Chapter 277: Chapter 277: The Su Siblings Make a Stir in the Imperial City
"Sis, sis, wake up, we’re in the Imperial City!"
Su Yi slowly awoke as her arm was gently patted several times, and she opened her eyes to see that the passengers in the carriage had already started moving.
The bus hadn’t come to a complete stop yet, but everyone was already eager to grab their luggage and get off.
Su Cheng waited for his sister to move her head off his shoulder, stood up immediately, stretched his already stiff body, and his bones cracked loudly.
He then took down their backpacks from the luggage rack, unzipped them, took out a plastic water bottle, unscrewed the lid, and handed it over.
Su Yi took the water bottle, drank a few sips while saving some for later. Su Cheng finished the rest in a few gulps and sighed in relief, "We’ve finally arrived."
Su Yi brushed aside her slightly sweaty bangs and couldn’t help but smile at Su Cheng’s weary expression.
This kid always had boundless energy; it was her first time seeing her brother look so tired.
However, the journey indeed wasn’t easy.
Nearly three days and nights of travel, sitting in this cramped seat in the enclosed carriage, and having to wait for rest stops to use the bathroom meant they couldn’t even drink much water on the way.
They almost got on the wrong bus during a transfer; if Su Yi hadn’t sensed something was off and asked the driver in time before the bus started, they would have been going back the way they came.
"Yeah, we’ve finally arrived!"
While they were talking, the bus finally stopped completely.
The doors opened, and the passengers quickly began to disembark.
The siblings followed the crowd off the bus, and without the air conditioning of the carriage, the hot July weather of the Imperial City hit them instantly.
"This Imperial City is much hotter than our place!"
Su Yi squinted, glanced up at the glaring sun, and said, "Indeed. Go get the luggage quickly."
Soon, Su Cheng had another colorful woven bag with two patches in his hand.
"Sis, here’s your phone."
The phone was kept with Su Cheng for the entire trip as border towns are less safe than the inland, and stealing phones is common, so it was safer with Su Cheng than with Su Yi.
But now they were in the safest Imperial City in the country, so they didn’t have to worry about that anymore.
His sister needed the phone more now.
To save battery, the phone was kept off during the trip. Su Yi turned it on after receiving it, "There’s a message!"
Seeing her about to read it under the blazing sun, Su Cheng quickly tugged on her arm, "It’s too sunny here with the cars, let’s read it over there."
Three minutes later, the siblings squatted in a shady spot by the wall and finished reading the message.
Su Yi’s face showed relief, and her voice was joyful, "That’s great, the program provides accommodation."
The reason they brought so much luggage was in case they ran out of money for a place to stay and had to make do with finding a bridge or such.
Although they no longer had to worry about accommodation, they were reluctant to throw away the luggage they brought along.
"What are we waiting for then, let’s go, sis." Su Cheng rubbed his stomach, imagining aloud, "It’d be even better if they provided food too!"
"Greedy, be content with having a place to stay." Su Yi said, but as they left the station, she started looking around the stores near the station, "I’m a bit hungry too, let’s buy something to eat before we go."
However, after asking how much a bowl of plain noodles was, the siblings paused their actions as they were about to sit down.
After exchanging glances, "Sorry, sir, we won’t take it."
Leaving the shop, they encountered a middle-aged man, who looked at the siblings and said, "Need a ride?"
"How much to Hongcheng Hotel?"
Hearing their destination, the middle-aged man paused and scanned their clothing and patched woven bag, held up one finger, "Flat rate, one hundred."
The siblings both showed a surprised expression.
Seeing this, the middle-aged man explained patiently, "We’re in the suburbs, and your hotel is in the city center. It’ll take me two to three hours to drive there. A hundred is a very fair price. You won’t find a cheaper offer from other drivers around here."
"How long would it take to walk?"
The middle-aged man left with a complex expression.
Fortunately, before the siblings really committed to walking, they found out there was a bus to the city center from the station for only two yuan per person, much more acceptable than the hundred-yuan taxi fare.
Finally getting off the crowded bus, they looked at the surrounding skyscrapers that reached the clouds, feeling their eyes weren’t enough to take it all in.
They’d seen the Imperial City’s prosperity on television back in their small town, but being there in person left them genuinely awestruck.
"Sis," Su Cheng finally tore his gaze away, "Can you still tell east from west?"
Su Yi: "..."
Though she didn’t want to admit it, she really couldn’t tell directions at the moment.
Su Cheng patted his chest, volunteering, "Sis, wait here. I’ll go ask for directions."
After settling their bags and sister on a clean resting bench by the roadside, Su Cheng took their phone, looked around, took a deep breath, and approached a teenager who seemed to be around his age.
Somewhat awkwardly, he said ’hello’ and when the boy stopped to look at him, "Do you know how to get to Hongcheng Hotel?"
"Hongcheng Hotel?" The boy who was stopped repeated instinctively, looked up and down at the person in front of him.
With a faded, frayed gray T-shirt, noticeably short pants, and an uncommon pair of canvas shoes, he didn’t look like someone who could stay at a four-star hotel.
"Are you sure it’s Hongcheng Hotel you want to go to?"
Su Cheng was already used to such stares, which is why he let his sister rest while he volunteered to ask for directions. After all, he was thick-skinned.
"Yes, do you know how to get there?"
"I do. You know what, I’m heading nearby anyway, I’ll just take you there."
"Thanks, wait a moment, I’ll get my sister."
The boy stood where he was and watched the siblings walk back. He looked again at the woven bag they were carrying, opened his mouth but said nothing, and led them to a black sedan parked by the roadside.
When the car door opened, a cool breeze and a light fragrance wafted out. Su Cheng looked dumbfoundedly at the boy signaling them to get in.
"Perhaps you should draw us a map, and we’ll find our way there."
They hadn’t been able to shower for three days, so they felt embarrassed to sit in such a clean and expensive car.
"The roads get more complex and winding the closer you get to the city. One wrong turn, and you could easily get lost. Are you sure you want to find your way there by yourselves? Enough stalling, get in. I rarely feel like doing a good deed."
The boy’s face hardened as he noticed their hesitation, "Uncle Lin, help them put the luggage in the trunk!"
"Yes, young master."
The siblings climbed into the car nervously and sat rigidly with their hands on their knees, motionless.
The car doors closed, shutting out the heat, and the vehicle smoothly merged into traffic.
The inside of the car was silent until two phone ringtone sounds rang out almost simultaneously.
Su Yi opened her phone and saw a new message from the program crew, "Dear Teacher Su, please arrive at Room 301, 3rd floor, Imperial City TV Station before 6 PM. ’Inheritance’ Program Team."
Su Cheng turned his head and asked in a whisper, "Sis, another message from the program crew?"
"Yes," Su Yi whispered back, "They want us to meet before 6 PM. It seems there’s some arrangement. But it’s fine, we should have enough time."
After their quiet exchange, they looked up to meet the eyes of the person sitting in the front passenger seat.
The teenager looked shocked, "You’re not going to ’Inheritance’ as well, are you?"
"As well?" Su Yi was taken aback, then saw the boy wave his phone, displaying a message similar to hers but with the name ’Shen’ instead of ’Su.’
"Uh, my name is Shen Huchen."
"I’m Su Yi, and this is my brother, Su Cheng."
