Chapter 100: Chapter 100: As Everyone Knows

If something you never dared to imagine is suddenly laid out before you, within easy reach, then it must provoke fanciful thoughts.

Shen Shan truly was cunning and calculating; he had a perfect grasp on what mattered to him.

He only spent an hour contemplating the benefits of becoming Shen Jinci.

The facts proved that, setting aside personal likes and dislikes and looking solely at the interests, this was indeed a no-lose deal.

He, who was originally a discarded chess piece, had now transformed into the future spokesperson of the Shen Family.

So he agreed.

Father and son reached an understanding, deep into the night.

Shen Shan’s smile revealed satisfaction as he watched his son’s indifferent and haughty face under the light, showing a knowing smile, "Your brother is cultured and amiable, but in terms of personality alone, you are more suited to be the Patriarch of the Shen Family than he is."

"Let’s skip the flattery," he said with an annoyed expression, coldly continuing, "I agree to become Shen Jinci, but your life is still..."

"It’s yours," Shen Shan interrupted him calmly and composedly, the aging man still as impeccable and collected as he spoke, "My life is yours."

Having said that, he pulled the trigger.

Shen Jinci couldn’t believe that Shen Shan, a man so fond of life, would choose death.

Yet Shen Shan committed suicide right in front of him.

Shen Shan’s body lay on the ground, casting a shadow in the light; he died in a dark place.

While above Shen Jinci’s head, the daylight-like light sculpted his noble and icy visage into something dreamy and illusory.

—The newly born Shen Jinci, the deceased Shen Shan.

Shen Jinci sat still, looking at Shen Shan’s frail body due to rapid blood loss.

His eyes were tightly shut, breath already gone.

He just died in front of himself.

Shen Jinci was accustomed to life and death; he never felt that anyone’s life was different.

It was nothing more than the rupture of blood vessels, the cessation of the heart’s function.

Death was never a pretty sight.

Even someone like Shen Jinci was actually averse to the gore.

So for a long time, he couldn’t move at all.

The butler had known everything all along, calmly pushed open the door, and without any panic regarded everything before him, saying, "The master has passed away from a heart attack. I will hold a press conference right away to announce this."

Listening to the butler’s words, Shen Jinci sneered coldly, "Is this also his wish?"

"The master wishes that from now on, the Shen Family will listen to you."

"Isn’t he afraid that I will ruin the entire Shen Family?" Shen Jinci’s voice was cold, "He should know that I have no affection for this place."

"You’re a smart man, you should know what the identity of the Shen Family Patriarch can bring you. Sometimes, acting on a moment’s passion is meaningless, and would only lead you back into darkness. Now a new life lies before you, within easy grasp."

After speaking, the butler showed a respectful smile towards Shen Jinci, "The smell of blood is too strong. Mr. Shen, please go and rest. Leave everything here to us."

That night, the Shen Family quietly buried two people.

Shen Shan, and the real Shen Jinci.

The ashes of the two, as well as their mother who had passed away during childbirth many years ago, were all placed in Ling’an Temple.

The butler looked at Shen Jinci, whose eyebrows showed indifference, and only inquired with gentle respect, "Can Mr. Shen visit Ling’an Temple for the annual memorial?"

Shen Jinci chuckled and agreed.

And just like that, he became the authoritative figure of the Shen Family.

The ways of the world are truly unpredictable; now he is the widely recognized Shen Jinci. No one has suspected that beneath the same visage, there lies an entirely different soul.

He was never destined to be a gentleman of perfect integrity; those who have struggled to survive under the law of the jungle, even now when everything has settled down, still find it hard to let their guard down.

Yet, he still feels fortunate that he shares the same face as Shen Jinci, and because of this, right now, his Little Yue can lay beside his pillow.

Shen Jinci gently smoothed Bian Yue’s stray hairs at her temples, his gaze deep and tender as he stared at her, his eyes and brows exuding indescribable affection.

After a while, he kissed her forehead lightly and whispered, "Goodnight, Moon Princess."

She is unaware of the long and perilous journey he undertook to have her by his side after so many difficulties...

Given that, how could he possibly let go easily...

When Bian Yue woke up, it was still dark before dawn.

She should have been exhausted, considering all that had happened in such a short time; she should need a good rest.

But inexplicably, she awoke from her dream.

Shen Jinci was sleeping beside her, fully clothed and peaceful in slumber.

With his eyes closed in sleep, his aura seemed much gentler, less sharp and ruthless, replaced by a tender curvature.

His long lashes rested gently over his serene sleeping face, strikingly beautiful.

Bian Yue watched him for a while, her hand tracing the contours of his eyebrows and eyes before she stealthily got out of bed.

Remembering that Wen Jiao was emotionally unstable before sleep, Bian Yue went back to check on her, finding her sleeping soundly, deep in slumber.

Only then did Bian Yue feel at ease and left Wen Jiao’s room.

Unbeknownst to her, Shen Jinci had already awoken; hence, as soon as the door to Wen Jiao’s room closed, she fell into an embrace.

Bian Yue’s hand tightened around the doorknob, startled and uncertain: "Shen Jinci? You’re awake?"

"Mhm, it’s late, Yueyue, why are you out here alone?" His voice sounded husky and tired, yet inexplicably enticing as he held Bian Yue tightly, softly saying, "I was worried about you, so I came to look."

Bian Yue said it was nothing, telling Shen Jinci that they were at home, and she wouldn’t come to harm.

Perhaps the depth of the night made it possible for those surging and suppressed emotions to be vented.

In an angle where Bian Yue could not see, Shen Jinci’s gaze softened, warming up inch by inch, and he said, "Yueyue, I just had a dream about you."

Bian Yue’s heart fluttered, her voice gentle, "What did you dream about?"

Shen Jinci replied, "I dreamed of you at 18, walking out of Xiangjiang Girls’ High School, wearing a beautiful dress."

Bian Yue, a bit proud, lifted her face slightly, her demeanor haughty as she said, "I have so many beautiful dresses, not just one."

"I know," Shen Jinci paused, laughter in his tone, and added, "Yueyue looks good in anything."

Bian Yue seemed to ponder this, then said excitedly after a moment, "Shen Jinci, when I was 18, you were 24, what were you doing then?"

"Do you want to know?"

"Yes, I do."

"Why?" Shen Jinci asked softly, casually stroking Bian Yue’s hair ends, his demeanor gentle, almost coaxing, "Why do you want to know?"

Bian Yue was taken aback, without a second thought responding, "I just want to know, there doesn’t have to be a reason, does there?"

"Yueyue," he sighed, calling her name with deep, heartfelt emphasis. "You make me feel like you really care about me."
