Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The One He Favors

"I saw the way you looked this morning, and I knew you can’t keep your composure."

Shen Jinci glanced at Bian Yue with a light flicker in his eyes and a sparse tone, "Had I come a bit later, you wouldn’t have gotten away with just a slap."

Bian Yue nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, yes, if it wasn’t for Mr. Shen, my fortune would be hard to predict by now!"

She was obviously humoring him, and Shen Jinci said no more, only adding: "I’ll be visiting a temple later, come with me."

After speaking, he covered his fist and coughed lowly.

Bian Yue nervously leaned in to see Shen Jinci’s palm clean.

"What?" Shen Jinci knew what Bian Yue was looking at. His smile sparse, "Hoping I’d die?"

Bian Yue wasn’t embarrassed when asked in such a manner, she withdrew her gaze, sincerely concerned, "I care about you. You vomited blood at the hotel today; I feared you had contracted some terminal illness and were about to depart this world."

Kang Yu, sitting in front, was startled upon hearing this and looked at Bian Yue through the rearview mirror, admiring Miss Bian’s boldness in speaking to Mr. Shen in such a way.

But seeing Mr. Shen’s reaction, it seemed he didn’t mind, and even appeared to be... enjoying it?

Kang Yu didn’t dare look any longer, secretly criticizing himself for misjudging.

Ling’an Temple wasn’t far from the Li Family, it was the rainy season, and the large vermilion gate was tightly closed. The towering ancient trees at the entrance were a deep green under the washing rains.

Bian Yue curiously looked to Shen Jinci, "The temple seems closed today, wouldn’t it be wrong for us to go in?"

The Maybach stopped amidst the patter of rain; Kang Yu held an umbrella and opened the car door for Shen Jinci.

Bian Yue, puzzled, still rose to follow.

The temple was indeed so quiet that not a soul was present.

Shen Jinci asked Bian Yue if she believed in Buddha, and if she wanted to go in and pray for wealth.

Bian Yue replied, "I’ve never believed in these things since I was a kid. Mr. Shen, if there really are gods and Buddha, then given my mother’s devotion, right now I should be the Bian Family young mistress with both parents by my side."

She spoke these words with a deliberately light tone, as if she completely didn’t care, but the sourness buried deep within couldn’t help but surge forward.

Shen Jinci lowered his eyes without a ripple, and each holding an umbrella, separated by a distance, he said, "Then take a stroll around. I will be done soon."

After saying that, he coughed again.

Bian Yue wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but Shen Jinci’s lips seemed tinged with traces of blood.

Shen Jinci had turned away.

Raindrops pounded on the umbrella, creating a dull, heavy sound, quickening soon after.

Through the misty rain, Bian Yue watched Shen Jinci’s retreating figure.

It exuded alienation and indifference, seemingly unapproachable.

He resembled a deity; even if placed within the temple for worship, it wouldn’t feel out of place.

Kang Yu stepped next to Bian Yue, saying in a low voice, "Mr. Shen came to pay respects to his late father and mother."

Bian Yue’s eyes trembled with shock, her surprise unable to be concealed, her hand gripping the umbrella tightened.

Shen Jinci had been only 10 years old when his parents died, and such old news, no matter how sensational at the time, had long been forgotten by people.

Shen Jinci himself was only 17 that year.

Younger than when she lost both her own parents.

Bian Yue would never forget the sight inside the mourning hall: the pious-looking elders revealing their ferocious fangs, all for a share of the benefits in her hands.

Without Li Sihe, given Bian Yue’s naivete at the time, she would have certainly been devoured alive by the Bian Family.

Bian Yue dared not think how Shen Jinci, amidst the Shen Family’s wolves, had managed to protect himself and ascend to his current position.

He steps on a price unimaginable to outsiders, where rivers of blood flow.

Just as Shen Jinci was about to enter the temple, he heard footsteps behind him.

Bian Yue ran up to him, panting, and said: "It’s not convenient for me to go in, so I’ll wait for you outside. Shen Jinci, don’t be too sad."

As she spoke, her face was as enchanting as a full moon, her almond eyes clear, her youth unbeatable.

Sad?

The temple’s main hall doors were tightly closed, the man leaned against the door, the tip of his cigarette flickering. He gazed upon the solemn treasure-like image in front of him, his breath filled with the scent of sandalwood.

The two blackened wood boxes containing ashes, delicately carved with intricate mandala patterns, were placed conspicuously on the table before the Buddha.

Shen Jinci’s slender fingers extinguished the cigarette, his voice chilly and casual: "Tell them, the person outside the door is someone I fancy, she doesn’t believe in Buddha, but please bless her to achieve what she desires."

His words dissipated in the room, unheard by anyone else.

When Shen Jinci pushed the door open to leave, Bian Yue squatted under the eaves, a black umbrella completely enveloping her, her silhouette obscured.

"What are you squatting there looking at?" Shen Jinci’s throat felt itchy, and he coughed lightly twice.

Bian Yue was just daydreaming; hearing Shen Jinci’s voice, she lifted the umbrella nervously and looked at him, saying, "Shen Jinci, you’ve got... Will you die?"

The light rain grew heavier; Shen Jinci watched Bian Yue’s clear eyes, his heartstrings tugged, invoking pain. His gaze softened unknowingly, with a hint of a smile: "If I died, would Miss Bian be sad?"

Without responding, Bian Yue just looked at the man’s proud and inscrutable expression, like the unfathomable depths of the ocean.

Bian Yue understood very clearly that Shen Jinci was not someone she could provoke or control.

He was very dangerous.

Beneath his indifferent and noble façade, indifferent to all things, lay a cunning mind that she could not fathom.

Bian Yue cherished her life.

So she showed her reverence, and said softly: "Mr. Shen, please take me home."

Shen Jinci’s smile did not fade, with the same light tone, he said: "Alright."

In a discreet corner, a professional reporter wearing a duckbill cap, her face flushed with excitement, pressed the shutter button.

All the recent accumulation; the material is plentiful! The headline is in sight! A quick rise to fame!

After Shen Jinci and Bian Yue left, the reporter eagerly dialed Shen Shiniang’s number, "Chairman Shen! Thank you for the scoop! Rest assured, I will give you a big headline!"

Shen Shiniang on the other end of the phone sneered and hung up. Standing in the courtyard, he watched the trickling rain.

Shen Jinci was ruthless, showing no respect to his well-seasoned seniors, so they couldn’t blame him for his venomous tactics.

All procedures were in place.

Shen Shiniang would never forget the humiliation when Shen Jinci, within Lixing Group, forced him to relinquish actual control.

"Shen Jinci, you’ve just returned to the country and stock prices are trembling in the red. Let’s see how you explain this!"

Shen Shiniang held a cigar between his fingertips, took a deep inhale, his expression gloomy: "But you need not explain, I’ll soon send you off to join your parents!"

Rainy season in Gang City, the rain pours down endlessly.

In the days following her farewell to Shen Jinci, Bian Yue huddled in Wen Jiao’s house, never going out again.

She recalled everything that had happened that day at the Li Family, Tang Yuwei, whom she viewed as family, spewing venomous words at her, Li Sihe embracing another woman in front of her eyes. She couldn’t return to the Li Family anymore.

Her thoughts were in disarray, so she remained silent, watching the rain outside the window.

Until Wen Jiao burst in with a newspaper.

Being unaware of Bian Yue’s troubles, Jiao gossiped excitedly as she ran in: "Bian Yue! Shen Jinci is about to die! Really, it’s imminent!"

Bian Yue, startled, looked helplessly at Wen Jiao, "Shen Jinci is actually a decent person. When did he offend you? Why would you curse him like this?"
