Allure of a Country Maiden
Chapter 568 - 566

Chapter 568: 566

"Eat it, or leave it! It’s late, you should be grateful there’s food at all! This is what I eat!" The man in black hissed at Xiao’er, so enraged he was ready to chuck the bowl straight at her face.

Who was the captor here and who was the hostage? Was she throwing this tantrum just to humiliate him?

"You want roast chicken and you can’t make any? Chickens can’t see well at night, just catch and cook one. Give us the drumsticks and you can have the rest!" Xiao’er spoke with what seemed like a magnanimous air, her words grating enough to kill with their mere audacity.

He scoffed, she was being deliberately infuriating, he could bet on that!

"There are no chickens on this island! How about bats? Would you like me to roast a bat for you?" All that this godforsaken island had were bats!

Yang Liu’s eyes flickered upon hearing this. She had started to grasp where they might be.

"Fine, no chicken tonight then. But you better cook one up for me tomorrow, along with some grilled fish! Don’t you dare tell me there are no fish here, aren’t we surrounded by water? You better go catch them if there aren’t any! I’d rather starve than eat this swill!"

The man in black could hardly be bothered to retort. Of all the people he had kidnapped, never had he met a hostage as exasperating as her!

No, to be more precise, he had never needed to ’serve’ a hostage before!

And now he was expected to go fishing and roast his catch for her? He’d never even tried doing that for himself before!

Hmph! If she pissed him off any further, he’d roast her instead!

As he was about to exit, Xiao’er piled on, "I need drinking water! Boil it first, I won’t have it otherwise! Also, get me a bed."

Stumbling over the doorstep upon hearing her words, the man in black almost face-planted.

It seemed they had kidnapped one hell of a headache!

Yang Liu couldn’t help but laugh.

After the man in black left, Xiao’er settled down to a meal that she hadn’t tasted in what felt like ages.

Once they finished the food in the bowl, the man in black came back carrying a cup and two stools. He tossed a stool in front of them, "No beds. Sit or not, up to you."

Xiao’er handed her bowl to him, "Go wash it, or it will attract rats."

"Don’t worry, no rats here!" The man in black muttered under his breath that any rats around would have been gobbled up by the bats by now, then took the bowls away with a disgruntled expression.

"This guy’s got decent character!" Xiao’er sat down, leaning against the back of the chair, and felt much more comfortable.

"He’s too naive, though. He gave himself away just by talking! He’s not cut out for this kind of work." Yang Liu sat down, "Miss, if I’m not mistaken, we’re on Bat Island. There are many vampire bats living here, that feed on the blood of animals and humans alike. They can detect humans very efficiently, making it almost impossible for us to escape without being discovered. Vampire bats are terrifying. Thousands of them biting you can drain your blood dry within a blink of an eye." Yang Liu yawned after her explanation. She shook her head, why was she so sleepy all of a sudden?

"Vampire bats?" Xiao’er furrowed her brows.

No wonder there was not a single pheasant to be found on this island! They must have all been consumed by the vampire bats!

Bats natural predators are snakes and lizards but unfortunately, she had a natural fear of reptiles. If she didn’t, she could turn this Bat Island into a Spirit Snake Island!

She wondered if the golden python liked to eat bats. If it did, next time it or Bai Tian came, she would let them devour all the vampire bats on this island!

Xiao’er glanced at the skylight. No wonder it was covered with an iron net. They must be afraid of vampire bats flying in.

The net meant she couldn’t release the homing pigeon. But even if she could, it would be pointless if there were vampire bats around.

Within the space there was a guide bee, but guide bees didn’t fly as far as homing pigeons. Xiao’er wasn’t sure if it could fly all the way to the Imperial Capital.

A single guide bee didn’t have much blood, and Xiao’er suspected that the vampire bats wouldn’t have much of an appetite for it.

Xiao’er glanced at Yang Liu, who had fallen asleep.

Xiao’er had secretly added a tasteless, colourless sleeping pill into Yang Liu’s food which put her to sleep.

Xiao’er released a guide bee and soon she heard the sound of many flapping wings. She guessed that the guide bee was likely completely engulfed.

This strategy didn’t work. The bats were probably so starving that they wouldn’t even let a small wasp go.

Bats were usually more active at night. So, to avoid sacrificing any more guide bees, she decided to quietly release them during the day, hoping Shangguan Xuanyi would find her as soon as possible.

Before Shanguan Xuanyi could arrive, she needed to find a way to control all the bats here.

Xiao’er planned to bring some vampire bats into her space and rear them. That way, she would have control over them and then she could have those vampire bats control the ones outside too.

Aside from the risk, Xiao’er needed to avoid the vampire bats biting Yang Liu. So she would have to make Yang Liu sleep and place her inside the space.

Once Yang Liu was secured, Xiao’er listened to the outside – there was not a sound to be heard. They probably felt quite safe with vampire bats about.

Heaven was truly helping her!

Xiao’er positioned a chair under the skylight, stacked another chair on it, and then climbed onto them. With this added height, she could reach the skylight on the wall.

Xiao’er carefully removed a corner of the iron grid covering the window.

A vampire bat quickly flew over.

Just as it bit onto Xiao’er’s hand, she enclosed it into her space.

If she was going to control all the bats on the island, the most efficient way was of course to control the Bat King.

Xiao’er decided to bring the Bat King into her space, so she stood there allowing the bats to bite her.

One, two, three,... Damn it! Xiao’er had been bitten hundreds of times yet the Bat King had made no appearance. She was about to give up! Since the Bat King wasn’t showing up, she might as well invest more energy in raising her own Bat King!

She was really in agony!

Just as Xiao’er was about to give up, she saw that all the bats flying her way were moving aside.

A large, handsome bat flew over and bit Xiao’er’s hand harshly.

"Seize!" Xiao’er resisted the urge to curse, silently praying in her mind.

Xiao’er had been bitten hundreds of times before finally incorporating the Bat King into her space. Could she consider herself favoured by the heavens?

Xiao’er hastily sealed the iron grid, then climbed down. Looking at her hand, bloodied from the bat bites, she mentally cursed Li Mingfang and those men in black a hundred times!

Being bitten by bats could lead to rabies. Xiao’er dared not be careless and quickly entered her space. She then drank a drop of spirit liquid, ate an Ashoka fruit leaf, and an Ashoka fruit, attending to detoxification, disease treatment, and healing all at once.

Xiao’er observed the group of bats fluttering chaotically within her mental control, seething with pent-up anger. Of course, she could only fantasize about biting them back.
