Later that day, the next edition of the newspaper was sent to the satellites to update them on what had been happening to the main territory, or at least the things they wanted them to know about.
After all, if the enemies wanted to see a copy of the newspaper, they'd find a way to get it. Not all Terrans are loyal either, so they could get someone to translate for them even if they were not Alterran.
Anyway, in the papers, they indicated some events of the war, though, as always, some details were mentioned in relatively vague terms.
For instance, they mentioned that Basset Town attacked with full force, but they were defeated in less than 6 hours.
It also included that the visitors who volunteered to assist in the war—including hundreds of mercenaries and visitors—were awarded contribution points. Of course, they did not specify who the 'guests' were.
This was to show that Alterra's forces during wars were even bigger than their current population and, unlike other territories, the assistance they received was generally for free.
Sure, they gave out contribution points, but the value of that was something Alterra created and not something they lost when they gave it away.
As for the situation about the spies, the initial drafts for this newspaper issue actually did include some information. It indicated that the spies were captured, and a lot of them were.
Even if it wasn't detailed how they were captured, the article was taken down by the Elders so that future enemies would be complacent when they were trying to spy.
Instead, they mentioned how some of Basset Town's spies betrayed Basset after being paid off and offered the products of Alterra. The article was quite boastful, saying some spies were harder than others to convince, but overall it was surprisingly easy.
In reality, Alterra never bothered converting the spies at all. Either they'd be captured and tortured, fed the wrong information, or—if they were evil—just killed directly.
The newspaper also mentioned how Alterra converted the spies and convinced them to feed Basset the wrong information. Alterra had not done this, though, at least not yet. In reality, their misinformation was done in a way that the spies themselves didn't know the data they were bringing was false at all.
This way, their enemies' attention would have some divergence, with them also focusing on making sure the spies they sent would not betray them.
There would also be a seed of doubt about whatever information their spies would bring in. Eventually, hopefully, it would cause some internal conflict.
Perhaps the spies themselves would be so annoyed by the Master territory that they'd offer to betray by themselves!
Even if the issues wouldn't get big or contained, any trouble caused to the enemies when Alterra had yet to truly do anything was very welcome.
They also indicated the approximate number of slaves they received, some of whom were in their Level 30s, as a means to scare enemies away. Or, at least, make them second-guess their decisions.
Interestingly, because Basset Town had mobilized the majority of its forces during the war, there were a lot of prisoners of war who did not become system slaves.
For such people, past the level 30, unless they were deemed redeemable and made oaths, they were just executed to avoid future troubles.
However, for Basset Town, there was no such case as 'redeemable' among the 'free' Level 30s.
Out of the dozens of level 30s left behind, excluding those who became slaves (and were therefore kept alive as powerful additions to their forces), the others had no acceptable moral compass.
Each one of them was driven by violence. Each one would definitely aim to cause damage and sadness as revenge as soon as they got the chance.
No one was simply forced there by circumstance. In all cases, they went into this war with a belligerent heart and aimed for some personal gains, regardless of who they had to step on.
So… for the surviving Level 30s who didn't receive the slave's mark, then they were dead. Even if they swore to make oaths, Alterra did not risk it.
Oaths were vague and could only control people—especially non-slaves—to a degree. They would not risk such powerful 'bombs' walking around their territory!
Birds of the same feather really flocked together, especially in Xeno, where there were few laws and it was fist that ruled best.
Basically, if one territory encouraged murders, its top guards were likely to have the same mindset. Only those who perpetuated what was 'right' and 'acceptable' in that territory would be favored and promoted, and those who had different views would either separate or get culled early on.
For example, Rowan, who had been kicked out to 'backwater' villages because he irked the leading party. He did not agree with their bullying and had gritted a lot of nerves in the process.
Of course, in his case, it was a lucky event. But how many other people had such fortune?
Finally, the last page contained the mass obituary of those who perished in the war. The hope was not only to honor these people, but also in hopes that the news would reach the acquaintances, friends, or families of the deceased.
Speaking of this, through the previous obituaries, they had received letters from people who knew the dead. The letters would often be sent via the caravans that went to and fro the territories.
Through this, a number of bereaved families received donations from friends, some of whom could not move out of the satellites due to various circumstances. However, they had good hearts and were able to scrape up a little something to help the others out, also sent via trusted caravans.
In its own way, hearing such stories made people feel hopeful about humanity.
In a place like Xeno, there could still be such a practice, and that was such a beautiful thing.
