Chapter 212: Chapter 160 Liang Zhu (Finale)_2
Fortunately, the area where Luo Jun was located did not get bombed. Two hours later, people gradually came back from the air raid shelters, and seeing their homes unharmed, they cheered with relief. A woman’s husband even took out two small eggs from his bag to celebrate, having the woman cook them for the children, and shared one with Luo Jun to spread the good fortune.
Luo Jun graciously accepted, not intending for the egg to affect his luck, and he pocketed it, planning to bring it back for Liu Tao.
But then, at noon, the air raid alarm rang again.
With the alarm going off twice in a day, no matter how exhausted people were, they could only grumble and quickly gather their belongings to head back to the air raid shelters once more.
This time, the alarm sounded very late, and within two minutes, Qin Huai heard the sounds of bombing from afar.
Luo Jun, irritated by the two bombings in a day, couldn’t concentrate on his novel, so he put away the newspaper and slowly wandered around the city.
After wandering amidst the bombing for over an hour, Luo Jun calculated the time and began to head back. Two bombings in a day and both during the day, he knew that if he didn’t return immediately, Liu Tao would surely be worried, so he had to rush back.
Despite hurrying, Luo Jun was still a bit late when he reached home, and the sky was darkening.
The journey was rather chaotic, Luo Jun didn’t like bustling crowds, or disorder, so he deliberately avoided people as he walked, and even managed to subdue three robbers who tried to take advantage of him, which delayed him some more time.
Normally, Liu Tao would definitely be waiting at the door at this time.
But today, the entrance to Luo Jun’s house was very lively.
There were many people.
A tense-faced Minister Cao, a frazzled maid from Minister Cao’s household, a concubine of Minister Cao covering her nose with a handkerchief, and Mr. Ge’s third concubine with a face full of terror, as if rehearsing a wailing scene...
These were people Qin Huai recognized, along with many others he saw in the air raid shelter who seemed familiar, married couples from the neighborhood and their servants, gathering around with either anxiety or schadenfreude, watching the commotion.
What shocked Qin Huai was that he seemed to have seen a doctor in a white coat.
Someone noticed Luo Jun.
"Mr. Luo is back!"
"Mr. Luo is here!"
"Mr. Luo..."
People started calling out, as if a switch was flipped. Mr. Ge, who was previously in a mock rehearsal himself, suddenly burst into loud cries, his face streaming with tears, panicking and stumbling, slapping himself, crawling over to Luo Jun, nearly kneeling before him.
"Mr. Luo, I am sorry! It’s all my fault, I harmed Mrs. Luo!" Mr. Ge wailed, slapping his own face so hard that it quickly became red and swollen.
"What are you talking about?" Luo Jun asked expressionlessly.
Mr. Ge didn’t answer, just desperately continued to slap his own mouth, seemingly wishing to knock himself unconscious, repeatedly crying out it was all his fault.
Qin Huai hesitated not for a second, leaping into the house.
There were many people outside, but few inside.
Mrs. Cao sobbed so much her makeup was ruined, clutching the doctor’s sleeves, repeating, "She was just breathing a moment ago, she was just talking to me. She looked fine, with only a small cut on her foot that didn’t bleed much. How can she be gone now? Check again! Take her to the hospital!"
The doctor, with a mask on, could only explain repeatedly, "Mrs. Cao, Mrs. Luo’s heartbeat and breathing have stopped. Her internal organs have been shattered by the blast, even if taken to the hospital immediately, it would likely be futile."
"Mrs. Cao... my condolences."
Qin Huai saw Liu Tao lying on the ground, wrapped in a white cloth.
Her eyes were closed, her face wiped clean, and her lips devoid of color, looking as if she had merely fallen asleep, very peaceful.
Mrs. Cao collapsed onto the ground, weeping.
Luo Jun came in, followed by Mr. Ge with swollen cheeks and bleeding mouth, and an obviously hesitant Minister Cao. Faced with his wife’s hysterical behavior, Minister Cao didn’t stop her, only signaling with his eyes for the maid to help Mrs. Cao up.
"What happened?" Luo Jun asked calmly.
Qin Huai looked at Luo Jun’s expression, noticing that he, like before, showed no expression, his tone unchanged, disturbingly calm. It was as if before him wasn’t Liu Tao’s corpse, but rather that she had a strange illness and fell asleep.
Mr. Ge slapped himself harder, not daring to say a word.
"Old Luo, my condolences," Minister Cao sighed, patting Luo Jun’s shoulder, blocking Mr. Ge to explain on his behalf.
"The devils went crazy today, bombing twice. The morning one didn’t last long. Poor Old Ge fell and hit his head before entering the shelter. The message passed around turned into Old Ge being injured by the bombing and sent to the hospital."
"Your wife thought you were with Old Ge, fearing for your safety she ran to the hospital. In a rush, Old Ge made up an excuse that you went to the bookstore, so your wife went there to find you, right when the bombing started."
"Both of your household servants were also lost, their bodies I had taken away."
Minister Cao could only sigh, "Everyone has their fate. When your wife was carried back, she was still breathing. We thought we were lucky it was only minor wounds, called the doctor over, but who knew she wouldn’t make it until then..."
