Chapter 31: Wild girl

"I am leaving," Patricia said, refusing to stay. She was still frowning when Zara quickly grabbed her hand and urged, "Please, for my sake. It’s a life-and-death situation."

Patricia’s expression shifted into confusion. How was her presence here a matter of life and death for Zara?

"What life and..." she began, but before she could finish, a voice interrupted from behind, drawing everyone’s attention. They all turned to face the speaker, each wearing a different expression.

"What a coincidence. This is really lovely," Michelle said as she approached, her hands affectionately holding Roman’s. Zara rolled her eyes at the sight. She couldn’t help but feel irritated every time she saw Michelle. Despite trying to convince herself that Michelle had been the victim in everything that happened, something about her just felt off.

Who stays after watching the man they love marry someone else? And the way she treated Patricia...like a friend, not a fellow wife made it clear she didn’t see her as a threat, or perhaps didn’t even care.

"Oh, it’s the smiley doll," Zara muttered, unable to hold back her words. She forced a smile, prompting Patricia to pinch her lightly before offering Michelle a polite smile.

"I thought you were going out with your friend?" Roman finally spoke. Patricia was at a loss for words. She had thought the same until her friend clearly had other plans.

"Why do you care who she goes out with?" Zara snapped, rolling her eyes.

"Miss Zara, just because you prefer the wayward lifestyle doesn’t mean your friend has to," Roman replied coldly.

Zara’s mouth parted in shock, her frown deepening. Even a child could understand the insult in his words. He had just called her wayward.

"Speaking of wayward, who parades around with his lover while neglecting his legally married wife? Tell me about waywardness!" She shot back, her gaze fixed on Michelle.

"I should have considered bringing Pat along, but I didn’t want to impose on her, so I didn’t ask," Michelle said suddenly, her voice quivering, tears threatening to spill.

Zara scoffed. "And you expect us to believe that?" She said before turning away.

"Are we going to keep wasting time here?" Syres, who had been quietly enjoying the scene, finally spoke. He turned to Patricia and extended his hand. "Shall we?"

Patricia hesitated. Maybe she was overthinking everything. She owed Roman no loyalty. If he didn’t want her with Syres, then he should have married her properly and stayed faithful. Or handed her the divorce papers and moved on.

"Okay," she said at last, placing her hand on Syres’s. He entwined his arm with hers, and together they walked into the hall.

The ballet began shortly after they entered, and to Patricia’s surprise, it turned out to be more interesting than she had expected, especially for a show that didn’t look promising at first glance.

"Is this your first ballet performance?" Syres asked, and she nodded in response. Her family had never given her the chance to simply be a girl. All the love and attention had always gone to Clara. She had thrown herself into her studies, hoping one day she would earn enough to attend every event she once missed. Things hadn’t gone as planned but they weren’t all bad either.

After the show, Syres suggested going on another date, but Patricia insisted on staying back and postponing it to another day. Giving up on trying to persuade her, Syres leaned closer and whispered, "I will let it go for tonight because of the two pairs of eyes that won’t stop staring. But you will be mine soon enough...I promise you."

Then he pulled back and smirked, making her heart skip a beat. Was he seriously threatening to make her his? The audacity.

"Bye," he added with a wink, then glanced behind her before walking away.

"I am sleeping over tonight. We don’t want anyone bullying you now," Zara said as soon as he was gone, wrapping her arm around Patricia’s.

"What are you up to now?" Patricia asked with a sigh, growing suspicious.

Zara only giggled, clearly thinking about something. "Just my reward for bringing you here. You will see. Let’s go," she said, dragging Patricia to the car and driving them back to the estate.

When they arrived, Zara’s car pulled in just as a strange-looking car also parked nearby. Patricia immediately noticed the wide smile on Zara’s face and wondered if she already knew who was inside. Judging by her excitement, it certainly seemed so.

"Get out!" Zara urged, pushing Patricia toward the door.

"Okay, okay," Patricia raised her hands in mock surrender and stepped out, laughing at how dramatic her friend was being. There was only one thing that could make Zara this giddy and she doubted it was that. But judging by the car, it looked like it belonged to a man. Wait... was her so-called reward a new man toy? No wonder Syres got her to cooperate. Zara wasn’t easily moved, not even by money. It wouldn’t be surprising if it turned out to be what she thought but she didn’t want Zara getting her heart toyed with again. Behind that wild girl image was a girl that needed to be loved by a good man.

Inside the house, they found Roman and Michelle speaking to a stranger. Patricia was about to walk past them, having no reason to engage, but Zara, clearly up to something, grabbed her and led her in their direction.

"What are you doing?" Patricia whispered, eyes wide.

"Getting my reward," Zara whispered back. They soon reached the group.

The stranger was the first to notice them. His gaze shifted to Patricia, making her quickly avert her eyes.

"You must be Patricia?" He asked, smiling warmly at her.

Zara scowled. Why was her reward smiling at another woman? And didn’t he know Patricia was already married? What was wrong with him, she needed to teach him a lesson and she would do it just right.
