Chapter 96: Chapter 89: Pleasant Cooperation! (Extra for Alliance Hierarch "Illusion Bean Paste Bun"!)
"Instead of wasting our efforts here, we might as well tell everyone about the existence of the strange phenomena. The more wisdom we share, the better our chances of survival," Wang Hao spread his hands.
"Next, I have a feeling... something terrible is going to happen. Something very terrible."
"This is my premonition. Let everyone be mentally prepared, and maybe more people will survive."
No matter what, the passengers were all on the same side.
In fact, the number of surviving passengers might even be related to the completion of the game. Wang Hao had no choice but to pay a bit more attention.
Anthony Smith’s face darkened. He knew some truths about the world, as well as the existence of superpower users.
Most superpower users have "premonitions" of some kind.
Trapped in such large-scale anomalous phenomena, he too had some terrifying premonitions—death.
The cold and brutal ultimate outcome—he might die here today!
Smith ran his fingers through his hair, cursing his superiors in his mind. He was just a lowly C-rank Investigator, originally assigned to investigate the "Disappearing Tram" case.
There had been several instances of unaccounted tram disappearances in recent months, causing widespread panic, with many tram drivers resigning.
As a result, he suddenly found himself embroiled in a large-scale supernatural event. The true nature of the "Disappearing Tram" case was way beyond his abilities.
Supernatural phenomena involving parallel worlds were probably not caused by ordinary weirdness. At the very least, it had to be an Evil God. How could he, a C-rank, possibly investigate an Evil God?
"You think this is just the appetizer? I thought this was simply a strange murder case, at worst we could jump off the tram and run... But now the tram has ended up here."
Wang Hao observed the scenery outside the window: "Don’t panic, Mr. Smith, right now we need to figure out how to survive. I only have the ability to have premonitions, I can’t fight the strange phenomena, and I didn’t bring any Strange Objects. We need to find the strange phenomena’s pattern of murder to survive, to hold out until headquarters sends support!"
Anthony Smith nodded, forced to admit that he did panic a bit earlier.
On the other hand, the middle-aged Uncle in front of him, who was unremarkable in appearance but upon closer inspection was muscular and robust as a result of regular exercise, simply standing there, had an aura of a big shot, his expression very calm. He claimed to be an Investigator of the Black-clothed Guard. Could he be some high-ranking official?
So his tone became more respectful: "Understood. I hope our cooperation... will be pleasant!"
"Pleasant cooperation."
They shook hands.
Anthony Smith turned around and spoke to all the passengers: "Ladies and gentlemen, I am now going to tell you a fact—strange phenomena exist in the world."
"Strange phenomena can be simply defined as... ’ghosts’!"
"Ghosts exist in the world!"
"Our tram is controlled by a ghost."
The mention of the word "ghost" immediately triggered panic among the people.
Many passengers tensed up, looking for weapons. It wasn’t just the East that had tales of ghosts; the West, too, was full of legends about evil spirits and ghostly gods.
Smith continued: "Of course, these things are not quite like what you imagine. Strange phenomena have no emotions or thoughts. They are akin to a segment of mechanical programming... a program, do you understand?"
"The emergence of the strange phenomena is actually closely related to humans themselves."
"It’s a manifestation of Idealism."
"Memory, illness, organs, objects, daily behavior, emotions, habits, thoughts, perceptions... anything and everything related to human behavior and things can potentially manifest as strange phenomena."
"Strange phenomena move and kill by following rules! To discern their rules and find their loopholes is the only way for ordinary people to survive."
Anthony Smith briefly explained what he could in just a few words.
There were many theories he couldn’t clarify, and he didn’t bother to do so since the whole subject had developed into a complete academic discipline, which would take lifetimes to study deeply.
Wang Hao listened in silence.
He was not unfamiliar with strange phenomena but hearing the official settings from the mouth of an official figure for the first time was quite eye-opening.
"They’re just a murderous program. As long as you find the program’s loopholes, it’s possible to avoid death."
That was about the size of it.
"Smith, tell them how to kill the weird beings?" Wang Hao asked with interest.
Smith shook his head: "Ordinary people... can only try to physically destroy them, I suppose. But you should know, they often have counterattack rules. Their counterattacks are fierce and powerful, and without strong abilities or Strange Objects, they’re almost impossible to parry."
"I see..."
[Main Quest: Survive for a long time.]
The words "long-term" alone suggested a lot.
But at three-star difficulty, it wasn’t unsolvable.
[Items carried: Fruit 999 mobile phone, 200 US dollars, Snickers energy bars 55g*6, mineral water 600ml*2]
In his briefcase, there was also some food supplies to help restore physical strength.
As Anthony Smith revealed the fact that "strange phenomena are a part of Idealist rules, which humans cannot confront directly," it instead caused even greater panic among the passengers.
An old lady with a face full of wrinkles began pounding vigorously on the tram doors, and others started knocking on the windows.
But, unfortunately, the tram was too well-built, coupled with the mysterious supernatural effects, all attempts to escape were futile.
Two girls who wanted to see cherry blossoms were trying to cozy up to Anthony Smith.
But the guy was now preoccupied with saving himself and simply didn’t have the energy to deal with them, especially since these two weren’t exactly his type.
Smith helplessly waved his hand, "Zhao, what should we do next? I knew these people wouldn’t cooperate much... Do you have any special premonitions?"
Wang Hao said, "I just feel danger. Do you have any Strange Objects to fight against the weirdness? Don’t worry, I’m just asking, I won’t snatch your things."
Smith was silent for a moment: "I have a Holy Water Talisman... it can kill weak strange phenomena, but against stronger types, it can only immobilize them for a while."
"Immobilize?"
"Yes... it’s a one-time use item."
Smith showed a palm-sized silvery piece of paper with many incomprehensible markings on it that seemed to be painted with blood, with a cross in the center.
It felt like a chill lingered around the Talisman Paper, making it quite eerie to look at.
"I also have a plain handgun, with seven bullets," he then showed his gun, "As for other weapons, I have none."
After all, he was just a C-rank Investigator and couldn’t possibly carry too many Strange Objects.
