Allure of a Country Maiden -
Chapter 885 - 883_1
Chapter 885: Chapter 883_1
Huzi’s grandfather was livid. His veins bulged on his neck and forehead, deepening the dark shadow that loomed on his face. "Are you intent on disgracing us further! Hurry up and leave!" he snarled at Huzi’s grandmother.
In the heat of the moment, they had caused quite the scene, after hearing from Baozi how many nobles had given their family various gifts. They only wanted their share of the respect. Instead, they were left without a shred of dignity.
They stormed out, dragging Baozi along with them.
Baozi couldn’t resist asking, "Grandfather, are we just leaving the gifts?"
"Take nothing! They’re disowning us!" spat Huzi’s grandfather.
"Huzi, your grandpa wants respect! How about you give him a good start?" someone shouted.
On hearing this, Huzi’s face turned scarlet, "Can I do it another time? I don’t have any to give right now!"
"Pfft!"
"Pfft, haha...."
"Haha...."
...
The crowd couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
Huzi’s grandfather felt even more humiliated, hastening his strides.
He could only blame his grandson for causing all this. Even at such a tender age, he knew how to egg him on!
Once they had left, Jingrui whispered to Xiao’er, "Huzi’s mother is quite formidable."
She is so much stronger than her own mother!
How well the villagers understood the family’s situation was indeed surprising. Jingrui was certain that the information had not come from Huzi’s grandparents.
Usually, people didn’t air their dirty laundry in public. If they did, most people would view the daughter-in-law not yielding to her mother-in-law as wrong. Yet, the villagers actually empathized with her.
Xiao’er nodded,"Huzi’s mother handled this situation quite well."
Unbeknownst to both Xiao’er and Jingrui, Huzi’s grandmother had long seen through the true nature of Huzi’s paternal grandparents. She had warned Huzi’s mother in advance to protect her from them. It was only when she heard about Marquis Shengping’s family that she got the idea.
As her parents-in-law left, Huzi’s mother heaved a sigh of relief before running to her husband’s side, "Huzi’s father, how’s your leg?"
The area below the knee of Huzi’s father’s pants was fully soaked in blood. It was a terrifying sight.
"It’s fine, just a minor cut from a fall. It’s not as severe as it appears," he assured.
No sooner had Jingrui heard this than he frowned, "Uncle, you could hardly walk earlier. This isn’t severe?"
"Lin Er, I’ll fetch the carriage and take you to the county clinic!" Huzi’s father’s good friend rushed home without further ado on seeing his condition.
He had made a decent fortune from trading and was able to afford a carriage.
"There’s no need, Wei Zhuang. It’s really fine. I just need a few days of rest," Huzi’s father interjected. He didn’t want to spend the little savings they had on this useless leg of his.
The other villagers also encouraged him,
"Huzi’s father, you really should get it checked."
"Yes! You’ve lost so much blood already. It’s quite frightening to see."
"Go on and see a doctor. It could get complicated if there’s any lingering issue." Whoever said this was worried about Huzi’s father who was the sole carer of the orchard. He was still capable of managing it despite his limp. But what if he lost his ability to walk altogether because they didn’t consult a doctor?
"No! You must see a doctor! Wei Zhuang, sorry for troubling you!" Instead of easing her worry, her husband’s resistance only heightened it. She knew he was reluctant to spend, but what’s the point of money if one loses limb function? They could always earn back the spent money.
"Don’t mention it, sister-in-law," Wei Zhuang called out as he reached the courtyard door.
"Hold on!" Xiao’er broke in. After all, this incident was indirectly caused by their visit, leading to Huzi’s father getting injured. Feeling responsible, Xiao’er stepped up, "Let me take a look at it. I know a bit of medical treatment."
Huzi’s mother was taken aback. The young girl looked no more than in her teens. Could she really trust her medical skills?
Shangguan Xuanyi frowned hearing Xiao’er’s proposal. The only thing Xiao’er knew about medicine was the magical herbs in her dimensional space. They had to check the injury before using the herbs. However, he definitely did not want Xiao’er inspecting another man’s legs. He resignedly sighed and held Xiao’er’s hand, "Let me do this."
Huzi’s mother breathed a sigh of relief. She found it more reassuring to have the older man inspect the injury. If need be, they could still visit the county doctor.
It wasn’t her fault for thinking so. Back then, the youngest certified doctors were in their thirties and often, the older ones were more skilled.
Xiao’er seemed around her late teens. How experienced could she be in medical treatment?
Seeing her hesitance, Xiao’er stepped down and allowed Shangguan Xuanyi to examine the injury. After all, the result would be the same.
She wasn’t relying on medical prowess, but the magical herbs to cure the injury!
Shangguan Xuanyi did possess some knowledge of trauma and bone injuries. It was during his stay at the military camp that he picked up some medical knowledge. After each war, military doctors would invariably be overwhelmed, and Shangguan Xuanyi would step in to help side by side.
Meizi had a good sense of the situation. She brought a bamboo chair for her father right after her grandparents left, "Father, please have a seat."
"Thank you, dear." Huzi’s father gifted his daughter a gentle smile.
A daughter is indeed a little sweetheart!
Shangguan Xuanyi crouched down and carefully felt around the bone structure of Huzi’s father’s wound to check if there were any fractures.
"How did you sustain your old injury?"
"During a war, I fell off a horse." It was more than just a fall. A fellow soldier had killed the enemy and saved him just in time.
"Under which general were you serving?" Shangguan Xuanyi’s voice softened on hearing this.
"General Di," Huzi’s father proudly responded.
After finishing his inspection, Shangguan Xuanyi stood up, "The old injury in your leg probably did not heal properly, resulting in your current inability to walk properly, correct?"
"The doctor said the same." At the battlefield then, with so many injured and dying soldiers, people with lesser injuries like him did not garner much attention.
Doctors in haste just aligned his bones and applied medication before more injured soldiers arrived. It was only well after that Shanguan Xuanyi had ordered doctors to realign bones for all fractured soldiers after attending to severely injured ones. If they were afraid that they’d forget, they should let the injured soldiers remind them.
"If we could find a doctor to realign the fracture properly this time, along with the medicine I can provide, you should be able to walk normally again!"
Just then, Wei Zhuang arrived with the carriage at the entrance of the courtyard.
As he dismounted, he readied himself to carry Huzi’s father into the carriage for a trip to the clinic.
