Chapter 123: Chapter 97 The Two Phases of Reality and Illusion
"You’d better call your friends, like that Wu Xiaode. He tried to persuade me to join the film company. It seems like he must be the decision-maker," said Li Kunlun calmly.
"He’s not," laughed Xiao Baihong.
"He is," insisted Li Kunlun confidently.
"He’s not."
"He is."
"He really isn’t."
"Whatever, get someone over here right now or I’m going to be executed soon."
"...Interesting."
Xiao Baihong gestured with his hand.
A big black SUV suddenly stopped in front of him.
"Get in. We’re leaving," said Xiao Baihong.
"Where to?" asked Li Kunlun.
"A safe place," replied Xiao Baihong.
Li Kunlun immediately got into the car and settled into the back seat.
Xiao Baihong also got into the car.
The large SUV roared to life and headed towards the Capital.
In the car.
Xiao Baihong took out his phone and quickly mentioned all members in the group chat:
"Li Kunlun has awakened. He says he’s a convict in grave danger, asking for reinforcements."
"I’ll report to the emperor right away, you head to the Capital first," said Zhao Zhibing.
"Shared the route with you," replied Xiao Baihong.
"Don’t worry, I’m on my way!" assured Zhao Zhibing.
Xiao Baihong put down his phone, then suddenly looked up and glanced out the window.
A face was pressed against the window, staring intently at Li Kunlun.
It was the face of a human man, but it quickly morphed into the visage of a ghost.
"A heavy felon... You still have untold sufferings to endure, you should be tormented to the fullest, and die in agony in this world, not awakening now," the ghost said.
"Save me," pleaded Li Kunlun.
"Alright," replied Xiao Baihong nonchalantly.
Outside the car, a gust of wind blew, sweeping the ghost away.
Hidden within the wind were countless blades, slicing back and forth, instantly turning the ghost into a mist of blood.
"This is just the beginning. They won’t give up," Li Kunlun said with his eyes closed.
"If you know something, please give me some advice, so that we can safely get away," said Xiao Baihong with a smile.
"Is there anything to eat? I need to replenish my energy to reactivate my original abilities," said Li Kunlun.
Xiao Baihong reached into his pocket, fumbled around, and pulled out a lollipop.
"I came in a hurry, didn’t bring much. How’s this?" he asked.
"Better than nothing."
Li Kunlun took the lollipop, popped it into his mouth, and completely crushed and swallowed the candy.
"You’re supposed to lick the lollipop. Eating it like that, you won’t get the taste," said Xiao Baihong with a tone of regret.
Li Kunlun suddenly laughed.
"No wonder you’ve survived until now. It looks like you’re not just any common criminal—tell me, how did you survive when you awakened?" he asked.
Xiao Baihong reminisced, "Where I come from is quite superstitious. A guy like me who could summon ’shadow winds’ at the age of five would surely bring calamity, so they decided to drown me in the river to protect the village."
"Your family didn’t stop it?" asked Li Kunlun.
"Lots of family members, they wouldn’t miss one. Plus, there would be money after my death, such a wonderful thing."
"So how did you not die?"
"Just then the dam broke. Can’t blame me for that," said Xiao Baihong, covering his mouth and snickering.
"I’d love to keep chatting with you, but unfortunately, someone else is coming," said Li Kunlun.
Xiao Baihong looked out of the window and muttered, "If only there was a way to delay the enemy."
Li Kunlun breathed softly and whispered, "We’ve been talking all this time, just waiting for you to say that."
He reached out and pointed outside the window.
In an instant.
The whole city seemed to spread open as if held apart by something.
The land grew wider, the roads multiplied, like expansive fields everywhere without end in sight.
Glued to the window glass, Xiao Baihong looked out to see new roads materializing around the black SUV, each one filled with cars speeding along, each with black SUVs just like theirs.
"What is this?" marveled Xiao Baihong.
"Dual Reality—It’s my ability. I can only construct things, either false or real, when the people around me demand it—right now, since my powers have just awakened, I can only use them to confuse our enemies," explained Li Kunlun.
Xiao Baihong, catching on to a subtle meaning, said in surprise, "Are you saying—"
"That’s right, the executioner has arrived, and it wants to find me, to kill me," said Li Kunlun coldly.
"Speed up," Xiao Baihong ordered the Royal Guard driving the car.
The vehicle erupted into a roar, dashing down the road, quickly disappearing into the distance.
At the same moment.
In the street where the shootout had erupted.
A man wearing white trousers and bare-chested quietly apparated.
His face bearded and fierce, he stared in the direction where the car had vanished for a long time.
"The shackles of the criminal have loosened."
"According to the prison code, he should be captured and fitted with a new set of manacles;"
"If the criminal resists fiercely, execute them on the spot."
"...Let’s just execute them on the spot."
The man walked forward, step by step.
Though he obviously wasn’t walking fast, each step he took spanned hundreds of meters.
Before long, he had disappeared without a trace.
The Royal Palace.
Zhao Zhibing was in the middle of giving her report.
Suddenly, a minister hurried in and exclaimed loudly, "Your Majesty, a marvelous sight has appeared in the downtown area of Dongjin City; multiple roads have appeared out of nowhere, with all sorts of cars driving on them."
"Did many people see it?" the Emperor asked.
"All the citizens saw it!" the minister replied.
"Who would have thought that instead of monsters appearing in the city, our Awakener would have created such a spectacle," the Emperor ruminated.
"Your Majesty, should we acknowledge the existence of the anomaly?" the minister asked.
The Emperor looked to Zhao Zhibing.
Zhao Zhibing glanced at her phone and said, "I’ve just received a message. Those are merely illusions released by a new Awakener, not real."
"Have them immediately cancel the Magic, and then we need to do something else to recover—"
The Emperor, enlivened, rattled off his instructions, "Do not admit this is an anomaly. Mobilize the news media to claim it was a holographic scene created by ’Abundant Martial Virtue’ film company!"
"Additionally, immediately get those top-tier celebrities trending—those who divorced, secretly married, cheated—spill it all out."
"Yes, Your Majesty, you are wise!" the minister hurried off.
"Will this work?" Zhao Zhibing asked, anxious.
"Of course, it will work. The public actually has a subconscious aversion to anomalies because they would completely shatter their values and life, whereas celebrity scandals align with their gossip needs, which will divert their attention," the Emperor explained.
"Is it certain to succeed?"
"That depends on whether we can rescue that Awakener. With him, we can create illusions at any time, which will be persuasive," the Emperor said.
After pondering for a moment, the Emperor continued, "Wu Xiaode has earned the people’s trust; I will have him go live and explain immediately, claiming it’s a holographic image made for filming."
Zhao Zhibing said, "Please allow me to go and meet Li Kunlun."
"Granted. Actually, there aren’t many living Awakeners left... only you can do this. Be extra careful," the Emperor said.
"Understood."
Zhao Zhibing left the great hall.
The Emperor sat alone for a while before letting out a sigh, "It probably can’t be hidden today."
He tapped on the enormous metal helmet and muttered to himself, "No way, I only have one daughter, I must find more people to help."
...
Elsewhere.
Wu Xiaode stood in the golden, glorious hall enveloped in fog.
People came and went around him.
Yet no one noticed or even looked at him.
—Just as only he could see the Death God, no creature could see anything in front of this death fog.
"The President’s office of the Charity Association... is on the third floor."
He checked the office guide, ascended the stairs to the third floor, and arrived at the door of the President’s office.
Just as he was about to knock, the door burst open.
An old man with white hair walked out, flanked by five or six attendants.
Wu Xiaode had no time to dodge, so he forcefully leaped up, floating in mid-air.
He stood on two Demon Hands, ensuring his temporary suspension.
"Completely annihilated? Who exactly has such power?" the old man spat out furiously.
The others didn’t dare to breathe a word.
"No, this matter must be reported immediately—I’ll report it myself!" the old man declared as he strode towards the meeting room at the end of the corridor.
The others hurried to follow him.
Wu Xiaode lightly jumped down from the Demon Hands and followed closely behind them, reaching the end of the corridor.
The meeting room door opened.
The crowd entered in single file, leaving two professionals guarding the door.
Naturally, Wu Xiaode followed suit, positioning himself right behind the elderly man, curious about how he intended to report.
The holographic screen lit up.
After a series of "beep-beep-beep," a figure shrouded in a black robe appeared on the screen.
"The White Bishop is dead, and the staff’s whereabouts are unknown; I’m already aware of that," the man in the black robe spoke calmly.
The white-haired man’s complexion changed drastically, and he knelt down hastily, saying, "Forgive me, Pontiff."
"Never mind forgiveness for now; I’ll send someone to deal with this. There is a special mission I entrust to you," the man in the black robe said.
"Please, Pontiff, instruct us," the white-haired man said.
"Mobilize personnel to work with the Believers in the Capital to set a trap and kill the creator of the Mecha, Xia Huilan," the man in the black robe instructed.
"This can be arranged quickly; we will start preparing immediately," the white-haired man replied.
"Good, her Mecha creations are quite a nuisance. At first, I wanted them in our hands, but now that they have become a card in the hands of the Royal family, we must eliminate her as soon as possible," the man in the black robe continued.
"Could we use the Blood Curse?" the white-haired man inquired.
The man in the black robe thought for a bit and then said, "Yes, you are authorized to sacrifice two hundred people to cast the Blood Curse to kill her."
Suddenly, a voice interjected:
"I don’t think so."
