Chapter 37: The Hunger of The Void
Chapter 37: The Hunger of The Void
Night had fallen over the Whispering Woods, draping the ancient trees in a cloak of velvety darkness.
A large fire crackled and spat in the center of a small clearing, pulsing flickering shadows that danced and writhed amongst the trees.
The Silent Guard, their bodies buzzing with newfound power, had made camp a short distance from the Zalathi ruins, their excitement a dense energy that sparked through the night.
Some sparred with each other, testing the limits of their enhanced strength and speed, their movements fluid and graceful, like predators honing skills.
Others sat in small groups, their voices hushed and reverent, discussing the visions they had seen during the ritual, their eyes wide with a mixture of awe and terror, the line between both becoming thinner.
They all began to slowly understand what their destiny truly was, a bond they had thought they had lost, now returned to them, to be used and exploited until their next life.
Kaelen sat apart from the others, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames, his mind a mix of thoughts and calculations.
The events of the past few days had taken their toll.
The constant whispers of the Voidwell, the draining of memories, the weight of his kingdom’s fate - it all came down hard.
The whispers of his past became a beacon, a lighthouse to the terrible truth that his present may also be no different.
He glanced at the System panel, its cool blue light a contrast to the warm glow of the fire, and he stared at the information there, of the change he had now forced upon the world, and of what is soon to happen.
[Soulbound Count: 36]
[Soulbound Type: Silent Guard]
[Soulbound State: Full Capacity]
[Soulbound Level: 2]
The numbers, cold and impersonal, represented the lives he now held in his hands, the souls bound to his own.
He had taken their loyalty, their free will, their very essence, and forged them into weapons. Weapons he needed to win this war, to protect Caldris, to avenge his family. But at what cost? He barely knew his mother’s face or her laugh when she held him.
If only she didn’t...
He stared at the panel for a long moment, his actions settling upon him like a physical burden, his mind racing. His breathing began to quicken, the cold seeping into his body, the desire to end it all flashing for a moment.
Then, with a deep breath, he pushed the thoughts aside, the whispers quelled. He had a duty to fulfill. A kingdom to save, a promise to keep, at any cost.
"Gather around," he murmured, his voice barely audible above the crackling fire. Yet, the words seemed to echo through the clearing, carrying across the space between them.
As if drawn by an invisible force, the Silent Guard stopped their sparring and their hushed conversations, their attention turning towards their prince, their leader, their host.
They gathered around the fire, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames, their eyes fixed on Kaelen, their expressions a mixture of anticipation and a touch of apprehension.
They knew what he was about to reveal. They had all felt the shift in themselves, in their existence, the change to what they were.
"You have all given Caldris your lives," Kaelen began, his voice low and steady, "You have given me your lives." He paused, letting the weight of his words sink. "And the least I owe you in return... is the truth." He continued, "The truth of your existence, and the truth of the world you now fight for."
"You have all become... Soulbounds," he said, the unfamiliar word hanging heavy in the air.
"It doesn’t make you any less human... not yet. But your lives... your essences... are now bound to mine. You are all part of me now. Indistinguishable in all but body. Your flesh, my will. My goal your only purpose." He paused, his gaze sweeping across their faces, the implications of his words sinking.
"If I should perish, so will all of you. And for every one of you that dies, we all lose a piece of ourselves. We are not just bound by loyalty to a cause, but by a bond of the soul." His smile was not reassuring but a grim acceptance, their fates sealed the moment he had taken their lives.
"But... what are the gains?" he continued, his voice regaining a hint of its usual sharp edge.
"Well, as you’ve already seen, your abilities have been greatly heightened. You now tap into a power... a source of immense energy... called the Voidwell." He paused, his gaze drifting towards the ruins, towards the blood-tinged fountain, and the memories of his first life flashed before his eyes, his smile shifting, becoming a sad, painful grin.
"A tiny fraction of it, to be exact. You are not cursed with the entirety of its madness, as I am. But this link... this bond... it grants you something... special. The ability to grow in strength... through the absorption of souls."
He let out a breath, heavy and tense, "Animal souls. Human souls. The souls of beasts... and perhaps, for me, someday... even the souls of gods."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.
"As you’d expect, the stronger the soul absorbed, the greater the benefits, the greater the increase in strength. But there is a balance. The stronger the soul, the more difficult it will become for you to maintain your own essence. You must temper your hunger, lest it consumes you whole."
"When any of you absorb a soul," Kaelen continued, his gaze now intense, "I, as your host, receive thirty percent of its strength. Consider it... compensation for my own power, which has been... split amongst you."
"The absorption of these souls can grant you unique abilities," he added, his voice laced with a hint of something akin to excitement. "Abilities that depend on your own talents, your affinities, and your deepest desires. Explore them, use them. Test your limits. But make no mistake. Those same powers could also be your downfall."
"You are also now connected to the spirits of this land," Kaelen explained, his gaze drifting towards the ancient trees surrounding the clearing. "Unlike Garron’s elemental magic, or any other type of magic practiced within the Dominion, you now possess something... more: Spiritual magic. You are the land, the spirit that inhabits each part of it. Find your center and master your existence."
He paused, letting the information sink in. "Depending on your connection to these spirits, they can grant you even greater strength. But this... this is a personal journey. One you must undertake on your own."
"For now," Kaelen said, his voice hardening, "you must understand the concept of absorption. This forest is not lacking in wild animals... so go now. And fetch me souls."
The moment he gave the command, the Silent Guard scattered, their movements swift and silent, like predators unleashed upon prey.
They disappeared into the darkness of the woods, their eyes burning with a newfound hunger, their souls yearning for the power that awaited them, their purpose now made clear.
They were no longer merely men, no longer simply following the whims of whoever held the throne, they were his.
All theirs and all of their own strength, a mere fraction of what the prince was capable of. And perhaps that was the most terrifying aspect of such a gift, of such a rite, of such a ritual. They had given everything they had to be here now, and he was all they had left.
It didn’t take long for the System notifications to begin, each one a confirmation of a kill, a soul absorbed, a life extinguished, an offering to the void.
