Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Forcing the Unwilling

Wei Shuqian merely gazed upon Wen Jiao’s vivid and strikingly close visage; a fleeting obsession flashed through his eyes, followed by a deeper darkness. He said, "I am sick; that’s why I’ve fallen for someone as heartless as you."

Tears in Wen Jiao’s eyes slipped down as Wei Shuqian spoke.

Her eyelids burned, her voice quivered, she said, "That’s right, Wei Shuqian, I’m heartless."

Bian Yue and Shen Jinci had been sitting downstairs for some time when they finally saw Wei Shuqian descend the stairs.

Bian Yue stood up, unable to hide the tension on her face, glanced at Wei Shuqian, then hurried upstairs.

She was going up to see Wen Jiao.

Wei Shuqian thought, it was strange indeed, Wen Jiao was such a heartless person, what exactly did Bian Yue like about her?

With Bian Yue gone, Wei Shuqian sat down on the couch opposite to Shen Jinci, legs crossed and posture relaxed like Shen Jinci.

One dressed in black and one in white, one brimming with sharp edges, the other subdued and indifferent, making it impossible for onlookers to guess their thoughts.

Though such mismatched people, sitting together, they strangely complemented each other.

Shen Jinci spoke up, his voice calm, "Have you made things clear with Wen Jiao?"

"Mhm," Wei Shuqian chuckled, flicked his lighter, lit up a cigarette in his hand, and, just holding it between his fingers without actually smoking, he slowly said, "Anyway, things have come to this. Since I’ve returned from overseas, I never intended to let her go."

Wisps of smoke curled into the air, and Shen Jinci remained noncommittal.

Wei Shuqian gave a light laugh, his gaze fixed on Shen Jinci, "Third brother, what about you?"

"What about me?"

"How did Bian Yue agree to marry you?" Wei Shuqian said, "The Bian family’s little princess, cherished dearly by Li Sihe for so many years, and she just married you so simply?"

"Do you think it should have been more complicated?" Shen Jinci retorted.

Wei Shuqian said, "At least, it should have taken some scheming, right?"

"It did take a lot of effort, but I’m not the same as you."

"How’s it different?" Wei Shuqian raised an eyebrow, only with Shen Jinci could he feel so relaxed, and he said, "Are you trying to say it’s because you’re a Shen?"

"That’s not it."

Wei Shuqian’s demeanor cooled slightly, his slender fingers paused, and cigarette ash fell into the ashtray, "Then what is it?"

"It’s that I don’t force things."

Wei Shuqian understood the undertones in Shen Jinci’s words.

He curved his lips, speaking slowly, "Do you think I shouldn’t stubbornly pursue Wen Jiao?"

"You yourself said it, it is stubborn. You know what’s best in your heart, and it’s best not to do it."

"’Best not to do’ doesn’t mean ’cannot do.’" Wei Shuqian’s expression became utterly indifferent, he stated, "I’m set on doing it."

The two men actually hadn’t seen each other for many years, and toward Shen Jinci’s past, Wei Shuqian was one of the few who knew a bit.

Even so, the man before him remained enigmatic.

"When I was overseas and heard you got married, out of curiosity I looked at Bian Yue’s photo," Wei Shuqian said, "Third brother, I’ve seen her photo, in your wallet."

In the dark night of a foreign land, the icy, towering buildings overlooked the glamorous hustle and bustle of the business district.

Wei Shuqian, chomping on a cigar, watched Shen Jinci turn his back to him, gazing at the photograph he kept close in his wallet.

At that time, curious, Wei Shuqian inquired, "Bian Yue? Third brother, is she the one you’re fond of?"

He had been with Wen Jiao before, and so, had seen Bian Yue a few times.

However, Wen Jiao never wanted to introduce her friends to him, so, to Wei Shuqian, Bian Yue was an utter stranger.

"Bian Yue is Li Sihe’s fiancée, if I remember correctly... they were very much in love." Wei Shuqian made a pained tsk sound, and said, "Third brother, fancy someone else, these upper-class ladies have hearts of stone."

The fact proved that Bian Yue was soft-hearted.

It was Wen Jiao who was ruthless.

Wei Shuqian’s eyes revealed self-mockery. He took a deep drag of his cigarette, snuffed it out, and spoke in a hoarse voice, "I’ve thought it through clearly; no matter the cost, I will make Wen Jiao marry me."

"Shuqian, a kind word of warning for you—don’t go too far."

Wei Shuqian’s expression showed a moment of stupor, then returned to indifference. He looked at Shen Jinci and asked indifferently, "Third brother, what exactly is considered ’too far’?"

He reached this point in life by adhering to the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest. Had he not been ’too far,’ he would have been devoured without a trace left behind.

The clean and respectable hypocrisy is the knocking brick to the high society.

But in this lifetime, he already detested the so-called respectability and superficiality; what he wanted to keep, he kept; what he didn’t, he destroyed—it was that simple.

What he wanted, he obtained; what he didn’t want, he ruined.

He didn’t wish to destroy Wen Jiao just yet.

Bian Yue stayed with Wen Jiao until late at night before returning to her bedroom, struggling with drowsiness.

This entire day was tumultuous; first the hospital, then Wen Jiao, and only now had it finally come to an end.

So when Bian Yue saw Shen Jinci sitting at the edge of her bed, it was inevitable that she was taken aback.

"Shen Jinci..." She called out his name in surprise, quite unexpectedly, "How come you’re here?"

"I thought you must be very tired after running around all day, so I came over to help you knead your shoulders."

Shen Jinci paused, then said seriously, "I used to live with my grandfather and often massaged him. Yueyue, don’t overthink it."

Bian Yue was indeed tired.

At that moment, hearing Shen Jinci say so, the soreness in her body began to surge.

Bian Yue still felt somewhat embarrassed, "Is this... Would this be too troublesome for you?"

"If you mean the trouble of massaging one’s own wife, I don’t think that’s troublesome; it’s my honor."

Shen Jinci gently pulled Bian Yue’s hand, having her sit beside him.

Neither of them spoke, and Shen Jinci was truly just massaging Bian Yue.

But with the atmosphere so quiet, Wen Bianyue couldn’t help but recall the deep kiss in the car on the way back.

Bian Yue clenched her hand into a fist, tightening slightly.

She said, "Shen Jinci, were you jealous today?"

"No."

"Really not?"

"Really not," the man patiently responded to Bian Yue with a gentle voice.

Bian Yue’s heart tightened, she frowned, looking puzzledly at Shen Jinci, "Then why did you in the car..."

She trailed off, her force diminishing.

Shen Jinci knew what Bian Yue wanted to say, "Are you trying to ask, if I wasn’t jealous, why did I kiss you?"

Bian Yue was hit the nail on the head, not concealing it but nodding openly, questioning back, "That’s right, Shen Jinci, if you weren’t jealous, then why did you kiss me?"

The man’s lips followed her words, lightly brushing past the edge of her lips, then slightly pulling back.

Breath against breath, Shen Jinci looked at Bian Yue’s panicked and blushing face, "What about now?"

"What... what about now?" Bian Yue’s words fumbled nervously.

Shen Jinci looked at her blushing face nonchalantly, pinched her face, a smile spreading in his eyes, "Now, surely I am not jealous, am I? I just wanted to kiss you, that’s all."
