Chapter 38: To talk

Outside the mansion, two of Roman’s cars were stationed. Michelle stood beside Silas, looking so innocent that Patricia almost got fooled again. She couldn’t fathom how someone could harbor such hatred and still pretend to love you to your face.

Kay raised an eyebrow when he saw Syres carrying Patricia out, wondering why it was him and not Roman. Just as he was about to head in and check on his boss, Zara emerged and Roman followed shortly after.

Zara, impatient as always, landed her gaze on the pretentious Michelle and scoffed, a devilish smile spreading across her face. She had always sensed something fake about that woman, and now she was glad to be proven right. Nothing could stop her from confronting her today.

She stormed over to Michelle and grabbed a fistful of her hair, tightening her grip so suddenly that it left everyone in shock.

"Ahh! Let go of me!" Michelle cried out, struggling to break free.

"Miss Zara!" Silas called out, his tone unusually casual, which only surprised Kay more.

"What?!" She snapped, shooting him a glare before turning back to Michelle and warning, "This is only a warning. I will kill you myself and gladly go to jail for it." Then she smiled darkly and leaned in to whisper in Michelle’s ear, "You will not know peace unless you leave that house." Just as she was about to release her, Silas shoved her aside and quickly shielded Michelle from her.

"You are crazy," he said, staring at her in disbelief. He had thought she was just wild in bed, who knew she was even crazier in real life?

Taking a step forward, Zara smirked. "Well, you didn’t seem to mind this crazy lady’s body some nights ago."

Silas’s face flushed red, his brows drawing together in anger and something else.

Having succeeded in embarrassing him, Zara dusted off an invisible speck from her clothes and walked up to Patricia and Syres.

Moments later, a car pulled up in front of them.

"I will drive her home," Syres announced calmly, helping Patricia into the front seat before getting behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, Kay approached Roman.

"What should we do?" He asked.

"Get a technician to check my phone. Find out who tampered with it," Roman ordered, handing it over.

Michelle, who caught sight of the phone, began to panic, her heart pounding. If only she hadn’t hired such incompetent men, she wouldn’t be in this mess. She had spent a fortune trying to get rid of Patricia, but it seemed Patricia’s God was firmly behind her. Still, Michelle resolved to deny everything. If there was no solid evidence, they couldn’t confront her.

"Are you okay?" Silas turned to ask her.

Zara, who was just about to get into her car, overheard and felt a surge of irritation. Her prey was getting attention from another predator. He would beg for her one day and she would make sure of it. Grumbling, she climbed into her car and drove off.

...

Upon arriving home, a team of doctors was already waiting for her. Syres was the first to leave, leaving Patricia alone with Zara.

"You can go. They wouldn’t dare hurt me here, not with the doctors around. They will be staying until I can walk properly," Patricia urged, noticing how Zara kept getting calls from her boss. She knew how important Zara’s photography work was and didn’t want to stand in the way of her career. Zara would have done the same if the roles were reversed. Patricia was fine now, and there was no need to hold her back any longer.

"Fine," Zara sighed. "But make sure to call me, even if you so much as stumble. I am getting a small phone and I will send you the number. It will always be on me."

Patricia nodded, laughing at her overprotective friend.

"Oh, now you can laugh, huh? After scaring me half to death," Zara teased, then tickled her waist, making Patricia laugh even louder.

"Go already!" Patricia said between laughs, and finally, Zara left.

Once she was gone, Patricia took a deep breath and looked around the room, suddenly finding it stifling. Maybe it was because she hadn’t been at the hospital for some time now so it made the room feel cramped. She couldn’t wait to start walking again and return to work. Thankfully, the doctors said the cold had only affected her chest and she would recover in a few days. They added that if she had spent the night in that freezer, it would have been hard to save her, or worse, she might have died before anyone found her.

Thankfully, she had Syres. Who would have thought a stalker would end up saving her?

As sleep began to creep in, her eyes grew heavy until a knock snapped her fully awake.

"Who’s there?" She called, but instead of a reply, the door creaked open and Roman stepped in.

"Please leave. I need to rest," she said, turning onto her side, deliberately avoiding eye contact. She planned to keep avoiding him until she left the house. It was only a matter of days before she would be discharged. In her opinion, a single day’s rest was enough, but the doctors Roman had brought seemed eager to curry favor with him, so they told him she needed several days.

"We need to talk," he said.

She remained silent, offering no response.

Roman had expected the cold shoulder and didn’t mind playing the bad guy if it meant getting her to talk. He had already pieced together what happened but he still needed to hear from her how she wanted the case to be handled.

"I know Michelle did this," he said, "but I need you to tell me how you want it to be handled."

He hoped the thought of justice might bring her some comfort but it wasn’t working either. He wasn’t good with words and knowing how easily women’s moods change, he knew not saying much would be wiser. At first, he contemplated getting Zara but temperament wise, Zara was the worst option.
