Chapter 523: Chapter 514: Going Out Late at Night
Fang Yao was still feeling a little dizzy by the time she got off work.
The assistants who were hired by Shao Entertainment at the same time as her were still waiting to be assigned to a celebrity, or to be chosen by one.
But she had already been personally selected by an artist the company was planning to heavily promote to be their assistant.
It was unbelievably smooth.
It was already evening when she left the company. She watched Jiang Lingxi get into a black business car parked on the side of the road, then jogged over to the parking spot for electric bikes. She pulled out her newly bought pink electric scooter, put on her helmet, and planned to head to the supermarket to buy some of her favorite ingredients to reward herself at home.
In the black business car.
Jiang Lingxi looked at Changning, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, there to pick her up. "Have you and Yun Yi settled in?"
"Don’t worry, Sister Xi, we’ve settled in. We’re staying in the apartment arranged by Mister, and it’s pretty close to where you are." Changning said as she started the car, "Where to now, Sister Xi?"
Jiang Lingxi leaned her head against the headrest, "Home."
She just wanted to be alone right now.
Changning glanced at the rear-view mirror inside the car, "Sister Xi, you must be tired. It’s been a while since you were back; I fear there’s nothing to eat at home. Do you want to have dinner before going back?"
"A little, but I don’t feel like eating right now."
Changning fell silent and just drove quietly.
Half an hour later, the business car stopped in the underground parking lot.
As soon as the car stopped, Jiang Lingxi woke up from her nap, unbuckled her seatbelt and looked at Changning, who was about to speak, "Thank you for all your hard work. I don’t have much going on for a while, so you and Yun Yi should take a good rest too. I’m heading up; you should head back, drive safely."
Changning had to swallow her words, "Sister Xi, you have a good rest too."
"Hmm."
Watching Jiang Lingxi get into the elevator, Changning hesitated for a moment before starting the car, then pulled out her phone and sent a message.
[Mister, Sister Xi looks a bit tired and didn’t have dinner, just went straight back.]
Shen Yunqing paused in his actions after reading the message.
After a while, he replied: [Okay, I got it. You head back first.]

The house that hadn’t been lived in for several months, even with housekeeping occasionally coming by to clean, still had an indescribable stillness.
Jiang Lingxi placed her phone on the coffee table to charge, wandered through all the rooms to ensure they felt inhabited again, and then went to the master bedroom for a shower.
Afterwards, she made her bed, lay down, and quickly drifted into sleep.
When she awoke, it was deep into the night.
Instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, she got up, changed into some inconspicuous clothes, and quickly put on some makeup before heading out. The makeup masked her identity, ensuring no one would recognize her as Jiang Lingxi unless they were face-to-face.
She grabbed her fully charged phone and stepped out of the house.
Not doing much else, she walked slowly along the road after leaving her neighborhood.
This area was bustling; the nearby malls were open 24/7, and even at this hour, there were plenty of people around, with the constant sound of chatter and car horns.
Not until she aimlessly reached a riverside did the surroundings finally quiet down a bit. She chose a bench under a street lamp by the river, checked it for dust, and sat down.
She remained still, listening to the rushing water, occasionally noting the sound of fish jumping out of the water.
A homeless man dragging a patched-up sack was about to walk past the bench when he noticed someone sitting there. Curious, he paused.
A normal person would turn their head to check upon hearing footsteps behind them, especially late at night, either out of caution or curiosity.
But Jiang Lingxi couldn’t be bothered and pretended not to hear.
The homeless man cautiously walked to the other side of the bench and sat down, turning to look at her.
This time, his eyes met cold, sharp ones under the dim yellow light, as if they could cut through skin.
He recoiled instinctively and almost fell to the ground if he hadn’t grabbed the back of the bench quickly.
"I-I saw you weren’t moving, thought you were asleep. In this weather, sleeping outside would leave you frozen by morning!"
"I’m not asleep, not tired."
The homeless man was taken aback by her voice again.
He’d initially assumed it was a man because of her black attire and sharp eyes.
He didn’t expect her to be a young woman, sounding so young.
"Why are you out here in the middle of the night, not home sleeping? Did you have a fight and run away? This place is dangerous, you should hurry back!"
Jiang Lingxi didn’t expect the man to be kind-hearted. She had to suppress her annoyance and said, "Thank you for your concern."
The homeless man, an expert at reading faces, could tell her vibe, even if her expression was hidden under the hat. It was an aura that said he should shut up and stay quiet.
He scratched his nose, sat for a little longer, then quietly got up and left with his sack.
About a hundred meters away, he saw an empty bottle discarded under a tree and hurried to pick it up. As he stood up, he noticed something wasn’t quite right.
Why is there a shadow?
Following the shadow, he finally saw someone standing silently next to a bush behind the tree—a tall, slim figure in a black coat. If he hadn’t bent down to pick up the bottle, he might have passed by without noticing.
He ran away quickly, but couldn’t resist looking back.
The figure remained standing quietly, not moving an inch.
"What’s going on tonight? Why is everyone I run into so weird?" he muttered as he walked away.
But not even half an hour later, he came rushing back, panic-stricken, without his sack that he had been holding.
Several drunken men covered in tattoos were chasing him.
"Hey, scrap collector, stop for me!"
Jiang Lingxi’s originally peaceful moment was instantly disturbed.
She got up, stomped her feet, and turned towards the source of the noise.
The homeless man, realizing he had inadvertently run back to where the young lady was after panicking, thought he couldn’t get her involved as she was innocent here.
He mentally chastised himself but knew his options were limited without jumping into the river—which he couldn’t do because he couldn’t swim!
He could only shout, "Run!"
Unfortunately, she didn’t move, attracting the attention of the drunken men.
"So this is why you ran here, because there’s an accomplice."
"Not an accomplice, not an accomplice, I don’t even know her."
"Then why are you telling her to run? You’ve got guts! What’s with the look? Brothers, let’s beat the hell out of him!"
Seeing that the guys chasing him were closing in on the girl by the bench, the homeless man felt a pang of worry and gritted his teeth to stop running, "I’m the one who upset you; I won’t run. If you’re going to beat someone, beat me, don’t bully—others!"
He almost said ’little girl,’ but changed his words just in time.
But it was no use.
"No, we’ll beat both."
Jiang Lingxi coldly watched the three drunken men approach her, rolled up her sleeves, and shrugged her shoulders to warm up.
She was displeased, but thankfully the punching bags came straight to her!
