Chapter 63: Skimpy gown

Upon waking, Scarlet surveyed her room and let out a sigh when she realized she had overslept, and the day had already turned dark.

As she sat up, she felt a weight on her lap and looked down to find Aurora’s peaceful sleeping face resting there. Had she been so deeply asleep that she hadn’t noticed Aurora’s presence in the room?

Tenderly rubbing Aurora’s white hair, which always intrigued her, Scarlet wondered if her friend had origins beyond just being human, there was something extraordinary about that white hair.

"Hmmm," Aurora shifted, moaning as she woke up, standing up immediately when she met Scarlet’s gaze.

"How are you feeling?" Aurora asked with concern and relief evident in her voice.

"Were you here all day?" Scarlet inquired, prompting Aurora to look out the window, gasping at the darkness outside. Aurora had tried everything she knew to take care of Scarlet since she vehemently opposed the idea of being treated by a doctor, leading Aurora to care for her against her wishes.

Seeing Scarlet’s improved condition, Aurora felt content with her efforts.

Shaking her head, Scarlet frowned as she caught a glimpse of a faint memory of Enoch’s face. She then asked, "Was someone else here?"

Scarlet’s question made Aurora’s heart skip a beat, wondering how she knew about Enoch’s presence while she was unconscious. Reminding herself of the promise she made to Enoch, Aurora lied, "No, I took care of you alone. My poor body," pretending to be in pain.

Scarlet smiled and pulled Aurora to sit beside her on the bed, patting her back affectionately.

"Did I stress you out too much?" Scarlet asked, pouting her lips.

"Yes, I was worried sick and almost fainted from concern. I even considered calling a doctor," Aurora replied with a sigh, recalling how hard she searched for someone to help treat Scarlet without involving a doctor.

Terrified, Scarlet asked if Aurora had indeed called a doctor, but she reassured her, "Relax, I didn’t. By the way, why do you hate doctors so much? Were you a bad doctor in your past life?" Aurora playfully asked, hoping to extract some information from Scarlet, who just smiled and evaded the question.

Thinking back to the faint image of Enoch, Scarlet wondered if her guilt was causing her to think of him. She hadn’t even figured out how to apologize to him. What if she fell ill again upon seeing him? He brought back painful memories she’d rather not revisit.

On the other hand, Aurora was happy that Scarlet didn’t suspect anything. While searching for someone to treat Scarlet, she stumbled upon Enoch, who promptly rushed to take care of her upon learning of her condition.

Although Aurora feared that Scarlet might not want anyone else treating her, she felt it was still better than bringing in a doctor. What mattered most was her friend’s well-being, and Scarlet wasn’t doing well.

Trying to confirm her doubts, Aurora faced Scarlet and asked, "So, only doctors are forbidden from touching you, right?"

"Yes," Scarlet replied, eyeing Aurora suspiciously.

Relieved, Aurora thanked her lucky stars. Enoch possessed excellent medical skills but was not a doctor, making it safe for him to treat Scarlet.

"Let me get you something to eat!" Aurora stood up from the bed and offered, heading for the door, when suddenly a maid entered the room.

"Finally!" The maid exclaimed, looking as if she had discovered a lost treasure. Confused, Aurora asked, "What’s wrong?"

"I have been searching for you all day. One of the maids saw you coming in here," the maid explained, moving closer to Aurora.

"Let me guess, the Alpha needs her?" Scarlet said, rolling her eyes in a bored manner, which made both her and Aurora giggle. They had grown accustomed to the Alpha suddenly summoning Aurora, who could be quite arrogant at times.

"No, I am here to help you dress," the maid replied, and the laughter died down as her words contrasted their expectations.

"What dress? Is there an occasion?" Puzzled, Aurora asked, unable to recall any other party organized in the pack.

"I have an hour left to get you fixed up. Please follow me," the maid wasted no time and went to Aurora’s side, grabbing her by the arms. Aurora was startled and attempted to free herself, but another maid came to assist, holding her in place.

"That darn man! Did he put you up to this?!" Aurora raised her voice as she struggled against their hold.

"Aurora, go with them. I will be fine," Scarlet interjected, urging Aurora to comply and smiling reassuringly.

"But...." The maids didn’t give her a chance to continue protesting, instead bowing their heads respectfully to Scarlet and leading Aurora out of the room.

"Just a minute, she’s not feeling well. She needs to eat," Aurora tried to persuade the maids as they led her away.

"Miss Aurora, you know better than anyone else that we are not doing this of our own will," the maid reasoned with her, which caused Aurora to stop struggling.

Furious, Aurora regretted ever signing the contract. She wondered if she had missed a part in the agreement that took away her freedom of movement.

"Fine, but help me get her something to eat. Porridge or warm stew is fine," Aurora relented and urged the maid to comply.

"That will be done," the maid replied, and they released their grip on Aurora, allowing her to walk freely.

Upon reaching her room, the maids prepared a warm bath for her, and despite her discomfort with being bathed by anyone, Aurora decided to cooperate and get it over with.

After the bath, she was seated by the dressing mirror and subjected to different perfumes and oils for about ten minutes, which left her frustrated.

"Is all of these really necessary?" Aurora asked, growing tired of the special treatments.

"All done, bring it close," the maid said, and a stand with a skimpy blue gown with a slitted front was presented to Aurora.

"Who is this for?" Aurora felt confused, wondering who would wear such an exposed gown that didn’t respect a woman’s dignity.

"You, my lady," the maid declared.
