Chapter 102: Chapter 101: Since I’m Here Anyway
Pei Zhan sat in the tea stall, twirling the hairpin in his fingers.
This hairpin was made of pure gold inlaid with sapphires, with tassels on one end. Besides the engraved character "Zhen" indicating its origin and the material demonstrating the owner’s wealth, it was no different from the hairpins worn by other noble ladies.
Last night on the way back to the mansion, Pei Zhan learned from the captured kidnappers how Fu Zhen entered the tiger’s den alone and overpowered them, injuring Fu Rou in the process. Whether he believed it or not, it was a fact that the Fu Family’s concubine and the kidnappers were injured by Fu Zhen, and it was Fu Zhen who carried the third Madam Du down the mountain by herself.
Pei Zhan’s focus on the matter was naturally on the peculiarities of Fu Zhen as a lady from a civil servant family, but after pondering her oddities, his thoughts involuntarily drifted beyond her actions.
According to the accounts after the fact, it was a trap, and Fu Zhen should have seen through it early on. Pei Zhan couldn’t understand why she had the courage to knowingly walk into danger. Even if Madam Du was her future mother-in-law, she needn’t risk her life like that.
Since she knew halfway that Fu Rou had set up the plot just to gain favor with Madam Du, after seizing the knife, Fu Zhen could have returned to the city to call for help. Delaying a few steps, Madam Du wouldn’t have been in real danger.
Moreover, Pei Zhan didn’t think Fu Zhen needed to curry favor with the Du Family. The Fu Family’s power might not match the Du Family’s, but with Fu Zhen’s capabilities—her skill in single-handedly confronting the kidnappers—did she need to marry to elevate her status? Did she need to seek after a Du Mingcheng?
Did she venture up the mountain alone just to kill her half-sister?
Though young and yet to come of age, that girl had a malicious heart, attempting to harm her elder sister several times, deserving death.
Yet, she didn’t directly kill her. She only crippled her, which made her just as devoid of power upon returning.
Before last night, Pei Zhan had a mixed view of Fu Zhen, skeptical and somewhat prejudiced after witnessing her spying on the Liang Family earlier. But coming back from this incident, he unconsciously began to take this rich family heiress seriously.
Before he could figure all of that out, he received news from Li Jiang and Li Huai in the middle of the night that Fu Jun and his wife had divorced!
Domestic matters usually didn’t concern him, but why would Mrs. Fu, who had endured her husband’s oppression for years, suddenly be determined to split from Fu Jun this time?
If it were because Fu Jun and Mrs. Liu had crossed her bottom line by plotting against Fu Zhen, such things hadn’t happened before; why hadn’t she reacted then?
Had she nothing to lose?
Then what was holding her back before?
Pei Zhan pondered these matters until dawn without realizing it.
Seeing the gold hairpin he’d placed on his desk last night, instead of going to the camp, he headed straight outside the Fu Family estate.
Indeed, the Fu Family was bustling, unlike its usual tranquility. Overnight, that girl’s parents parted ways!
She wasn’t even married yet. Without her official father, would the Du Family go back on their word?...
Fu Zhen arrived at the tea stall, only to see Pei Zhan occupying a corner, with guards taking up all the surrounding tables. No one else could get close, let alone strike up a conversation without yelling!
Fu Zhen casually wiped her hands and sat across from him, "I wonder what urgent matter General Pei has to discuss with me?"
Pei Zhan scrutinized her for several glances before saying, "How are matters at your home?"
Fu Zhen paused in pouring tea, looking across at him—this was indeed unexpected.
He actually cared about her family affairs?
But Fu Zhen didn’t hide anything, "My parents have divorced. They spent the night dividing the property, and this morning I saw them off out of the mansion. I haven’t even had a break, yet I didn’t expect you, General Pei, to summon me urgently here."
Contrary to her expectations, Pei Zhan didn’t mock her situation but instead asked, "Is there anything I can help with?"
"Help?"
At this, Fu Zhen found it even more peculiar! Her mind swiftly turned a couple of corners before she asked, "Is there something General Pei wants from me? If there’s something serious, don’t hesitate to say. Since your two guards helped my mother greatly yesterday, I definitely won’t refuse!"
Pei Zhan’s good mood was ruined by her words. His gaze slanted toward her, "If I’m looking for you, how could it be for anything unseemly?"
"That’s not for sure." Fu Zhen placed her chin on her hand, resting on the table, blinking her eyes, "After all, I do have quite a nice face."
She was thoroughly pleased with this appearance. Damn, in her previous life, she never dreamed of being this beautiful.
Pei Zhan looked up at the sky without expression, "Put that thought away! I’m not interested in your type."
Fu Zhen tapped her finger on her cheek, "Then what do you want from me?"
"I was just passing by." Pei Zhan pulled out the hairpin and tossed it in front of her, "Thought I’d return this to you."
The brat’s face indeed had a bit more flesh compared to when they first met.
But still too thin, with nothing much to look at.
"Why is my hairpin with you?" Fu Zhen picked up the hairpin in surprise, instantly recognizing it as the one she wore yesterday.
In truth, she didn’t even know she had lost it, thinking of all that happened as soon as she got back to the mansion; how could she pay attention to such a thing? But she never expected it would end up in Pei Zhan’s hands.
"I found it in the Mountain God Temple." Pei Zhan glanced at her, "Miss Fu, you are indeed extravagant. This hairpin is worth at least two or three hundred taels of silver, and you just let it fall in the wilderness. Haven’t you heard of not flaunting your wealth? Next time when chasing thieves, remember to keep your belongings safe to avoid more trouble."
Fu Zhen casually inserted the hairpin back into her hair and laughed, "General Pei has a lot to say today."
Pei Zhan paused, then stood up, "I’m leaving!"
Words that don’t connect are excess.
Fu Zhen reached out to pull him back into the seat, "Why the rush! You’ve already come!"
Pei Zhan surprisingly couldn’t do anything about her and looked at her irritably, "What else do you want?"
Fu Zhen beamed, "Didn’t General Pei just ask if he could help me? I actually have something!"
Pei Zhan held his tea and said, "I was merely asking if you needed help, I didn’t say I would help you."
"It’s the same!" Fu Zhen continued, "It’s about my father being promoted to Director of Rites; I haven’t had the chance to thank the General."
Pei Zhan sipped his tea, "No need, it was just a transaction between us."
"Can this transaction be changed now?"
Pei Zhan stopped, "Changed?"
What new trick is she playing?
