Chapter 104 - 88 Friends
Chapter 104: Chapter 88 Friends
In the beginning, Ning Wei managed to sit quietly between the two, listening to Chen Feng and Qin Zhen chatter in their hometown dialect.
Of course, she couldn’t understand it.
It didn’t take long before she began to feel annoyed, repeatedly covering her mouth with her hand to cough softly, turning her head to look around with frequent frowning, seemingly uneasy with the noisy environment.
Or one could say, disdainful.
Seeing this, Chen Feng checked his phone—it was almost 9:30 PM. It was admittedly early and truth be told, Chen Feng wanted to chat more with Qin Zhen, but his girlfriend had come specifically to be a "third wheel," wedged between the two men, which made him feel uncomfortable.
So, Chen Feng took the initiative to end the get-together, suggesting they meet up another time.
Qin Zhen, obviously aware of Ning Wei’s presence and that it wouldn’t be good to drink and chat freely, nodded in agreement.
Chen Feng called over the lady boss to settle the bill and pay. Qin Zhen didn’t bother to be formal about it—the two of them had always had an arrangement where whoever had money would pay. Now that Chen Feng had money, it was naturally his treat.
Qin Zhen put his arm around Chen Feng’s shoulder, speaking in a low voice with a hint of apology, "It’s a bit of a letdown to end the drink like this. Next time we get the chance, let’s have a proper drink together."
Chen Feng laughed and said, "No worries. Don’t go back and give her a hard time. Her nervousness about you just means she loves you a lot. You’ve got to cherish that, especially when she’s that beautiful and comes from a good family background. Plus, her temper doesn’t seem too bad at first glance. Why not just go for it?"
"Get lost! We just met and you’re already speaking highly of her, whose side are you on?" Qin Zhen said irritably, shaking Chen Feng vigorously by his shoulders.
And damn, this guy’s grip was strong.
"Fuck! Can you not be so affectionate with me? People will start thinking we’re a couple."
Upon hearing this, Qin Zhen, startled, quickly released his arms and stepped a meter away, with a look of disgust on his face.
Then, the two of them looked at each other and burst out laughing.
They had had many such moments back in their school days, always with the perfect expressions, and now, realizing the humor, they both laughed heartily.
Ning Wei, standing to the side and not understanding their hometown dialect, was even more clueless as to why they suddenly laughed so loudly. She felt bewildered and experienced a sense of being isolated and ignored, even overlooked.
The three of them walked out of the food street together. Ning Wei had driven here, and her car was parked not far away, but Chen Feng declined her offer to ride together. After watching them drive off, he walked back on his own.
In the car, as soon as Qin Zhen started the engine, Ning Wei couldn’t hide her jealousy, "You and your friend seem really close. Have you known each other for a long time?"
"Yeah. We met when we were sixteen, high school classmates for three years, then at the same university for two years. To be honest, he’s my best friend from back home. So, next time I go out with him for drinks, don’t spoil our mood like you did today."
Qin Zhen couldn’t hold back and complained.
They could have had a good catch-up and gotten properly drunk after such a long separation.
But Ning Wei had insisted on coming and dampening the spirit, which annoyed him a bit. One reason was that Ning Wei was too clingy, and the other was that he felt embarrassed by Ning Wei’s somewhat impolite behavior towards Chen Feng.
Ning Wei, with a look of grievance, said, "I was just missing you, okay? And I was worried you’d get so drunk you wouldn’t be able to make it home. I feel more at ease being with you."
"Alright, thanks for your good intentions. But I won’t get drunk that easily, and even if I do, you can always come and pick me up if I call you. There’s no need to follow us and dampen our spirits. Plus, next time, be a little more polite and cordial to my friend. You barely interacted with him this time, and your initial smile was pretty fake..."
"What am I supposed to talk to him about?" Ning Wei said somewhat angrily, "He’s your good friend, not mine."
She had a point, and Qin Zhen found himself at a loss for words.
"Fine. In the future, when I go out with him for drinks, just let us be."
"I’m your girlfriend, why can’t I care? What if you get drunk and something happens to you outside? Don’t tell me you can hold your liquor or something. I’m just looking out for you, I don’t want you to have an accident."
Qin Zhen: "..."
Chen Feng didn’t get up until almost noon the next day. They had drunk almost two cases of Budweiser the night before, averaging at least 20 cans each, which was quite a lot to take in, and the aftereffects were still somewhat strong.
Fortunately, when he woke up the next day, he had no headache, sore throat, or stomach trouble, which surprised and pleased Chen Feng.
In the past, as long as he had barbecue and beer, there would usually be some issues the next day, such as a headache, sore throat, or stomach trouble, but not this time, which was a pleasant surprise for him.
Lying in bed, he picked up his phone and saw two missed calls, one from Lin Wan and another from Qin Zhen.
Since it was noon, Chen Feng decided to call Qin Zhen first. It was nothing important, just Qin Zhen asking how he was feeling after drinking so much the previous day and whether he had thrown up.
Qin Zhen’s concern, of course, came with the hope of hearing that Chen had encountered some mishaps, so he could take a bit of schadenfreude pleasure in it.
But no, there really weren’t any issues, which inevitably left Qin Zhen a bit disappointed. This morning, since he had to go to work, he still felt a bit dizzy when he woke up early.
Chen Feng also casually asked how Qin Zhen was, and Qin Zhen hastily assured that he was fine.
They chatted for about fifteen minutes and agreed to meet up again tomorrow; Qin Zhen would choose the place, and then they ended the call.
After this phone call, Chen Feng checked the unread WeChat messages.
Sun Xiaorui and Xiao Ya had both sent him several.
Sun Xiaorui told him that her father’s condition had stabilized and he could start speaking slowly again. He was expected to stay in the hospital for another couple of weeks before being discharged.
This was good news for her father and also good news for Chen Feng. He was looking forward to her return every day.
So, Chen Feng replied with an encouraging animated GIF.
He also directly transferred 8,888 yuan to her via WeChat, saying it was a gift for her dad.
Sun Xiaorui soon responded with several happy and kissing emojis, and she eagerly accepted the money.
Xiao Ya mentioned that it was her first day working at the milk tea shop and sent him a few pictures of the place. The last photo showed her in a Japanese-style work outfit and apron, making a cute face.
After looking at them, Chen Feng didn’t reply.
As for the WeChat messages and missed call from Lin Wan, Chen Feng also ignored them for the time being.
He got up, washed, showered, went downstairs to grab a couple of pastries and had them with milk, treating it as a late breakfast.
Going back upstairs, Chen Feng once again stared at the Lanting Preface on the wall and soon entered that dizzy state again.
Time flew by, and when Chen Feng came to, he picked up his phone and noticed that 42 minutes had passed, though it had felt like only a few minutes to him.
The time seemed long, but it was much shorter compared to the nearly two hours he had experienced last time.
This made Chen Feng wonder if the effect the Lanting Preface had on him was gradually diminishing.
Chen Feng wanted to try again but after staring at the calligraphy for several minutes without entering that state, he decided to give up for the time being.
He could always try again later, there was no rush.
