Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Ironically, I’m One Who Loves But Cannot Have
During those countless sleepless nights, it was his touch through the blankets that calmed her, reassuring her enough to sleep, soothing her heavy heart worried about the high school exams and the impending separation from her close friends.
Even on the night before the exams, he stopped her from studying and took Chloe Grant to see, for the first and only time in her life, a spectacular display of fireflies that she would never forget.
Ordinarily, with Chloe Grant’s eyesight, there was no way she could have hoped to see the fireflies.
But Lucas Morgan had somehow found special glasses for her that allowed her to see.
That day was, in fact, the first time Chloe Grant had ever seen... the night.
She looked up, her smile radiant, and he was right there beside her.
It was one of the most unforgettable scenes in Chloe Grant’s lifetime.
Those memories, even now, remain so vivid that Chloe Grant can recall every detail.
She lowered her eyes in disappointment.
Often, Chloe Grant would wonder, how different things would be without these small details?
If that were the case, her feelings for Lucas Morgan would have been but a slight emotion. Perhaps during those growing years, she would have met a boy who made her heart race, and she would have forgotten any feelings for Lucas Morgan beyond those of a niece toward an uncle.
Or, had he not been there during her most helpless times, then even if he and Lily Grant were together today, she could easily roll her eyes and say to him, "I’ve fallen out with Lily Grant, so be with her if you want. I don’t like it, but I won’t oppose it."
So simple, right?
Yet... things never go as hoped.
"Knock, knock."
The sound of knocking on the door interrupted Chloe Grant’s thoughts, and she was jolted back to reality.
As she touched her face, she was surprised to find tears there.
"Really disappointing."
"Chloe, open the door." It was Lucas Morgan’s voice.
Chloe Grant’s heart shuddered, and when she stood up, her legs felt slightly numb, but she still went to open the door for Lucas Morgan.
"What’s up?"
"Bringing fruit, what else? Move aside a bit."
Lucas Morgan held a fruit platter in one hand, pushed open the door with the other, walked past Chloe Grant into the room, and eventually placed the fruit platter on her table.
"Why are you bringing me fruit?" Chloe Grant asked again.
She didn’t like Lucas Morgan being so considerate of her at all!
"Just eat it when I give it to you. Why all the questions?" Lucas Morgan waved a hand and was about to leave when Chloe Grant suddenly grabbed his arm.
Lucas Morgan was puzzled, "What is it?"
Chloe Grant took a deep breath, then looked up at him, "Mr. Morgan, can we talk?"
"Hmm?"
Lucas Morgan was puzzled, but he stayed.
He grabbed a chair nearby, reversed its direction, and sat down, resting his arms on the backrest.
Chloe Grant lowered her head and sat on the chair opposite.
She didn’t speak first, seemingly gathering her emotions, and Lucas Morgan didn’t rush her.
After a while, Chloe Grant sighed, licked her somewhat dry lips, and said, "I want to ask you, if one day you find out... that the person who always claimed to love you doesn’t love you at all, what would you do?"
She actually wanted to be more direct and say, "If you find out that Lily Grant doesn’t love you at all, what would you do?"
Lucas Morgan listened to Chloe Grant’s words, frowning slightly, his expression rather serious.
Chloe Grant looked at his expression, suddenly feeling a bit uncertain...
Why was he showing that expression?
"Chloe, I’m telling you seriously, I won’t let you date that so-called senior. You’re too young and will be deceived by him!"
"Hmm?"
Chloe Grant was taken aback by Lucas Morgan’s sudden words.
A senior?
What is he talking about?
