After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World -
Chapter 1368 - 1368: Moving Forward
While the guests were having fun, there were also those handling their losses. Whether it was a loss in a family, friend, or an entire lifestyle, people handled it differently. For most part, many were trying to move forward.
Even if they had been beaten down by the world, but the end of that war was the beginning of a new life for many.
One of these cases were that of the siblings Jest and Jord from Basset Town.
Jest, who was one of the 'low threat' prisoners of war, was still assigned to the cleaning crew. Some time ago, he had approached Miss Althea and her family during a festival and had asked them to look out for his brother in exchange for information he knew about Basset.
Although what he knew was limited, it did give a good starting point for their spies, and they even managed to find good locations to hang around and get deeper information.
To be honest, Jest knew he was being hopeful. Everyone had so many tasks, why would they go so far as to look for a kid for a bit of information?
Further, the longer the spies stayed there and no news of her brother came, the more hopeless he became. He couldn't demand too much either because he was a mere slave.
Things changed when, a day after the war, he was asked to go to the orphanage.
Things were being handled in a rush and everyone was busy so not much explanation was given. His seniors (the Alterrans in charge of assigning cleaners) just passed him the order and didn't explain anything else. At the time, he just thought he had been assigned to clean the place.
What was funny and sad was that he had a methodology to start at the edges, slowly cleaning his way to the front. So, for the next hour or so of his arrival there, he was stupidly sweeping the leaves and picking the few loose fruits on the ground.
It was only when he reached near the entrance area that he heard people talking by the door. "You should wait inside… the people from the Cleaning Department said he left nearly an hour ago," a gentle voice said. "He is probably just lost. Let's wait for him inside, okay?"
This was followed by a sniffle… and a very familiar voice!
"I guess he got beat up so much he can't tell directions anymore."
Jest's broom fell to the ground, and he immediately ran to the door.
"JORD!!"
…
Jest was so surprised that this happened—and so quickly. After all, it wasn't like their names were at the top of anyone's head.
However, he later found out that Jord, after being sent to the orphanage, insisted that he had a brother in Alterra.
He didn't even know he was alive, but was insistent on it.
Anyway, the siblings' touching reunion filled with tears lasted for quite some time. They were inconsolable, and Helen could only try to give them space. They were quite loud and it attracted many of the other kids so she, as the head of the orphanage, made sure the reunion was not interrupted.
Before she guided the nosy kids away, she went to the brothers who weren't quite sure what to do with the fortune of seeing each other again.
"The Cleaning Department said you can have the rest of the day off," she said. "Jord doesn't have a roommate yet, so you two should catch up there so you don't have an audience.
Jest blinked and looked behind the woman. And indeed, there were many kids watching him cry!
The brothers moved to the room and caught up with each other, including what happened after Jest was sent to Alterra and… what happened to Jord after he left, which made the former hate their parents so thoroughly.
"I'm so glad you are safe…" he said, patting his brother's head. He was also thankful that he had not yet victimized by those bastards.
How could his parents sell their young son off after forcing their older son to go to war?!
They were better off not having parents than parents like those! Thankfully, they were out of their lives now. He just had to work hard to rebuild.
He embraced his little brother, patting his back.
"We will live well from now on," he told him, slowly falling asleep. "I will make sure of it."
…
In Jane's house, another sleepover was happening.
Many children loved Koo, very much. He was an older brother who might be even closer to them than their blood relatives who treated them poorly in their previous lives.
Every child would have a story to remember about Koo, and that was what that night was about—to remember him.
For example, there was a child he took fishing, there was a child he gave snacks to every day, and there was a kid he carried on his shoulders every time they met.
"And he… saved me many times…," Mamu couldn't help but be teary, and several other kids patted his back.
None of the children blamed him. They knew Koo well and he'd have done the same for all of them. Mamu was brave and strong, and he helped in the war like a grown-up. There was no shame in that.
Auntie Jane listened to their stories with a blank expression on her face, but the glaze in her eyes told them she was listening.
Auntie Jane had just been discharged from the hospital, but Doctor Juliet spoke to their neighbors, including Mamu, about certain things to watch out for.
For one, the woman could not be left alone, at least not for a while, but at the same time staying in the hospital wouldn't be good either, especially because Koo took his last breath there.
So Mamu came up with a plan to take care of her, this sleepover being one of them. He did not believe she felt no resentment for him. Even if there wasn't, there might be eventually, but he didn't mind.
He promised to take care of Brother Koo's mother even if she pushed him away.
At some point, after a few kids mumbled about being hungry, Auntie Jane even stood up and started making them a lot of snacks.
They quickly realized she was distracted from the pain by feeding all of them, especially with food Brother Koo loved.
For now, that was enough.
