Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Making a Will

Driving the brand-new Citroën back home, Chen Feng parked right in front of the house.

As soon as he got out of the car, his mother saw him.

Zhao Xiaolan hurried out from behind the counter of the small store and called out to Chen Feng, "Is this car newly bought?"

"Yes, just bought it, and there was a discount."

Chen Feng couldn’t tell the truth and could only put it that way.

"You still have money? You actually bought a car, how much did it cost?"

"I bought it on credit. The down payment was just tens of thousands, and the total price was around one hundred and seventy to eighty thousand," Chen Feng understated.

Zhao Xiaolan relaxed a bit upon hearing the price.

Buying a car worth hundreds of thousands on credit had become quite common in the countryside nowadays.

"Well, it looks alright. Just be careful when you drive it yourself," Zhao Xiaolan advised.

Chen Feng shook his head, "I’ll let Dad and Big Brother drive this car. I have another car in Xiu Zhou, which is a bit better than this one, and I’m more used to it."

"Shen Lin gave you that car?" Zhao Xiaolan asked, surprised.

Shen Lin always had a car, first a Mini, and then later a Volkswagen.

"No, I bought it second-hand, but it’s better than this one."

"Why buy another then? Think you have too much money?" Zhao Xiaolan complained. "You should return it."

"How can I return it? Even if I return it, it would be as a used car, and it would be a huge loss. Look, I bought this car because there was a big discount. And don’t we need a car at home? We can all use it together. When I’m here, I’ll use it, otherwise, Dad and Brother can."

"Really. You should have discussed such a big matter. Since it’s for home use, you should have let your Dad and your brother contribute some money."

"Why quibble over small things like this among family? Just consider it a gift from me to Dad."

"Although your Dad got his driver’s license years ago, he’s been too scared to drive a private car, mostly just small trucks."

"If he can drive a small truck, he can drive this car too. Let’s go inside, there are customers coming."

Chen Feng finally managed to dismiss his mother’s concerns and went to take a shower with a bit of a headache.

He had been busy all afternoon, especially when visiting houses, which involved a lot of walking and made him sweat profusely.

After the shower, it was already time for dinner. The family sat together again.

The Citroën undeniably became the center of conversation, and Chen Feng was bombarded with questions once more.

He had no choice but to fabricate a story, saying a friend was selling cars in the county city with an employee discount, and he couldn’t resist buying it.

Thus, the family reluctantly accepted it.

In fact, his father, Chen Dayong, and his brother, Chen Rui, were quite happy.

They had wanted to buy a sedan for a long time but weren’t financially strong enough before. And since Chen Rui had a small truck that was just about functional, they had simply delayed the purchase.

Now finally having a sedan, which would be shared by the family, they were of course thrilled.

Not to mention, it would be much more convenient for anyone in the family who fell ill or needed to visit relatives.

The family finished dinner cheerfully, and then Chen Rui unceremoniously asked for the car keys to test drive.

The next afternoon, Chen Feng first went to the real estate agency to collect the property certificate, then, incidentally, asked Little Yang for the best local law firm.

Little Yang, being a local of the county city and quite well-connected despite his youth, immediately recommended a law firm.

Chen Feng searched online in the car and found that the law firm indeed had some renown and appeared reputable.

Chen Feng directly called the law firm to discuss his matter and after communicating with them, it was settled.

It was just a few minutes’ drive to the law firm, where he reported his name and soon met the firm’s main lawyer, Attorney Chen Yaobo, one of the firm’s partners.

After some discussion, they quickly determined the contents of the will.

The main points were five. First, his own name on the car was given to his father and brother; second, the top-floor apartment in the prestigious building was given to his brother as a school-district residence for his two nieces; third, his shares in the car beauty shop were given to his brother Chen Rui at no cost; fourth, he had already bought elderly and medical insurance for his parents, for specific details contact Chen Feng’s old classmate Wang Fang; fifth, all other properties under his name would be inherited by his parents.

The rest of the content consisted of reassuring words for his parents, and his requests for his brother to fulfill his filial duties and take good care of the parents.

He had thought about the content of the will for many days.

He dictated it, and Attorney Chen Yaobo helped him polish the language, typed it up on a computer, made slight modifications, and had Chen Feng review it.

Once confirmed correct, it was printed out, signed, and Xia Zhao stamped, then at Chen Feng’s request (and with additional payment), Chen Yaobo also signed his name and sealed it with the law firm’s stamp.

Then, Chen Yaobo accompanied Chen Feng to the notary office to notarize the will.

Thus, the will was formally established, and was absolutely secure.

As long as Chen Feng passed away, Chen Yaobo would proactively contact Chen Feng’s parents and then read the will, which was legally binding.

After settling the will, Chen Feng felt relieved of a major concern.

Taking advantage of some time in the afternoon, Chen Feng went to the mall to buy a set of nourishing health products and an electric footbath, and then drove to the old district of the county.

The layout of the old district hadn’t changed much in over a decade.

Arriving at a residential complex, he parked the car, carried the gifts, and walked into the complex.

The gatekeeper, an old man, was dozing, and Chen Feng easily entered.

He made his way to a familiar unit building, C Building, Apartment 303, easy to remember, and rang the doorbell.

Soon, he heard footsteps inside.

"Who is it?" an elderly male voice came from inside.

"I am a student of Mr. Zheng, coming to visit her."

"Ah, all right, just a moment."

The door opened, revealing a man in his seventies.

"Hello, I’m Chen Feng, a student of Mr. Zheng, who taught me for two years in high school. I heard she hasn’t been in good health these past two years, so I came to visit her."

"Thank you, that’s very thoughtful of you. Please, come in."

Chen Feng had learned from Wang Fang the day before that their high school homeroom teacher, Mr. Zheng, had been bedridden for two or three years, so he made a special trip to visit.

After they were divided into arts and sciences in the second year of high school, Mr. Zheng had been his homeroom and Chinese language teacher. She took great care of all the students in the class, including him, and the classmates had always had a very good impression of her.

The memory that stood out most to Chen Feng was the time he was extorted by some delinquents outside of school for a month’s living expenses. He didn’t dare tell his family and could only borrow money from classmates to get by. When Mr. Zheng heard about it, she took the initiative to accompany him to file a police report, and they actually managed to catch the gang.

Moreover, at his request, Mr. Zheng didn’t inform his family about the incident and even lent him three hundred yuan.

Such teachers, who are responsible and have a sense of justice, are truly rare. Therefore, Chen Feng had always respected her and was grateful.
