Alpha Damien's Breeder: The first night -
Chapter 82: Apologies
Chapter 82: Apologies
Dave’s playful demeanor returned as he excitedly exclaimed upon seeing Aurora dressed beautifully. Their presence drew the attention of everyone around them, some devoid of animosity, while others exhibited disdain.
Theresa observed them with a sense of satisfaction, noting their perfect compatibility. Observing Aurora, Theresa noticed her potential as a Luna, sensing a certain radiance about her.
"Look at him, parading the woman around like a common whore," Laura muttered with a mix of disgust and contempt, her gaze fixed on Aurora. Damien appeared unfazed by disrespecting his future in-laws, which only fueled Laura’s lack of respect for him.
"Mother," Sarah interjected, feigning disapproval at her mother’s choice of words. However, her true feelings were evident, she regarded Aurora with disdain.
Aurora’s unease grew, her heart racing, causing her to unconsciously grip Damien’s wrist.
Realizing her gesture, she hurriedly apologized, "Sorry," and attempted to retract her hand, but Damien surprisingly held onto it, their fingers intertwining firmly.
Sarah’s revulsion at the sight of their linked hands prompted her to exit the scene, her mother following suit.
A triumphant smirk played on Damien’s lips as he watched them leave, satisfied with their departure. With the audience of disapproval removed, Aurora could now gaze forward without fear.
Walking towards the exit, their hands remained tightly entwined. At this moment, Aurora found an unexpected sense of security in Damien’s touch.
She noticed his polished appearance, a navy blue suit, impeccably combed hair slicked to the side, exuding a sharp elegance. Handsome as he appeared, Aurora reminded herself to be cautious, his attire didn’t mask the potential danger he posed. He might look calm now, but the devil in him could be unleashed anytime.
"Should I join you?" Dave inquired, approaching Aurora. She offered a sheepish smile, uncertain how to respond, as only Damien could provide the answer. The destination and purpose of their outing remained a mystery to her.
"Seems like you have time for outings now. Perhaps more duties are needed, huh?" Damien teased, flashing a mischievous grin that caused Dave to retreat a few steps.
"Take it easy, brother. She’s all yours," Dave calmly stated, projecting a sense of maturity.
Ignoring his brother’s comment, Damien continued to hold Aurora’s hand, displaying an unwillingness to let her go.
"He seems to have been ensnared," Dave mused, smirking as he observed them walking away.
Damien’s focus had always centered on work, yet five years ago, Dave had witnessed the impact of the breeder’s presence on him. Fortunately, she remained within the mansion.
"What are you talking about?" Theresa queried, perplexed by Dave’s strange words. Sometimes, she found it hard to fathom what Dave was thinking despite him being the playful one among her two sons.
"Mother, have you thought of a name for your grandchild?" Shifting the topic, Dave draped an arm around his mother’s shoulder and asked playfully.
"Ah, that’s a secret. I will reveal it if I get to meet your grandchild first," she teased, fully aware that Dave had no immediate plans for marriage.
At the mention of a child, Dave’s thoughts drifted to Charlotte. He wondered about her well-being after their recent confrontation. He acknowledged his own past mistakes and hoped she was coping well.
Noticing Dave’s change in mood, Theresa probed, "Is everything alright? Is there someone special?" Her excitement was evident as she regarded Dave’s personal life.
"I haven’t...." he began, interrupted by a familiar voice.
"Good evening, Theresa," Charlotte greeted warmly, her eyes hinting at traces of redness despite her bright smile. Dave guessed that she had cried after their encounter, he knew it took immense courage for her to confront him.
"Evening, dear. Your eyes look a bit red. Is everything okay?" Concern etched Theresa’s face as she moved closer to Charlotte, examining her eyes for signs of distress.
"It’s just something in my eye," Charlotte lied, maintaining her cheerful demeanor.
"Where are you headed at this hour?" Theresa inquired, noting Charlotte’s casual appearance.
"I was seeking some fresh air and decided to wander around the pack," Charlotte explained with a smile.
"But it’s too late," she muttered regretfully. Shifting her attention to Dave, she directed, "Dave, please accompany her outside. There might be troublemakers lurking around."
"No, Theresa, I will be alright," Charlotte promptly objected, but Theresa remained unconvinced, asserting, "It’s better to be cautious. Dave, make sure she’s safe."
"I..." Charlotte began to protest but was interrupted by Dave’s intervention.
"Okay, let’s go," he stated, commencing his stride, leaving her to catch up. He had no intention of letting her leave the mansion, even without his mother’s insistence.
He aimed to make her feel more at ease, allowing their relationship to return to normalcy. He couldn’t stand the thought of things being awkward between them.
Theresa playfully nudged Charlotte, nudging her forward, and she had no option but to comply. Both of them departed the mansion together.
Theresa couldn’t understand why Dave failed to see Charlotte as a woman, she possessed such humility and qualities that would make her an excellent wife. However, it was too late for him, as she was already on the path to marriage. Both her sons seemed to struggle in the path of relationships.
During their walk, Charlotte repeatedly rubbed her hands to ward off the chill in the air. Dave contemplated removing his coat to offer her warmth, yet hesitated to do so.
Unsettled by her discomfort, he finally voiced, "Anyone else would do this," and proceeded to remove his coat, draping it over her shoulders.
Charlotte was taken aback by the gesture but didn’t decline it. Gratefully, she expressed, "Thank you." Dave felt a surge of contentment as she accepted his coat, motivating him to move closer.
"I..." "I..." Their voices overlapped, the awkwardness of the situation amusing them both as they laughed.
"Ladies first," he suggested, motioning for her to lead.
"Apologies for my outburst earlier, my emotions got the best of me. I didn’t mean everything I said," Charlotte paused mid-stride, facing him to convey her regrets about their prior interaction.
After reflecting on it, she regretted unloading her emotions on him. She had contemplated finding him to apologize but wasn’t sure if he would be accommodating of it.
"I am glad you were emotional. It revealed how you have felt all these years," he replied with genuine sincerity. If she hadn’t vented at him, he wouldn’t have known how she felt all these years.
"You are not upset with me?" She inquired, anxious about his feelings.
"Why would I be?" He retorted.
"You used to dislike my nagging back then, so I just..." she began, but he interjected, clarifying, "I was frustrated with myself then, it had nothing to do with you."
"Oh, I am re...," her words faltered as Dave suddenly pulled her into a protective embrace, shielding her from an approaching drunkard who nearly collided with her.
"So...rr...yy," the intoxicated individual slurred, stumbling away.
Charlotte let out a sigh of relief while still within Dave’s embrace, instinctively locking eyes with him. Their gaze lingered, neither of them moving to break the connection.
"You make me want to sin," he murmured, briefly looking at her enticing lips before swiftly averting his eyes, preventing himself from acting foolishly and damaging their relationship again.
"Th...thank you," Charlotte stammered as she stepped away from his hold, straightening her disheveled attire caused by the abrupt embrace.
"Why are you at the mansion?" Dave inquired.
"Well, when I need to clear my mind, I usually visit a specific bar. That was where I met Sarah, she was also going through a tough time. We became friends and supported each other in moving on from toxic..." She abruptly covered her mouth, realizing what she was about to reveal. She hadn’t meant to mention ’toxic men,’ as Dave was the only toxic man in her life she had to move on from.
Dave smiled, understanding her point, and reassured, "It’s alright."
"She came to our pack to help me prepare for my wedding, but she received news of her own and had to leave suddenly. So now I am here to support her," Charlotte elaborated, explaining her reason for being at the mansion.
Dave nodded, finally comprehending their relationship. He knew that Charlotte likely didn’t have any friends during her infatuation with him, but now the confusion had been cleared. He wasn’t just sure if Sarah had proven to be a good friend to her, the way Charlotte said it.
"You rely on her," Dave observed. He noticed how fondly she thought about Sarah, but the latter didn’t look like she treasured Charlotte.
"Yes, she’s my only friend, and she’s always been there for me," Charlotte replied with a fond smile, reminiscing about Sarah.
"Do you think she feels the same way?" Dave queried, causing a furrow in Charlotte’s brow. Despite their five-year friendship, she wasn’t entirely certain if Sarah relied on her as much as she did. However, considering their closeness, she hoped that their feelings were mutual.
"I suppose," Charlotte responded, somewhat awkwardly.
