Allure of a Country Maiden
Chapter 943 - 941_1

Chapter 943: Chapter 941_1

About two months have passed. Autumn was over, and the north wind had started blowing. However, the transition of the four seasons was never clear here. Only a few broad-leaved trees would occasionally flaunt their yellow leaves, while the rest retained their deep green throughout. This often made people wonder whether autumn had come and gone in the blink of an eye.

During this time, Xiao’er had again arranged for people to deliver a new batch of yellow dragon fruit saplings to Huzi’s family for planting. The sauce from the workshop was also brewed and ready. She then selected the most perfect recipe for mass production.

Meanwhile, Shangguan Xuanyi had journeyed to the military camp, busy with numerous tasks. He personally selected a group of soldiers for intense training.

The imperial edicts from the emperor urging Shangguan Xuanyi to return to the Imperial Capital arrived one after another. However, Shangguan Xuanyi paid no heed, simply replying via pigeon post that important matters were still at hand and he could not return just yet.

Upon reading the reply, the emperor puffed and glared in rage. However, he was unable to handle his son.

From childhood, Shangguan Xuanyi was always disobedient. If his father had truly taken every disobedience to heart, Shangguan Xuanyi would have been reprimanded countless times by now!

Fortunately, everything entrusted to his son was always perfectly handled, which eased the emperor’s worries. Thus, the emperor decided not to interfere with him too much. Teaching him slacked as well, and the emperor only minded whether his son was dutifully completing his tasks.

The emperor held the principle that regardless of where Shangguan Xuanyi was, he had a duty to complete all the tasks assigned to him. Even when there were none, the emperor would come up with something for him to do.

How could it be fair that his son could roam freely while he himself was trapped inside his golden cage? Thus, Xiao’er realized that Shangguan Xuanyi seemed even busier than when they were in the Imperial Capital.

With Shangguan Xuanyi away in the military camp, Xiao’er had to stay and monitor the progress of the workshop and the mulberry fish pond. It was the first time since their marriage that the couple hadn’t seen each other for almost a month.

Xiao’er couldn’t help but curse under her breath at the emperor each night she spent alone. The emperor was truly at leisure. At this level of leisure, there’d only been a few in history.

They genuinely couldn’t return to the Imperial Capital, only they couldn’t disclose the exact reasons. The stingy emperor was holding a grudge over it.

Since their last visit to Zhan’er Island, almost half a year had passed. Xiao’er hadn’t forgotten that after six months, a significant earthquake, specifically a massive tectonic movement, was expected at Wanli Shitang.

She didn’t know the magnitude of the upcoming earthquake brought about by the tectonic movement, but she was certain it would not be minor.

Though Wanli Shitang was closer to Nangong Country, soldiers stationed on Zhan’er Island, along with the coastal region’s residents, would certainly need to evacuate! The site wasn’t too far from their Minze Country.

Xiao’er also wanted to observe Wanli Shitang after the tectonic movement to see how it could potentially be yielded. That piece of territory held significant military importance, with proper utilization, it could secure the tranquility of their southern border. Anyone who wished to approach their southern border would have to get past the soldiers stationed there first.

The tectonic movement was now just over ten days away; it was time to make arrangements.

Xiao’er had already sent a message via pigeon post to Shangguan Xuanyi, but he hadn’t replied. She assumed that he must be on his way back by now.

Xiao’er, languidly laying on the bed, thought about this and eventually fell asleep.

Shangguan Xuanyi slipped in quietly, careful not to wake her with his cold aura. He quickly entered the spatial ring, took a shower to wash off the cold, then exited the space and stealthily climbed into bed.

As the quilt was pulled open, a wave of cold air flooded the bed. Xiao’er instinctively recoiled.

Seeing this, Shangguan Xuanyi chuckled silently.

Sensing something amiss, Xiao’er woke up quickly. Opening her eyes and glancing around, she saw Shangguan Xuanyi sitting by her, and excitedly exclaimed, "Brother Shangguan, you’re back?!"

Shangguan Xuanyi pulled Xiao’er into his arms, lying back down and pulling up the quilt. "Don’t sit up; it’s cold," he cautioned.

The cold here was different from that of the Imperial Capital. There was no underfloor heating or stoves in winter. Once out from under the quilt, the cold was unbearable.

"Did you manage to sort everything out?" Xiao’er rested her head on Shangguan Xuanyi’s warm arm, whispering her question. Her sleepiness faded in the wake of his return, all but a distant memory.

"Hmm," Shangguan Xuanyi responded absent-mindedly. Seeing that Xiao’er was fully awake, he could no longer resist. Having monastically refrained for almost a month, his hands began to explore her body restlessly.

"How have the soldiers’ training been going?" she asked before being shushed.

"Hush, don’t be noisy!" Shangguan Xuanyi flipped over, pinning Xiao’er beneath him. He bent forward, passionately kissing her lips, smearing gentle kisses all over her, punishing her lack of focus.

Unable to resist, Xiao’er passionately responded in kind.

The night was long, enhanced by the sweet anticipation of their reunion...

The next day, keeping to their normal routine, they woke up. After practicing their martial arts in the spatial ring, upon exiting he began to comb her hair. A couple of strokes in, Shangguan Xuanyi carried Xiao’er back to the bed. Almost a full month of pent-up desire couldn’t be quenched in just one night— he had merely been reaping some interest.

After, Xiao’er sprawled on the bed, too weary to move. Shangguan Xuanyi appeared as energetic as ever.

Sensing the sprightly Shangguan Xuanyi, Xiao’er felt a pang of fear. Afraid he might catch her in a moment of weakness again, she quickly suggested, "Brother Shangguan, I am craving the breakfast you make. Would you please go to the kitchen at the Four Seasons Restaurant and make me something?"

Shangguan Xuanyi instantly saw through her little ploy, did she think just preparing a simple breakfast would exhaust his energy?

Regardless, he acknowledged that he had worn her out. He agreed that she needed to eat well to recover her strength, so he nodded, heading out.

Zhu Yan had been waiting for Xiao’er for quite some time but didn’t see her. Unable to bear it any longer, she came to find Xiao’er.

Yang Liu knocked on the door to notify her: "Madam, Miss Zhu is here."

Xiao’er had fallen asleep again. Hearing the knock, she didn’t hear what Yang Liu was saying and simply said, "Come in!"

Once Zhu Yan entered, she saw Xiao’er sleeping at this hour and rushed to her in concern, "Xiao’er, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?"

Hearing Zhu Yan’s voice, Xiao’er opened her eyes. Upon seeing her, she remembered their planned joint excursion to the mountains. She realized it was late and understood why Zhu Yan came looking for her.

Xiao’er couldn’t help but sit up while the silk quilt slid off her shoulder. Suddenly feeling the chill, Xiao’er quickly grabbed the quilt to prevent any accidental revelation.

Unfortunately, Zhu Yan had already noticed the startling reddish marks on her neck and shoulders. Alarmed, she shrieked, "Xiao’er, what happened to you? Who was audacious enough to injure you like this?"

This left Xiao’er feeling quite embarrassed. Zhu Yan, who had never been married, had absolutely no idea how those reddish marks had appeared!
