Chapter 168: Lucas was your mate?
He looked down at her in disbelief, pondering what had prompted her swift change of heart. The realization that her decision was influenced by being in heat weighed on him, causing a pang of sorrow. He knew she wouldn’t have made that choice willingly while sober.
"You are in heat, that’s not the real you talking," he declared, releasing his hand from her grip before exiting the cottage.
"I..." she began, propped on her elbows, but her words trailed off as he departed. How could she persuade him that her desire for him went beyond the heat-induced impulse?
Sighing, she sank back into bed, covering herself while curling up. With no other option, she resolved to endure it until tomorrow, convincing herself that it was just a temporary struggle.
Outside the cottage, Damien stood by the fountain, eyes closed, focusing intently. He sought to reassure himself that her feelings were genuine, yet his ego restrained him from acting unless she truly wanted him.
Despite offering assistance, his conscience prevented him from crossing boundaries without her genuine consent. He understood that breaking down her barriers would take time, but he believed it would be worthwhile.
Returning to the cottage, Damien found Aurora already asleep and sighed in relief. Not having to feel guilty for leaving her distressed, he sat by her side, checking her temperature by placing his palm on her forehead.
Confirming that she was fine, he carefully covered her with the duvet and left her side.
Few days later.
Aurora slowly opened her eyes, her gaze darting around her surroundings until she realized she was in her room. Sitting up, she groaned a little and yawned, stretching her hands along.
It had been over four days since they got back from the phantom hills and Damien had been avoiding her since then, she couldn’t help wondering what caused the coldness towards her.
She had realized he never slept in the cottage that night and purposely left her, but she wanted to know why. She did let him know she wanted him, why didn’t he touch her? She kept on asking herself the same question every time, what was wrong with Damien?
Why wouldn’t he talk to her anymore? It was unlike him not to tease her or insult her in one day. Even Theresa and others knew something was off, and she was forced to say, "He just got busy," even though he mostly sat, working in his study room.
Knock knock
A knock interrupted her thought, prompting her to stand up and walk up to the door. Opening it, she was shocked to find Damien standing in front of her room. He was no longer wearing the warm look he wore four days back, he looked distant and cold, and she couldn’t help feeling disappointed.
This was the cold man she knew from the beginning, how had they gone from warm to cold back?
"I...you..." she stammered, unable to put words together, as she was both nervous and surprised at the moment. Well, it wasn’t her fault he didn’t talk to her for days, and she was now seeing him first thing in the morning.
"Can I come in?" He asked, his voice cold and fierce like he wasn’t here to joke. Immediately, Aurora fixed her composure and answered, "Yes Alpha," raising her head slightly to see his reaction but unlike usual, he didn’t seem to care that she called him Alpha.
"Are you ready for today? Things might get a little tight," he inquired, dropping his hand in his pocket.
Ready? What was happening to...oh no, today was the banquet he organized to introduce her, and announce his return. Why did it never come to her mind to take her bath first thing first?
"Yes, I am. I will get ready in the next ten minutes, you have nothing to worry about." After moments of silence, she replied, offering a warm smile that was only returned with a scrutinizing gaze. Wasn’t he satisfied with her response?
"You didn’t remember today’s event?" He questioned, his gaze so dominating that she couldn’t help swallowing in fear. Why was he suddenly so intimidating?
"I did," she lied, looking away from him to avoid losing her stance. It was already hard enough to breathe with him in the room, staring directly at him would make her lose.
He sighed but didn’t say anything, tempting her to face him, which she eventually did, "Why?" She asked.
"Alpha Lucas, was your mate right?" Aurora didn’t know what happened, but her senses went blank immediately, all she could hear was her breath when he mentioned the name she dreaded the most.
Alpha Lucas? Why was Damien bringing up his name? Is he going to be around? Oh no, she couldn’t face him, it had been over five years, how was she going to face him?
"Wh..why?" She stuttered, her face twisting in a frown, that didn’t surprise Damien. Enoch had already relayed the information about her past to him a few days back, and that was why he was finding it hard to face her. He didn’t know how to act like he didn’t care, and also he didn’t want to act like he cared.
The fact that his mate was once related to a man he didn’t fancy, was annoying to him. He didn’t hate Lucas but he also didn’t like him. He didn’t want to imagine the disgusting look on Lucas’s face, when he saw him together with his former mate, Aurora.
Moreover, he knew how much Aurora suffered and is still suffering from her past, he wouldn’t want her to lose herself once she sees Lucas today. The choices were so inconvenient, that he was finding it hard to decide. He would rather only announce his coming, and put her away from the spotlight, or refuse Lucas entry into the event, which would only cause trouble for him.
He hated unnecessary conflicts, especially when they could be avoided.
"Why didn’t you tell me?" He asked, finding it hard to ask her the real question he wanted to.
