After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World -
Chapter 1350 - 1350: Apologies and Thanks (Part 3)
Eventually, the children finished a portion of their homework and finally noticed that someone had entered. The two kids brightened at the sight of her and immediately shot up from their seats, running to her.
Her youngest, Koo, even raised his arms like a toddler, and she found it so adorable.
Koo had just been diagnosed with an intellectual disability at this point, with them telling her he'd probably keep acting like a 7-year-old even if he was well into his 30s. She didn't really care, she'd just treat him like her baby forever.
Of course, Jane loved her children equally, and their lovely appearance made all the tiredness from work go away.
"Mum! Mum!" Koo yelled, running to embrace her. "Welcome home! Welcome home!"
George smiled as he approached and held her hand, leading her back to the dining table. He carefully put aside their combined study materials and prepared the plates and utensils.
Jane sat down and realized that a simple dinner was already prepared, cooked by her very responsible older son. He was not even 10 years old, yet he already knew how to prepare simple meals for the family.
Today's meal was rice with a small piece of fried chicken, along with a delicious stir-fried vegetable side dish. This was their go-to meal when there as an occasion because it was the most delicious-but-inexpensive meal they could afford.
That said, she couldn't help but look at them curiously. "What's the occasion?"
George smiled, but he did not answer her.
She couldn't interrogate him though because she noticed that her piece was the biggest. She smiled, touched, but she gave a bit of her poultry to each of the boys.
The two boys shook their heads and gave it back to her. She giggled and put it back, gently tapping their chopsticks in reprimand when they tried to do it again.
"But mom… you're the one working so hard."
"Well, you two are the ones still growing," she said. "Come on now, it'll make mummy happy to see you eat a lot."
The boys blinked and looked at each other before reluctantly accepting her point.
The family ate together while the two children told her about their day. They happily chattered about school and their subjects, particularly passionate when their favorite subjects were the topic.
They told her which teacher was nice and fun, and which one was overtly strict and boring. They also told her about their friends, what they did for extracurriculars, and so on.
Jane watched them chatter with a full heart, listening to every word—no, syllable—that they said. She memorized their voices, gestures, and even their breaths.
However, for some reason, her heart clenched the more she looked at them. It was as if there was a feeling of loss that was knocking on her heart but she wasn't quite sure why that was.
All she knew was that she wanted to stay like this, together with her children—forever.
However… a soft voice sounded at the back of her mind, pulling her back from completely succumbing to this tempting thought.
"Please… don't leave…"
Jane was very puzzled, but her eyes were fixed at her two smiling sons. Her heart was warm, but also broken. It was too bittersweet and it confused her a lot.
"Please… come back to us…" the small voice continued. It was of a young boy, and it reminded her of her sons a lot.
As if seeing her reluctance, the two boys across the table looked at her with warm eyes. They scooted next to her and gave her a tight hug.
"Thank you for being our mother," the young George said. "We hope in our next lifetime, you'd still be our mum."
Little Koo nodded, rubbing his fluffy head on her shoulder. "Love you Mummy."
And then they were gone, and all she saw was the plain ceiling of the hospital.
Immediately the reality of everything came crashing down on her—as if pushed to a cliff—and she screamed, wailing, as if she was falling straight to it.
"NOOOO!!" she shrieked, her weak voice cracking as it tore off her chest. "MY SONS! MY SONS!!!"
She tried to sit up, her arms flailing against the unseen restraints. It was the nurses holding her down, afraid she'd hurt herself by moving too much.
"MY BABIES!! GIVE ME BACK MY BABIES!!!" she wailed, begging everyone—anyone—to please just give her back her children.
If they couldn't… then just let her—
It was around this time that small arms wrapped around her stomach, embracing her tightly, not caring if she was moving around so much, not even flinching when she hit him with her elbows in her struggles.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry… Koo is so good, I'm sorry for taking him away from you..." he chanted, hugging her tight. He was already crying hard at this time, and Jane felt the tears through her clothes.
Jane's movement slowed down as she looked at the figure of the young boy. Suddenly, the image of her sons in their youth overlaid with his, and she slowly calmed down.
When she stopped, the nurses finally let go, and the boy lifted his head to look at her. It was not her sons, but at the same time, she didn't want to break in front of a young boy who reminded her of them.
She also knew this child and thought he was a pitiful but kind child. Koo often brought him to their house.
At the remembrance of her son, she couldn't help but burst to tears again. The young boy couldn't help himself and sobbed with her, hugging her tighter. He was embarrassed, but the tears wouldn't stop.
"I… I… Koo died saving me… I'm sorry… wuuuu" he cried, the type where one's breath was heaving as if it was difficult to breath. "I'm sorry… y-you can slap me… you can k-kill me… if it m-makes you feel better… wuuuu—"
The child's cries were heartbroken and Jane, even if she was pushed by her motherly instincts, forced herself to calm.
She shakily wrapped her arms around the little boy's small frame. The boy thought he'd be strangled—something he wouldn't have minded—but instead all he felt was… warmth.
He lifted his head in confusion to see the woman crying, still heartbroken, but also trying to comfort him at the same time.
It was like he could do no wrong, and he'd be loved.
Mamu never knew his parents. They died from a beast mob attack when he was very young. Even when he joined Shinho's group, he was more a member than anything else.
He never knew what it felt like to have parents.
At this time, he thought: This must be how it felt like.
