Chapter 17: Chapter 17 Do You Believe It Yourself?
Zhang Jingwen ate the sumptuous breakfast delivered to her hotel room before waiting for two bodyguards assigned by the company to arrive; then, she left with her agent Wang Yuee.
The car provided by the company was somewhat low-end, costing less than a million, but it was passable.
They arrived at Beijing TV Station at about 9:30 am, half an hour earlier than scheduled.
At ten o’clock sharp, they started shooting the program in the studio; it was a show about film and television drama commentary.
Zhang Jingwen was an actress who had just started her career and had starred in the fantasy drama "Immortal Destiny," which was about to go on air soon, and she was there for promotion.
This episode was about introducing "Immortal Destiny," and as the leading actress, Zhang Jingwen talked about some interesting filming anecdotes and behind-the-scenes snippets during the show.
The recording went smoothly, and by noon, they left the TV station and headed back to the hotel by car.
Then, the car she was in got rear-ended again.
This time, the driver wasn’t Sister E, but a driver-slash-bodyguard sent by the company, who drove very steadily and didn’t brake abruptly.
Still, they got rear-ended.
Though it wasn’t her car, she was sitting inside, and this had already happened for the second time consecutively.
Such bad luck!
"How did you drive?"
One of the bodyguards in the passenger seat got out of the car, furiously coming over to bang on the door of the taxi.
This was the company’s car, driven by the two bodyguards, and although they wouldn’t have to pay for the repairs, they were likely to get a reprimand from their supervisor afterward.
The taxi driver had clearly been distracted just now and failed to maintain a safe distance with excessive speed, unable to brake in time.
"Get out!" The bodyguard, enraged, kept banging forcefully on the car window.
The taxi driver was initially submissive, but seeing the bodyguard’s aggressive manner and realizing he was fully at fault, he heatedly grabbed a wrench from the glove compartment, opened the car door, and stepped out.
"What the hell are you banging for? Just a fender bender, right?" The driver brandished the wrench, confronting him head-on.
Seeing the driver was even more aggressive than himself, the bodyguard threw a punch right into his face.
The driver hadn’t reacted when he was quickly thrown to the ground, and his wrench was snatched away.
Chen Feng, seeing the bodyguard continuing to beat the driver, quickly opened the car door and shouted, "Stop it! Any more and you’re going too far."
The bodyguard glared at Chen Feng, "None of your business! Get back inside!"
Since this was a taxi, besides the taxi driver, obviously there was a passenger; the bodyguard didn’t target Chen Feng, however.
But seeing Chen Feng getting out of the car, the other bodyguard in the driver’s seat also hurriedly got out, unwilling to let his colleague be at a disadvantage.
"Let him go now, and we can still settle this peacefully. If you don’t let go and keep hitting him, this becomes a public disturbance. Right now, it’s just a regular traffic accident."
Chen Feng wasn’t intimidated by these two; he calmly tried to persuade them.
The driver pinned to the ground took the opportunity to submit, "Buddy, I acted rashly just now. Let me go, and I’ll forget everything happened."
After exchanging glances, the two bodyguards finally released the taxi driver.
True to his word, the taxi driver calmed down and voluntarily took full responsibility for the rear-end collision, immediately making a call to his insurance for the claim.
Sitting in the back seat, Zhang Jingwen morosely said to Wang Yuee, "These last few days have really been unlucky."
Wang Yuee was also dismayed, with rear-endings happening twice in a row, their luck was indeed bad.
"Let’s get out. We’ll call a taxi to go back."
Yesterday, both of them stayed behind to deal with the accident, which wasted quite some time.
Since it wasn’t their car this time, naturally, they didn’t want a repeat.
"That’s all we can do now. Luckily, I’m not yet famous; otherwise, I would definitely be trending."
"You’re overthinking it."
...
The two women got out of the car and then they saw Chen Feng.
Almost simultaneously, they widened their eyes and both cursed "fuck" in their hearts.
They were women, so they had to keep their composure and didn’t shout the words out loud.
"Why is it you again? Who exactly are you? Why have you been following me?"
With two bodyguards present, Zhang Jingwen felt emboldened and stepped forward, staring at Chen Feng and loudly questioning him.
Now, even Wang Yuee started to doubt Chen Feng.
Once or twice could be a coincidence, but surely not the fourth and fifth times?
How could there be so many coincidences happening in a row?
At this point, Chen Feng could only describe his feelings with the words "fuck."
Damn, this really was too coincidental!
But this time, even he knew that talking about coincidences wouldn’t be convincing.
"What? Can’t find an excuse now? Didn’t you say it was all a coincidence yesterday? Be honest, are you my secret fan?"
Initially, she looked fierce, but by the end, her eyes were slightly bright and expectant as she looked at Chen Feng.
"Secret fan?"
Chen Feng expressed confusion.
Zhang Jingwen nodded repeatedly, "Yes, secret fan. That is, those fans who are crazy about their idols. I think you’re one of those? Although I really dislike people like you, I must say, you do have good taste. I’ve only just debuted a few months ago, and you already recognized my potential, knowing I will become a big star. However, I must say, this kind of behavior is very inappropriate. If you like me, please support me in legitimate ways. Don’t follow me and definitely don’t interfere with my personal life. Otherwise, I will be very angry and might even call the police and have you arrested. Do you understand?"
Chen Feng was utterly confused and shook his head, "I am not your so-called secret fan. Believe it or not, I can only say, these instances have really all been coincidental."
"So many times all coincidental, do you believe it yourself?" Zhang Jingwen looked at him with disdain.
Even Wang Yuee was secretly shaking her head; she had been deceived before, believing his stories about coincidences. But now, if you still talk about coincidences, even a three-year-old wouldn’t believe it.
Chen Feng felt awkward shaking his head; telling the truth yet not being believed, should he lie and say he was her secret fan to be believed?
Chen Feng felt helpless.
"Fine. I understand you have concerns, afraid of being looked down upon by me, or that I will call the police on you. Rest assured, as long as you don’t follow and harass me anymore, I’ll forgive you. Do you want an autograph? I can even take a photo with you."
Seeing her eager smile, Chen Feng thought about it and, to avoid trouble, decided he’d play the part of the secret fan. Otherwise, this crazy woman might really call the police.
So, Chen Feng subconsciously nodded and smiled naively, "Thank you then."
"Where should I sign?"
Zhang Jingwen quickly pulled out a pen from her small bag, her face all smiles, her eyes eager.
Chen Feng patted his pockets and found nothing. Deciding to go all-in with the act, he unzipped his jacket, turned around, and said, "Please sign on the back of my shirt."
He was wearing a jacket over his shirt.
Seeing him do this, Zhang Jingwen felt even more satisfied. Only true loyal fans would do such a thing, letting their idol sign their clothes; this was true love.
"Okay, squat down a bit."
Chen Feng squatted down, as Zhang Jingwen lifted his jacket and, with her pen, swiftly wrote her elaborate signature on the back of his white shirt.
She had practiced her artistic signature for a long time, and today it was finally being put to official use.
In that moment, Zhang Jingwen felt like she was already a big star.
