Chapter 34: Who Marries the One They Love

Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Who Marries the One They Love

As their bodies pressed closely together, Florence Fuller felt something was wrong. Yet, she was trapped and had no room to resist. She anxiously shouted, "Alright, alright, I apologize to you, I apologize!"

Luke Gardiner’s eyes darkened, and he suddenly got up, releasing her.

Florence Fuller breathed a sigh of relief.

"Go home." He glanced at Florence Fuller, noticing her clear relief with some displeasure, "Have someone deliver the things to my car."

Florence Fuller rolled her eyes.

Back at the old house, the Grace Linney couple had also arrived. Eleanor Sussex couldn’t help but run over when she saw Luke, "Brother Luke, you’re back."

Florence Fuller silently walked around the two of them and went inside.

Grace Linney was playing with a dog in the living room. Florence Fuller came in and greeted everyone.

Old Mr. Gardiner wasn’t in the living room at the moment. Grace Linney began putting on airs like a mother-in-law: "Why are you only back now?"

"I had some things to take care of."

The servant carried in bags and bundles of bags.

Grace Linney let out a cold laugh, insinuating, "So this is your some things to take care of."

"These are Luke Gardiner’s."

A pile of things, Grace Linney didn’t believe it for a second, even blocking the servant to pull out two items to check, clearly men’s styles.

Luke Gardiner happened to walk in and saw her holding the clothes, "Mom, what are you doing?"

Grace Linney smiled, "Oh... I was just looking at these clothes of yours, they look quite nice."

"Really." Luke Gardiner walked over and deliberately sat down close to Florence Fuller, "From Florence’s company."

"The designs are really nice." Grace Linney smiled in a seemingly kind manner. Florence Fuller couldn’t be bothered to look at her fake face and silently moved a bit, creating distance between herself and Luke Gardiner.

At the dinner table, Old Mr. Gardiner brought up Eleanor Sussex’s marriage.

Eleanor Sussex was the daughter of Grace Linney’s close friend. Unfortunately, years ago, her family suffered a series of misfortunes, including bankruptcy and imprisonment, and her friend gave her daughter to Grace Linney before committing suicide.

Grace Linney, who had no daughter, raised Eleanor Sussex almost like her own. She had always wanted Eleanor to marry her son, but then Florence Fuller unexpectedly came into the picture, dashing that hope completely.

Luke Gardiner’s father, Matthew Gardiner, spoke up, "I’ve scouted out several good families, about Eleanor’s age. After dinner, Eleanor, you should take a look at the photos."

Eleanor looked at Luke Gardiner and anxiously grabbed Grace Linney’s arm, shaking it. In this family, she feared Old Mr. Gardiner the most and always dared not speak much at the dinner table.

Grace Linney patted her arm and looked at Matthew Gardiner, "Eleanor is still young, and besides, in such an important matter as marriage, Eleanor should marry someone she likes."

Old Mr. Gardiner let out a cold snort.

Matthew Gardiner looked at Grace Linney, "Like? Who in this family got to marry someone they liked?"

Grace Linney’s face stiffened, and Florence Fuller quietly drank her soup.

Matthew Gardiner and Grace Linney’s marriage was also a business arrangement, and the two had been living separately for years, with their relationship always being lukewarm.

Eleanor Sussex enjoyed the privileges given by the Gardiner Family as she grew up, and Matthew Gardiner expected her to contribute to the Gardiner Family.

The dinner table fell silent.

The meal ended in a prolonged silence.

Florence Fuller originally had made an excuse to leave, but Old Mr. Gardiner’s attitude was firm, not allowing it. She had no choice but to stay.

Luke Gardiner and his father went to the study to see Old Mr. Gardiner. Grace Linney was downstairs comforting Eleanor Sussex, and Florence Fuller didn’t want to stay down there either, so she picked up a book and sat on the couch on the second floor.

She couldn’t really focus on the book, and as she stared at it, she inexplicably drifted off into a daze. A crashing sound suddenly pulled her thoughts back, and she turned her head, frowning, to see Eleanor looking at her angrily.

"Are you satisfied now?" Eleanor walked up to her, glaring, "Now I’m being forced to marry off, are you satisfied?"

Florence Fuller was very annoyed, "Are you nuts!"

Trying to use her as a punching bag.

"You went to stay at the farm with Old Mr. Gardiner for a week, and when you came back, he wanted to marry me off. Was it because of something you said?" Eleanor accused.

Florence Fuller stood up, her expression calm and her gaze cold, "It has nothing to do with me!"

"Denial." Eleanor gritted her teeth, "You knew I liked Brother Luke, so you did this out of spite."

"Who do you think you are for me to waste my time on?" Florence Fuller retorted sarcastically, "You’re always tagging along behind Luke, no wonder Old Mr. Gardiner finds you annoying."

"You... you..." Eleanor’s eyes started to well up, about to cry, "You took him from me, took my place."

"Ridiculous!" Florence Fuller was speechless.

"All because of you, if you hadn’t appeared, I would’ve married him."

Florence Fuller rolled her eyes, yanking Eleanor by the arm and dragging her outside.

"What are you doing!" Eleanor struggled.

"Let’s go find Old Mr. Gardiner and sort this out today since everyone’s here. I’ll say I want a divorce to make room for you, and you say you want to marry Luke Gardiner."

Eleanor got scared and clung to the corner of the sofa, "No no no, I won’t go."

"Go on." Florence Fuller tugged at her, "You always say I’m taking your place? Yelling at me is useless; it’s Old Mr. Gardiner and Dad you need to talk to."

"No, I won’t go." Eleanor held onto the sofa tightly, "I was talking nonsense."

Deep down, she understood that what happened had nothing to do with Florence Fuller. Even if Florence Fuller hadn’t appeared, another woman would have married in.

She just wanted to take her anger out on Florence.

"Eleanor Sussex!" Florence Fuller threw off her hand, "Do you think I’m easy to bully?"

Eleanor didn’t say anything.

"I’m usually quite tolerant, but my limits for tolerance are different every time. Do you know I have an older sister?"

Eleanor looked at her.

Florence Fuller leaned closer, revealing a sweet smile, "Maybe I was too tolerant with her back then. When she lost my things, I beat her up. She stayed in the hospital for over two months, almost with a scar on her forehead. But after that, the way she looked at me, she seemed a bit scared."

Listening to her words and seeing the sweet smile on her face now, Eleanor inexplicably shivered.

She got the creeps inside; this woman might be crazy.

"You have no right to throw a tantrum at me. If you want to marry Luke Gardiner, go to Old Mr. Gardiner to push for our divorce. As long as I see a divorce agreement, I’ll sign it immediately, not a moment’s delay."

Eleanor lowered her head. How could she dare to?

"But you don’t dare." Florence Fuller voiced her thoughts, adding a warning, "If you act up in front of me again, I’ll really teach you a lesson."

The figure in front of her turned and left. Only then did Eleanor look up, watching Florence Fuller’s departing back with deep resentment.

Just as Florence Fuller left, Luke Gardiner came upstairs, bumping directly into Eleanor. He asked, "Where’s your sister-in-law?"

She put on a sorrowful face, "She went back to her room."
