Chapter 551: Chapter 434: The Time Thief (Part 2)
Huge bronze doors were engraved with countless runes.
Wu Xiaode glanced at them only to feel a sudden burst of intense pain in his eyes.
"Don’t look, those are the highest-level forbidden Law Runes; looking too long can cause trouble."
Chris warned cautiously.
She jumped down from the top of Wu Xiaode’s head and stood on his shoulder to look at the bronze door.
"If this door is closed, how do we get in?" Wu Xiaode asked.
"Only the Parasite of the Time Corpse can enter this door, any other beings that reach here will be detected and immediately killed!"
Chris patted Wu Xiaode’s shoulder, saying with a tone of pride:
"Luckily, you’ve obtained ’Evernight City,’ and just happened to be contaminated with that monster’s scent, which is truly a one in a million chance."
"How do you know ’Evernight City’?" Wu Xiaode asked.
"That, haha, we’ll talk about it later, let’s get to work first," said Chris.
She pointed at the bronze door, signaling Wu Xiaode to move closer.
Wu Xiaode maintained his "Evernight City" and was shrouded in that layer of dark mist as he stepped slowly toward the bronze door.
"To confine a corpse, they’re using such a gigantic door; could it be that the corpse of time is very large?"
He said, puzzled.
"Not at all; this door confines not only the Time Corpse but many other strange things as well," Chris explained.
She waved her short staff continuously and went on:
"In the many past destructions, the disaster demons always encountered some things that even they couldn’t figure out."
"—After all, the world is so vast that there are wonders at every turn, and there are always some things that disaster demons cannot destroy."
"They are of no use, but still, the disaster demons feel these things have unknown value."
"Those quirky items are stored together in this door."
"Be careful, I’m going to open the door!"
By this time, Wu Xiaode had already reached the bronze door.
Chris pointed her short staff at the bronze door and screamed loudly:
"We’re not here to cause trouble, just temporarily nowhere to use the restroom, let me in for a bit, and I’ll be right out!"
The short staff remained motionless with no magical fluctuations occurring.
Wu Xiaode also didn’t sense any emergence of power from Chris.
But the next second—
Boom!
The bronze door actually opened a crack!
Endless forbidden runes flashed rapidly on the door, emitting warning, attack, defense, transport, imprisonment, assimilation... and so on, numerous rune powers, but after a few breaths, they did not release.
Wu Xiaode dumbfoundedly said, "That worked?"
He felt his understanding of the world had been overturned.
After all, he had also witnessed numerous formidable beings, received the inheritance of the Human Emperor, and fought against various monsters.
The runes on the door at first glance seemed utterly beyond confrontation.
And yet, Chris said a word, and the door actually opened?
Chris pulled out a pink handkerchief, wiped the nonexistent sweat from her forehead, and sighed wearily:
"Shouting so loudly all of a sudden made my throat a bit thirsty; it’d be nice if there were some chilled pear juice to drink right now."
"I didn’t bring any pears either," Wu Xiaode shrugged.
"Alright, let’s not talk about that, squeeze yourself in first! The gap is just wide enough for you to shimmy through sideways!" Chris urged.
Wu Xiaode had no choice but to turn sideways, take a deep breath, suck in his stomach, and carefully squeezed himself through the door.
Boom—
The door swiftly closed.
—He really got in!
"How did you do that?" Wu Xiaode sighed and asked.
"There’s no door we fairies cannot enter; that’s our race’s innate talent. If you’d read some stories about us, you’d understand that," Chris said.
"So, where can I find such storybooks?"
"It’s a secret for now, we’ll talk about it later."
The two of them talked while observing their surroundings.
The floor and walls here were entirely made of bronze, engraved with dense, bizarre runes.
One after another, individual metal cells floated in mid-air.
Each cell was also entirely made of bronze, and the bars were composed of dark light columns that emitted a "buzzing" sound.
The whole hall emitted a very regular "buzz—buzz—" sound.
"Don’t touch those bars, they converge the power of all disaster demons. Any being that tries to open the bars will immediately suffer the full force of the disaster demons’ strike."
Chris warned.
"Got it, but where’s the Time Corpse?" Wu Xiaode asked.
He took a step forward.
The next instant.
The "buzzing" sounds suddenly became more urgent.
Wu Xiaode immediately stood still.
"Although we have the protection of ’Evernight City’ and the scent of that monster, after all, we’re not it," Chris said.
"What will happen?" Wu Xiaode asked.
Chris spread her tiny palm and said solemnly:
"Five minutes—"
"We have only five minutes to find the Time Corpse. If we haven’t found it by then, that monster will sense the anomaly here and immediately return."
Five minutes... huh?
Wu Xiaode looked towards the floating cells in mid-air.
Too many.
At least a few hundred.
—To find the Time Corpse from among these?
"We start immediately!"
Wu Xiaode spoke and leaped forward, looking at a cell.
There was a piece of deadwood upright in the cell.
Deadwood...
From the Book of the Dead, a line of text emerged:
"This is a piece of deadwood; the disaster demon destroyed a world, but the power of destruction didn’t erase this piece of wood, and it also couldn’t be destroyed, so it was brought back."
He looked at another cell to see a brown dairy cow lying there sprawling.
The dairy cow was dead.
"A cow from the pretend-dead zoo, originating from some Mysterious World."
"This book cannot explain its existence."
—Surely this cow isn’t the Time Corpse?
Wu Xiaode was somewhat uncertain, and asked:
"Chris, what does the Time Corpse look like anyway?"
"I don’t know... maybe a clock?" Chris said uncertainly.
You don’t know, and you still called me to steal the Time Corpse?
Wu Xiaode was at a loss for words.
After making such a big fuss, it would be a joke if we can’t even identify the Time Corpse in the end.
He felt a sense of urgency and turned to look at the third cell.
Inside the cell was a statue.
The carved figure was of a serene woman with her eyes closed, appearing like a religious goddess, exuding solemnity and dignity.
A line of ice crystal small characters emerged on the Book of the Dead:
"?????"
Then another line of ice crystal small characters appeared:
"At the very least, you would need a Bone Phone 16 Max to possibly make a detailed description of the dairy cow, but it still can’t explain the origin of the statue."
Wood.
Dairy cow.
Goddess statue.
Wood could be explained, and the dairy cow at least got a mention, but for the goddess statue, there were only question marks left.
And there are hundreds of cells!
Wu Xiaode looked around, his gaze sweeping over each cell, watching the bizarre and odd things within them.
A series of question marks appeared on the Book of the Dead.
What now?
How on earth can we find the Time Corpse?
Wu Xiaode stepped on a series of floating bronze hands, quickly making a round along the numerous cells.
"I didn’t see anything related to clocks," he said.
"Neither did I," added Chris.
"Didn’t you bring some tools to identify the Time Corpse when you came?" Wu Xiaode asked.
Chris scratched her head embarrassedly and said hesitantly:
"I only knew it was here. I thought it would be just like in the movies and novels, that you just need to show up and find it."
"Movies? Novels?" Wu Xiaode asked, puzzled.
"Yeah, I’ve been binge-watching shows lately," Chris said, waving her hands playfully.
Wu Xiaode fell silent for a moment.
Fairies can indeed be reliable, even capable of opening such bronze doors.
But fairies are also entirely unreliable...
Never mind that now.
We must hurry and search!
Wu Xiaode continued to observe the cells when suddenly he heard a buzzing noise close to his ear.
He looked towards the bars.
The black light that emanated from the bars began to dissipate into the air, creating an explosive noise.
"Only two minutes left!"
Chris said, her face turning pale.
Only two minutes remained.
How can we find the Time Corpse now?
Wu Xiaode hesitated for a moment and then asked, "Chris, is the Time Corpse the most precious thing here?"
"Absolutely correct! Time is one of the highest Laws, even forming a dimension on its own. It’s the most valuable trophy the Epoch marauders seek!" Chris nodded in agreement.
"But we don’t recognize it," Wu Xiaode said.
"Right, we don’t know which one it is, it’s too mysterious," Chris replied, sounding dejected.
Wu Xiaode pondered for a few moments.
Neither the fairy nor he could find the Time Corpse.
And the five minutes were almost up.
What to do?
Ideas flashed through his mind, and suddenly he said:
"Aside from us, what else can trigger these prohibitions?"
"Of course, if there’s a problem within one of the cells, it will get triggered, and then the Parasite of the Time Corpse will rush back," the fairy explained.
A problem in the cell...
Wu Xiaode’s gaze sharpened, and he looked towards the cell where the feigning dead dairy cow lay.
"Chris, that dairy cow is feigning death. Do you have any way to wake it up?" he asked.
Chris looked in the direction of his gaze and laughed:
"I know its origins, so there’s a way to wake it up—but as soon as it awakes, it will trigger the prohibition, and the Parasite of the Time Corpse will come back."
"We don’t have time now. Wake up that dairy cow immediately," Wu Xiaode said.
"Are you sure?" Chris asked incredulously.
"Sure, wake it up," Wu Xiaode insisted confidently.
"Alright then."
Chris rummaged through her pocket, pulled out a colorful little horn, and blew into it forcefully.
No sound emerged.
However, the feigning dead dairy cow suddenly jumped up from the ground, crouched in front of the black bars, and looked around excitedly.
"Has the ball started again?"
It let out a low roar excitedly.
Whirr—
The bars instantly emitted a high frequency squeal.
The intense black light shot up to the sky and disappeared into the Void.
In a split second.
A dark humanoid presence broke through the Void and appeared before Wu Xiaode and Chris.
The Parasite of the Time Corpse!
It had come back!
The monster first landed above a secluded cell.
"...Still there..."
It seemed to breathe a sigh of relief before looking towards the cell that erupted with the shrill cries.
The dairy cow was crouching atop the bars.
"It’s this cow, truly detestable, making me come back here especially," the monster growled.
On the other side.
Wu Xiaode tucked himself into a corner, his gaze fixed on the secluded cell where the monster had paused.
Inside that cell stood a large flag fluttering in the wind.
While it seemed unlikely—
That had to be it!
