Chapter 182: Chapter 53 Side Quest Completed!
Running away?
"Once we run, won’t our trial be considered a failure?" Wu Xiaode said.
"Failure doesn’t matter, at worst we just accumulate Soul Power and come back next time, but if we die on the battlefield, won’t we fall into a deep slumber?" Rotten Bone said.
——No undead wishes to fall into a deep slumber.
That would mean being trampled underfoot by others, endlessly contributing Soul Power to provide energy for others to cultivate, as well as maintaining the operation of the entire Death Realm.
But Wu Xiaode’s situation was different.
He glanced at the Void.
The Book of the Dead had already opened, revealing rows of ice crystal small script:
"The trials of the Death Realm are extremely strict."
"Once the trial fails, the corresponding punishment will be executed by the Causality Law, specifically as follows:"
"You will lose everything you have gained from the increase of Soul Power from 11 to 20."
Wu Xiaode immediately became vigilant.
How could this be acceptable?
Abilities like Thousand Hands, a perfect evolutionary skill, are hard to come by, absolutely not to be lost.
Not to mention he had already won the title challenge of the Holy City, and just by going there once, he could obtain a unique title.
All of these would be lost.
With what would he then fight the One-eyed Giant?
"How many demons did you say there were on the other side?" Wu Xiaode asked the skull.
"Over two hundred," the skull said.
"How strong are they?" Wu Xiaode asked again.
"The same as us, all of us are participants in the 20 point Soul Power trial——a full two hundred! A volley of fire and I’d be taken out on the spot," the skull said mournfully.
"How far are they?"
"They’re here!"
No sooner had the voice fallen than a series of violent booms came from outside the camp.
The demons were here!
"Run, man, it’s over if you’re late!" the skull howled.
"Wait," Wu Xiaode calmly asked, "what exactly is our trial task?"
"I told you already, it’s all on the boundary marker——it’s ’hold the current boundary marker’!" the skull said.
Wu Xiaode looked up at the boundary marker.
Indeed.
The task was clearly written: "By all means, hold the current boundary marker."
But with over two hundred demons attacking, how could this place possibly be held?
Screams of agony came in waves from the outskirts of the camp.
The ground shook unceasingly.
The demons had broken in!
Wu Xiaode still sat unmoving at the base of the boundary marker.
The task was to hold the boundary marker.
The boundary marker——
With a flash of thought, he suddenly cried out: "Rise."
A pair of bronze hands instantly emerged from the Void, grabbing the boundary marker from left and right and pulling it upward——
Boom!
The boundary marker was suddenly uprooted!
Wu Xiaode looked down and pulled a thread, threading it through the two eye sockets of the skull and hung it at his waist.
A mist swirled around him.
He vanished.
The boundary marker also disappeared into thin air.
The next instant.
The demons rushed into the camp like wolves, using their overwhelming numbers to simply crush the mere dozen or so undead defending the camp.
"Are they all killed? Come and take a look!"
A demon with pale twin horns and completely black eyes roared angrily.
The Corpse Transformation Demon emerged from behind it and made a round in the camp.
"Report to your excellency, one undead has run away!"
The Corpse Transformation Demon reported respectfully.
Upon hearing it was an undead, the demons immediately relaxed.
"Isn’t the undead the most trash of the Undead Species? Send two people to chase for the gesture, maybe it was already scared witless and ran off out of sight," the Demon Leader said unconcernedly.
"Understood."
Two demons vanished in a flash, speeding through the entire camp toward the mountain path behind.
The remaining demons immediately began cleaning up the battlefield.
Seizing this moment, Wu Xiaode was ready to turn and leave.
Suddenly.
The skull at his waist trembled slightly.
"Good buddy, take a look at the boundary marker, it seems to be ready to issue a temporary task," the skull transmitted quietly.
"How do you know?" Wu Xiaode asked, puzzled.
"I’m a commander, it’ll contact me first," the skull said.
Wu Xiaode looked up and indeed saw new rows of script emerging on the boundary marker:
"Side mission: The traitor must die!"
"An undead has defected to the demons, leading the demon assault team to this remote and vulnerable camp, resulting in a one-sided massacre."
"The undead never allow betrayal."
"Kill it!"
Wu Xiaode read these few lines back and forth, pondering.
There’s no reward explanation for this task.
Is it worth doing after all?
I’m not a native of the Undead Kingdom, only coming here for each trial, truly in the dark!
It might be better to ask for its opinion.
"Rotten Bone, what do you say?" he asked directly.
"Given our current situation, it’s problematic just to stay alive, so we have to painfully give up on this side mission," Rotten Bone communicated with reluctance.
Painfully give up...
Very well.
It seems this mission is worth doing.
Wu Xiaode turned his head to look at the Corpse Transformation Demon.
He saw it kneeling in front of the Demon Leader, devoutly muttering something.
The Demon Leader cut his finger, squeezed out a drop of blood, and let it fall on its head, intoning, "For your meritorious service in this raid, I will perform the racial replacement ritual to transform you into one of our Demon race, freeing you from the threat of death’s slumber."
"Thank you, my lord!" the Corpse Transformation Demon said joyfully.
The Demon Leader nodded, about to commence the ritual, when he suddenly remembered something and asked,
"What exactly does your Death Realm’s slumber feel like? Why do you all dread it so?"
The Corpse Transformation Demon replied, "It’s a biting cold and solitude that never ends, and you’re acutely aware that all of your power is being siphoned away by the world, with despair being the only emotion you have left."
"I see," said the Demon Leader.
"That’s not even the scariest part," the Corpse Transformation Demon started to say but then hesitated.
"What else is there? Don’t be afraid, let’s hear it," urged the Demon Leader.
"My lord, I cannot say unless I’m no longer an undead," said the Corpse Transformation Demon.
The Demon Leader chanted a spell.
Suddenly, pale runes appeared around the Corpse Transformation Demon, spinning ceaselessly around it.
The ritual had begun!
"Ughhhh—"
The Corpse Transformation Demon lay on the ground, moaning in agony.
Its body began to transform.
The aura of death dissipated from its being, replaced by a scent reeking of sulfur and flames.
Its skin started to fall off.
Fiery scales began sprouting from the surface of its body.
Above its head, two huge runes landed on its forehead, immediately burning through the bone and manifesting as twisted horns.
The Corpse Transformation Demon endured the ritual that felt like cruel branding, yet its roars were filled with satisfaction:
"Ahhhhhh— I, an undead of the Corpse Transformation Clan, am ultimately—"
Thwack.
In the midst of a sound reminiscent of metal piercing fabric, its voice abruptly stopped.
The Corpse Transformation Demon’s face contorted wildly, frantically reaching for the large hole in its throat.
But it was futile.
A voice whispered close to its ear: "Sorry, I was planning to escape... but there’s a mission concerning you."
The Corpse Transformation Demon’s pupils shrank, a look of disbelief on its face.
It recognized the voice.
It was the dead man!
That piece of trash—
He actually—
He actually dared to stay here, and even killed me?
The Corpse Transformation Demon only had time to think this much.
The next second.
An excruciating pain.
Its head was cut off.
At this point, the Demon Leader couldn’t care less about the backlash from interrupting the ritual.
The other demons around also realized what had happened.
"It’s an invisible one!"
"Use that move."
"Everyone attack!"
Boom—
The ground instantly turned blood-red, boiling flames shot up into the sky, turning the entire camp into a river of flowing magma.
"Kill him!" the Demon Leader roared.
All demons looked around.
—In this magma-filled Hell, no matter how powerful the Invisibility Skill, it would not withstand the scorching of Hell’s Fiery Flames and would reveal its true form!
One breath.
Two breaths.
Three breaths.
The magma turned into rain, weaving an impenetrable rain of destruction between heaven and earth.
But that guy still didn’t show up.
A grave expression appeared in the Demon Leader’s eyes.
"Prison Flames Book."
He uttered a low command.
A book with a fiery red cover materialized before him, opening by itself.
The Demon Leader only glanced at it before immediately commanding,
"All units, retreat."
"Immediately!"
Though the demons were a bit confounded, they could still obey orders on the battlefield without question.
Everyone quickly formed ranks and retreated from the camp at high speed.
Before long.
They had all cleared out.
Only after traveling several hundred miles, thoroughly distancing themselves from the battlefield, did the Demon Leader breathe a sigh of relief and ordered a break.
An elderly demon materialized from the Void, respectfully asking,
"Your Excellency, this was your first strike, why did you withdraw from the battlefield?"
"That invisible guy wasn’t hit by our wide-area attack," said the Demon Leader.
"Shouldn’t you have treasures capable of nullifying Invisibility on you?"
"It didn’t work," said the Demon Leader.
The elderly demon’s expression also turned serious.
The Demon Leader shook his head and said, "This is an extremely rare ability user, with at least two skills capable of completely suppressing me, not to mention you guys stand no chance against him."
The elderly demon was stunned, saying in confusion, "That shouldn’t be possible, this is only a 20 Soul Power Trial field, could such a being actually appear?"
"Hmph, never underestimate the Death Realm, no one knows what lies buried beneath, or what kind of monster might suddenly wake up—"
The Demon Leader walked forward without looking back, saying,
"My mission was to strike the Undead Camp, and now that it’s completed, there’s no need to linger, let’s go!"
"Yes!" the elderly demon replied.
