage, and skillfully steered onto the road.
Everyone here really knows how to drive, Dominic’s on-the-road driving skills were very solid.
"Goodbye." Darren waved his hand, watching the vehicle drive away.
Passing a traffic light, while braking and waiting, Dominic also experienced the driving feel, "Although the RV’s braking system and engine were made last century, they feel much easier to drive than many school buses and trucks!"
"Of course. After all, this is the GMC Travel RV from the hiking series, which is still very popular today. It’s not only good for city areas and highways, but also for driving on less extreme rural land. The V8 engine is certainly no joke!"
Allen Zhang replied with a smile, leaning back in his seat watching the sunset, with the city’s neon lights already on, and even the towers of the Central District were visible from afar.
The RV’s audio system started playing a soothing, lyrical song.
The vehicle restarted and drove on the road, Allen Zhang closed the windows to shut out the noise of the bustling city.
The two were immersed in a delightful and short-lived atmosphere.
Several minutes later, they arrived at Fifth Street, decided not to get out, and drove the RV directly onto the open ground of Bridge Tunnel Campsite No. 19.
The RV’s lights were bright but not harsh, very soft. From afar, they could see a group of people gathered together, seemingly discussing something.
Dominic floored the accelerator, turned on the high beams, and also honked the horn of the RV.
The folks at the Bridge Tunnel Campsite gathered in a group, fully prepared for the upcoming trouble, but when they saw the RV crashing in with lights flashing and rhythmic honking, they were all somewhat stunned and baffled.
"Where did this RV come from? Are those Black people coming to kidnap someone by driving an RV?" Jason was shocked but couldn’t comprehend.
"Fxxk! They’re not planning to humiliate Jennifer in there, are they?" Fitz was in disbelief. Glancing at Jennifer’s face, he couldn’t imagine what would happen if she really fell into those people’s hands.
Lori didn’t say a word and immediately stood up, walking towards them with an aluminum baseball bat.
"Hey! Guys! Stop freaking loving to death!!"
Dominic poked his head out of the driver’s seat and timely stopped Lori’s next move. Lori was stunned for a moment before he recognized the two familiar faces.
"I thought it was people from Sixth District. Where did you get the RV from? Stole it?"
Black was somewhat skeptical about life. You guys dared to steal this thing?
We at most would venture out for some cheap goods, but you two pulled off something big without making a sound.
