Chapter 131: Chapter 130 - Wait and See How Much She’ll Regret It!
Prince Rong and Princess Rong have only one daughter, Yongping. After welcoming Xu Yin as their son-in-law, Prince Rong purchased a house on the west side of the Prince Manor for Xu Yin to settle in.However, Xu Yin insisted on refusing the gift from the Prince Manor, opting to pay for it himself.
After ranking high in the Imperial Examination, he received many rewards from the emperor. Later, he entered the Hanlin Academy and became a revered editor there. Further ahead, he was awarded for presenting the "Seven Strategies for Military Governance," gaining both fame and fortune. Hence, he built some wealth over time.
Therefore, although this son-in-law comes from humble beginnings, his position at court was earned by himself, compelling the Prince Rong’s Mansion to treat him with due respect rather than regard him as a "live-in son-in-law."
As Xu Yin entered the Prince Rong’s Mansion, someone was already there to welcome him.
They helped him remove his cloak as he walked inside, greeting a few people while inquiring about recent happenings in the Prince Manor. He then proceeded to the Enrong Hall, where Princess Rong was located at that moment.
In his youth, Prince Rong had a wife from the same hometown, a daughter of a Scholar. During those turbulent years, when this Scholar’s wife was pregnant and returning to her parents’ home, she was killed by bandits. Prince Rong, traveling with her, watched helplessly as his wife and unborn child died.
After numerous perilous situations, he escaped with his life and sought the help of his cousin, whom he had saved in their youth—the current emperor who avenged them.
The emperor, then a young general in the army, decided to revolt partly due to this event. Prince Rong, despite lacking martial skills, risked his life many times to help him, standing up boldly in the face of danger to protect the emperor from former court officials’ pursuits.
Princess Rong’s father was also a General in the Righteous Army, from a family of officials. Although her father died early in battle, the emperor later expanded the forces, providing strength against the official army, and established peace in the rear. The emperor then arranged a marriage between his cousin and Princess Rong, forming their bond.
After marriage, Princess Rong had a son and a daughter; the Princely Heir Yang Xu was the first, and Yongping the second. After Prince Rong was ennobled, he also took two concubines and had two more children with them, both still young.
Yongping resembles Princess Rong closely in her youth, and since she was born after Prince Rong’s ennoblement, she enjoyed affectionate indulgence from her parents. Even as a wife and mother now, she often returns to the Prince Manor for some pampering.
Upon reaching Enrong Hall, Xu Yin glimpsed through the open courtyard gate the scene of mother and daughter conversing together on the terrace in the garden.
As he approached, the well-preserved Princess Rong greeted him with her usual refined smile, "Zixiu is here. Let us serve the meal then."
The maid beside her left, and Princess Rong turned to Yongping below her, "Aren’t you still cooking soup for Zixiu? Go check on it, don’t let it overcook."
Yongping nodded, glanced at Xu Yin, and then departed.
Princess Rong gestured gracefully at the other side below her, "Have a seat and sip some tea. Your father isn’t in the residence today, it will just be the three of us dining. Yongping, concerned about the servants’ careless work, came early to oversee the preparations herself."
Xu Yin nodded, "The Commandery Princess really need not fuss like this. Your humble son-in-law comes from a modest background and has eaten coarse food many times; seeing her toil, I feel distressed."
Princess Rong slowly smiled at his words, pouring him some tea, and said, "Her recent complexion hasn’t been very good, I hear. For the Crown Prince’s coming-of-age ceremony, you’ve been quite busy. However, no matter how busy, you shouldn’t forget to care for those beside you.
"Yongping is sincere. When she decided on you back then, she had eyes for no one else. Zixiu, you must not let her down."
Gazing at the tea before him, Xu Yin raised his eyebrows, "Has the Commandery Princess mentioned anything to Your Highness?"
Princess Rong replied, "She didn’t say much. It’s just that I heard, as busy as you are, you frequently visit the Liang Family, and I understand your gratitude towards them. However, now as my son-in-law, there are things you should handle with discretion.
"The Liang Family is doing well now, with Liang Chen having gained significant merit. What are you worried about?
"That young man from the Liang Family has returned to the capital, you don’t need to rush there so often. It’s more important to care for your own wife.
"Speaking of kindness, my Prince Manor has not fallen short on you, Xu Zixiu. With no one from the Xu family to support you, your future in the Great Zhou Court hinges on us, not the Liang Family.
"You are well-read, a great scholar. These truths I’m speaking of, I’m sure you understand."
Xu Yin listened with lowered eyes, after a pause, he bowed his head deeply, "It was an oversight of your humble son-in-law, Your Highness’s advice is correct."
Princess Rong lifted her delicate chin towards the porch, "Look, Yongping is making broth for you with her own hands. My daughter hasn’t suffered a bit of hardship; from childhood, her father and I never spoke harshly to her. In this life, she treats you sincerely, so cherish this blessing well.
"Henceforth, I don’t wish for my daughter to suffer any grievances."
Xu Yin straightened, nodding, "I shall obey Prince Rong’s Consort’s instruction. I’ll ensure the Commandery Princess is well cared for when I return."
Princess Rong finally raised her eyebrows with satisfaction, "Now that’s the right attitude."
...
Xu Yin walked out of the garden, slowing his pace at the foot of the stone steps.
He lifted his eyes slightly, looking forward, with half his gaze reflecting the green of spring, while half still held the remnant hues of last autumn gathered at the roots of the trees.
After taking two deep breaths, he stepped forward again, exiting the long corridor.
...
Lian Rong went to the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Rites, Liu Xun’s office, following the order of Xu Yin, to mark people in the roster from the government office. Seeing Fu Jun’s name at the top, he remembered the book gifted last time, a work of Grand Preceptor Fu, which Xu Yin still had on his table. He asked, "Has Mr. Fu’s appointment procedure not yet been completed?"
Liu Xun replied, "By rule, it takes a month. For Mr. Fu, given his special circumstances, it’ll still take at least half a month."
Lian Rong ticked off a few names, placing Fu Jun at the forefront, and presented it to Liu Xun.
Liu Xun accepted it without comment, as duties were pressing, and he dared not delay, promptly conveying Xu Yin’s instructions.
Since moving out of Ning Mansion and settling in the small three-entry house, Fu Jun had been surrounded by all kinds of discomfort.
Living in the grand house before, everything was luxurious, from food to clothing, to housing. Moreover, Mrs. Ning managed all matters, big or small, within the house. Now, not only were finances tight, but although he and his mother could live in the small house without issue, it lacked both a garden and a separate courtyard to serve as a study. Additionally, there were no places to sit idly for leisure, making everything feel cramped.
Moreover, the daily food was merely enough to stave off hunger, and the cook was just the one from the family—someone whose cooking they had long grown tired of.
At this point, he realized how impulsive it was to agree to separate out of spite, thinking at the time that Mrs. Ning was merely relying on some family wealth. After the separation, they must struggle as merchants. Contrary to his expectations, life became arduous for him. Just a few days, and he already felt it was hard to sustain.
The only solace rested in his upcoming appointment as Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Rites; following his promotion, his salary would surely increase, easing the burden somewhat.
At noon, upon receiving the message from Liu Xun conveyed by someone, learning that it was specifically appointed by Mr. Lian beside Xu Yin, he was greatly encouraged!
Thinking if even Vice Minister Xu remembered him, then what should he worry about?
In the future, riding the momentum from Vice Minister Xu, along with his own scholarly talent from passing the Imperial Examination, he will climb even higher. Humph, there will inevitably be a day Mrs. Ning regrets!
By then, let’s see how she, having faced various scorns and insults outside, will humble herself to plead for him to come back!
