Accidental Marriage with the CEO: Unwanted Bride -
Chapter 45: Her heir
Chapter 45: Her heir
On her way back to her room, Eve couldn’t stop crying, tears pouring relentlessly down her cheeks as she walked. Her chest tightened with every step, her emotions a chaotic storm she couldn’t control.
She stumbled upon Roman on the way, and her expression instantly darkened. The sight of him stirred something raw...hatred, bitterness. Not wanting any interaction, she turned her back to leave, but before she could take a step, he called out gently, "Eve."
His voice, soft, concerned, made her pause.
"Don’t call me that. I have told you countless times, don’t use my name, don’t speak to me, don’t even look at me. We are no longer siblings. I made that very clear," she said in an icy tone, her fists clenched tightly at her sides.
"Did he make you cry again?" He asked calmly, unfazed by her hostility.
"Why do you care?!" She snapped, spinning around to face him, her voice breaking. "I hate you, don’t you get that?! Leave me alone! Stop trying to play the brother role in my life!" Tears kept flowing, but she couldn’t stop them. What frustrated her more was how he never gave up, even after ten years of rejection. Even after she had screamed her hatred for him over and over.
"Did he make you cry?" He asked again, his tone unchanged.
She laughed bitterly. "Yes! Is that what you want to hear?!" But instead of responding, he brushed past her and continued walking. Her stomach dropped, and she suddenly realized where he was going.
Panicked, she rushed after him and blocked his path, throwing her arms out. "What are you doing?! I don’t need your help, I am fine!" But he tried to step around her, and she blocked him again, more aggressively this time.
"I said stop!" She shouted. "Haven’t you done enough damage in everyone’s lives? You killed Mum, you killed your best friend’s brother, and almost killed your best friend too! Or are you trying to finish the one life you didn’t take?!" Her voice cracked under the weight of everything she had bottled up, oblivious to whether anyone nearby could hear her outburst.
But her words stopped Roman in his tracks. He stood frozen, staring at her in silence, hesitation in his eyes.
"Why must it be him?" He asked quietly once she calmed.
"When you truly fall in love with someone, you will understand," she replied bitterly. "But you have never loved anyone but yourself, so you never will. All you know how to do is ruin lives. But I won’t let you ruin mine. Stay away from Syres or I will end my own life."
Her words struck hard, cruel as daggers. But Roman didn’t even flinch. He had grown used to her cruelty long ago.
"What if I make your marriage with him work?" He asked, and she scoffed, almost laughing at how absurd he sounded.
"He would hate me even more if he found out you were behind it," she said with a sneer. "Just like I said, you are always trying to ruin my life. Stay out of it."
With that, she brushed past him, not sparing another glance.
Meanwhile, Patricia, who had been searching for Zara, stumbled upon a scene she was never meant to witness. Instinctively, she ducked behind a nearby column, regretting not simply calling Zara instead of wandering around. Now, she had overheard something she shouldn’t have, and worse, it left her even more curious.
She barely knew anything about Roman, but how did he have a sister? The news had only always ever mentioned a brother, one who seemed like he didn’t exist until she met him. Yet here they were, clearly siblings, though their conversation made it obvious they were far from close.
And Syres and Roman...best friends? That revelation shook her. Suddenly, Roman’s odd concern over her relationship with Syres made a strange kind of sense. But what had gone so wrong between them? Did Roman truly do what she had just heard, kill his mother and Syres’s brother?
"Are you going to keep hiding?" Roman’s voice cut through her spiraling thoughts, pulling her back to the present. He was standing right in front of her, and she flinched when she realized she had been caught.
"No, I was just looking for Zara. I will get going now," she said quickly, attempting to leave, but he gently stopped her, beginning to speak.
"You don’t have to attend the joint meals. I will eat with you whenever I am free," he said. "Also, Kay will give you a list of the guests on the yacht, so you will know their names before I introduce you."
"Introduce me?" She repeated, taken aback. "What about Michelle? Isn’t she here?"
"You are my wife, not Michelle," he replied coolly and her heart skipped a beat. "Who else would I introduce?"
His words left her speechless. She was still trying to adjust to this new, unpredictable version of him, it felt surreal, like the moment she blinked, she would wake from a dream.
"Why?" The question escaped her lips before she even thought about it.
"Do I need a reason to introduce my wife?" He countered, watching her carefully.
"But... you said you weren’t going to introduce me to the public," she reminded him, her voice low.
"They are family friends, not the public. Besides, your family is here. We need to make them believe we are a happy couple. Or do you already have a response prepared if your old woman asks for her heir?" He said flatly.
Her lips parted slightly. "Oh..." she muttered, now understanding. It was all for show. That made more sense, it grounded the illusion. In fact, she had been worrying about how to avoid the old woman’s probing questions.
She might be able to avoid her for now, but it was only a matter of time before her stepmother made a move and forced a confrontation.
"We will eat together tonight. Kay will bring you to my room," Roman added before turning to leave.
She nodded silently and watched him go.
Once he disappeared down the corridor, Patricia decided to return to her room and ask a maid to bring her meal there. Roman had given her a reason to skip the joint meals, and honestly, she was more than relieved. The last thing she wanted was to sit at a table with four powerful families, especially when the fifth was her own poisonous one.
