After my divorce, I started to have good luck
Chapter 20: A Great Man Need Not Worry About Not Having a Wife

Chapter 20: Chapter 20: A Great Man Need Not Worry About Not Having a Wife

Chen Feng heaved a sigh of relief in secret. Having encountered this woman by coincidence so many times had left him without an explanation, and it would really have been troublesome if she were looking to pick a fight.

With this in mind, he decided that after returning to Xiu Zhou this time, he would immediately pack his stuff and go back to his hometown. After that, chances were he wouldn’t have any more accidental meetings.

He sat down in his seat and reclined, and soon after, the plane took off.

Just as Chen Feng had closed his eyes, he heard the woman in the seat next to him, Zhang Jingwen, lean over and ask, "Tell me, how did you get my flight information? Do you have contacts in the airline?"

Chen Feng was too exasperated to retort. As an ordinary citizen, he didn’t have such influential friends or connections, yet he didn’t want to respond for fear she might trouble him after landing. Denying or affirming her question both seemed inappropriate.

If he denied it, Zhang Jingwen would certainly not believe him, but admitting it was also out of the question because it would admit to wrongdoing, suggesting he harbored ill intentions by prying into her privacy.

After thinking for a moment, Chen Feng could only say, "I only found out which flight you were on, not the specific seat. It’s just a coincidence that I’m sitting next to you."

"Really?" Zhang Jingwen seemed skeptical.

"Really. I don’t have any friends who work inside the airline company. I just called the airport customer service and asked about your flight."

With this explanation, Zhang Jingwen seemed somewhat appeased.

However, she then asked, "Where are you from?"

Chen Feng thought about it and decided to answer honestly, "Lu City."

"Oh, Lu City, huh? I have a classmate from there too. It’s been a long time since we’ve been in touch. But since you’re from Lu City and you’re on a flight to Xiu Zhou, you must be quite persistent in chasing stars."

As Zhang Jingwen finished her sentence, she looked at Chen Feng with a slightly odd and complex expression, evaluating him. His appearance was alright, albeit a bit overweight and older.

His clothes were not particularly stylish, but he must have some money; otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to afford flying first class and staying in five-star hotels.

Hearing her say this, Chen Feng could only awkwardly explain, "I work in Xiu Zhou."

"I see," Zhang Jingwen said, not really believing him, but she didn’t press the matter. Instead, she offered some advice, tinged with a bit of nagging concern, "In that case, just focus on your work when you get back. Moderate support for your idol is fine; just don’t become one of those obsessive ’sasaeng’ fans – that would only make me dislike you, even to the point of calling the police. Do you understand?"

What else could Chen Feng say? He could only nod as a compliant fan, "Mm, I understand. It won’t happen again."

Satisfied with his response, Zhang Jingwen nodded contently and reclined back into her seat.

The rest of the flight passed without conversation.

When it was time to get off the plane, neither of them said any sort of goodbye. Chen Feng couldn’t be bothered, and Zhang Jingwen was concerned about giving him the wrong idea.

Chen Feng waited until the end to leave the plane, deliberately lingering at the airport for an extra fifteen minutes to avoid running into Zhang Jingwen again. Then he finally called a rideshare.

He made it back to his rental apartment without incident, took a bath, changed clothes, and prepared dinner.

It was already late, not an ideal time to head back to his hometown. Chen Feng had booked a ticket for the next day and sent a voice message to his mother, Zhao Xiaolan, via WeChat, informing her he would stay at home for a while.

His mother immediately inquired about what was happening.

Chen Feng didn’t attempt to hide the fact that he was divorced, since it was inevitable that the truth would come out anyway, and told her straightforwardly.

There was a long silence on the other end, over half an hour, before she sent another voice message.

[Sigh, my son, I don’t even know what to say to you. I thought at first that it was Shen Lin who wanted the divorce, but it turns out you were the one who initiated it. What’s going on? Don’t you like her anymore? With your job being what it is, barely hanging in there, and Shen Lin having a stable position, a secure job. She didn’t look down on you – you should be thankful. Yet, you’re the one having issues with her?]

Clearly, his mother had talked to Shen Lin, who had placed all the blame on him. But in truth, it was indeed him who had proposed the divorce.

[Mom, it’s not that I look down on her, it’s that she looks down on me. She deems me a middle-aged, greasy man without ambition, without a future. In short, she doesn’t look up to me anymore. Anyway, over the past two years, our feelings for each other have grown colder and colder. Apart from living under the same roof, we hardly ever communicate. Continuing like this, we both feel worn out, better to just end it early.]

Chen Feng spoke the truth; he wouldn’t belittle himself intentionally by taking all the blame for the divorce.

[Sigh, all right, all right. What’s done is done, what else can we do about it? I was worried from the start that she was out of your league, afraid you couldn’t keep her. And sure enough, it’s only been a little over two years, and you’re already divorced. Sigh! Your job isn’t going well now either, it might be good for you to come home for a while. We’ll talk more once you’re back.]

Zhao Xiaolan was obviously exhausted by it all, but she also knew her son must be feeling terrible, so she didn’t say much more. It seemed the matter was, for the time being, settled.

But once he got home, he was bound to endure a round of nagging.

Later on, his elder brother, Chen Rui, called, and they talked for more than ten minutes, mainly words of comfort, like ’A great man doesn’t lack for a wife, there’s plenty of fish in the sea,’ and so on.

The brothers were quite close, but as they aged, they saw each other less and less over the years, especially with wives and kids to attend to. Their communication gradually decreased.

In recent years, they only exchanged messages on WeChat during festivals and holidays.

Other than that, they hardly ever called unless there was something important.

Nevertheless, blood was thicker than water, and since there was no conflict between them, they did care about each other deep down.

This rare long call from his elder brother made Chen Feng feel very warm inside.

In life, in the end, the ones who truly care for you unconditionally are probably only your own family.

Spouses can be very reliable at times but not so much at other times; many become enemies after a divorce. From closest to most estranged, such is life.

At least Chen Feng and Shen Lin parted amicably, so he had no real complaints.

The next day, Chen Feng drove to a large shopping mall for a spree, buying clothes and health products for his parents, gifts for his brother and sister-in-law, and presents for his two little nieces.

After getting these, Chen Feng drove to Fuman Building to eat.

The Cantonese cuisine here was excellent; Chen Feng had eaten here a couple of times when company leaders had entertained clients, and he had always remembered it fondly.

A few days before, he would have balked at the expense, but now, that was not an issue.

After parking, he walked into the Fuman Building adorned with its antique architectural style, grand plaque, and upturned eaves that made it stand out on the street.

He completely ignored the two pretty greeters in split-sided qipaos and strode past them, heading for the counter.

"Hey! Hey! Uncle!"

From the side, Qin Xiaorou, that wild girl, suddenly charged over, blocking his way, her face filled with surprise as she looked at him.
