Chapter 433: Chapter 210: Bright Moon, Long Bridge, Canal

Aunt Xue of the Red Lady Society was a coquettish woman.

No matter who it was, upon their first sight of Aunt Xue, they would think she was a coquettish woman,

including herself.

Her demeanor was different from that of Rouge Lane’s madam, who had to display femininity, an Immortal’s otherworldliness, and sensuality in front of clients.

Aunt Xue, on the other hand, had to pull out all the stops the moment she stepped through the threshold of the woman’s or man’s family, using verbal persuasion and all sorts of body language to quickly close the distance with each person, and only then could she broach the subject of match-making.

Being a matchmaker was also like this.

It was a skillful profession, and being coquettish was the simplest and most convenient method.

With coquetry to the bone, she made herself liked by women and very much by men, always controlling the scene, ensuring everyone’s focus was on her, listening to her words, their gaze following her hand gestures, or her swaying hips, or her revealing neckline.

Her subtle movements made everyone feel they were not neglected.

This was a skill honed through experience.

Chen Shi committed an incident in Rouge Lane that enraged the young master greatly, and Aunt Xue was the busiest of all.

She excelled in connecting various powers, thus running around, contacting the master of Joy Forest, Manager Du, and visiting Manager Qiu at Mingfeng Pavilion, as well as running to the Lu Ban Sect, intending to see Situ Wen; however, Situ Wen had already gone to seek vengeance on Chen Shi and was not at home.

Luckily, when she went looking at the Zheng royal mansion, she encountered Situ Wen.

When she left the Zheng royal mansion, it was getting late, and she hadn’t had the chance to eat before rushing toward Rouge Lane.

Upon arriving at Rouge Lane, it was the busiest time there.

Although the madam and many old women of Rouge Lane were dead, there were still a few experts in Rouge Lane who had cultivated their inner core; her aim was to rally these experts to go to Xinxiang and avenge the madam!

She was versatile at handling different powers, bringing all sides together, agreeing to meet tomorrow outside Yudou City at the Xiangshan Pavilion, to then head together to Qianyang Mountain in Xinxiang.

Aunt Xue led the girls of Rouge Lane at a brisk pace towards Yixiu Garden, laughing as they went, and saying, "Man Ling, Chuchu, Lizhen, there’s no need for you to worry about the madam’s affair. With your aunt here, justice will certainly be served! We’ll go to Xinxiang and use the lives of their villagers as leverage; Chen Shi will definitely show himself!"

Behind her, the three elegantly dressed and charming girls of Rouge Lane, led by Man Ling, said, "We leave it all in Auntie’s hands."

Yixiu Garden, the incense altar of the Red Lady Society, was located quite a distance from Rouge Lane; as they walked, fewer and fewer pedestrians were seen.

Rouge Lane was a place for partying all night, but people from other areas had gone to bed early, as they had to get up for another day’s work.

The sound of the night watchman’s wooden clapper came, indicating it was midnight.

In the middle of Yudou City, there was a canal traversing through with a bridge named the Awakening Lion Bridge, named for the ninety-nine large and small stone lions on it.

The bridge stretched nearly twenty zhang in length and more than three zhang in width, with five arches, often with upstream mining and passenger boats from Henggong Mountain passing under them.

As the four ladies crossed the Awakening Lion Bridge, Aunt Xue started to feel rather hungry, suddenly catching the scent of delicious noodles. Following the scent, under the bridge head’s dim light, she saw a noodle stand still open for business.

The noodle stand had a lantern hung, but it wasn’t very bright.

The owners were an old couple; the man kneaded and pulled noodles while the woman swirled the broth, with white steam billowing up.

Next to them was the prepared dough, covered with a proofing cloth.

Two customers were at the stand; one was slurping his noodles, probably hot, huffing and puffing.

Another, wearing a conical hat, seemed bored as he waited, fiddling with a pair of chopsticks, making a rustling noise, seemingly impatient.

There was also a dog lying next to the stand, pitch black, possibly belonging to the owners, lazily sticking its head into its belly.

Those crossing the bridge at midnight were often on their way from the city’s east side, seeking out revelry; feeling a bit hungry, they stopped at the bridge for a bowl of noodles to warm their stomachs before heading home to rest.

Although it was midnight, the rush for the noodle stand was yet to come.

In another hour, those returning from drinking would arrive here, and business would pick up.

Having been busy all day, Aunt Xue was also somewhat hungry, so she approached and said with a smile, "Are you hungry? I am."

Man Ling replied with a smile, "I’m a little hungry too."

Aunt Xue picked a spot near the light and sat down, requesting, "Old man, four bowls of noodles, and quickly!"

"Right away!"

The stand owner acknowledged and said, "You have one bowl ahead of you; it’ll be ready soon!"

Aunt Xue wasn’t bothered and looked toward the customer with a conical hat. She saw that at some point, the customer had acquired an extra pair of chopsticks and was playing with four of them, scratching back and forth.

Aunt Xue squinted slightly, startled, and then turned her gaze to another customer who was bent over his bowl of noodles, from underneath whom came the sound of splashing.

Aunt Xue watched as the noodles seemed to leak out of the customer’s stomach!

Seeing this, she felt a chill climbing up her spine, her hairs standing on end.

"Is this place haunted?"

Aunt Xue was startled and quickly looked at the stand owner, only to see that the noodle kneader had a stiff set of features and a twisted smile, shockingly a puppet painted to resemble a human face and expression!

She hurriedly looked at the female stand owner, also a puppet!

"The Yanshi Skill of the Lu Ban Sect! Why would Situ the Mechanician’s puppetry be here?"
