Chapter 18: What’s Love_1
Chapter 18: What’s Love_1
The car finally drove into a local inn renowned for the best sanitary environment. It was nestled by a valley creek, amidst bamboo forests, featuring a two-story courtyard in the style of ancient traditional buildings.
She stepped out of the car. The bodyguards had found the best possible accommodation in town for the young masters, who were accustomed to luxury; everything had been replaced with new stock overnight.
"Miss Shen is also here; she wasn’t sent back to Shanghai."
Zhou Luchen strode in, just stepping into the courtyard, when he happened to see Shen Jing applying medicine. Sitting at a round stone table, her brow furrowed, she gently blew on the wound on her arm. The arm that should have been fair and smooth was now marred with several scars, some areas still showing poorly treated, lingering bruises.
When Shen Jing noticed his presence, she immediately panicked, scrambling to pack up the medicine before standing up.
The bodyguard looked in her direction. "That’s Young Master Chen’s room. Yours is upstairs."
Shen Jing froze, looking around in confusion. She then turned and hurried up the stairs, her embarrassment nearly making her stamp her foot in frustration.
Zhou Luchen, however, showed no interest in watching her and went upstairs.
Shen Jing had no idea Zhou Luchen would also be staying here; she had assumed the Zhou Family had magnanimously arranged this place for her.
Pushing open the door to her room, she clutched her chest and took deep breaths. She didn’t know whose room it was, but the decor was quite luxurious. It was rare for a small town to have such nice lodgings.
She sat down on the sofa, medicine in hand. Before she could even get comfortable, the door opened again. Zhou Luchen entered and started undressing, tossing his suit jacket onto the bed.
Their gazes met.
It seemed neither was aware the other was staying in this room. Only two rooms had been booked: one downstairs and one upstairs. Next door was a living room connected to a kitchen, and the room beyond that, which no one had entered, was a study.
Shen Jing hurriedly averted her gaze, lowering her head to continue applying the medicine. The ointment stung, and tears welled in her eyes.
Zhou Luchen’s voice was light and soft. "Afraid of pain?"
He had overestimated her resilience. After several hours in the interrogation room, she was in so much pain that her eyes were red-rimmed and her nose tingled. "It’s broken glass... it hurts..."
The young woman had probably never endured such physical suffering before, having been delicately raised. She was as tender as Jiaojiao.
Zhou Luchen rolled up his shirt sleeves and squatted in front of her.
He took her arm, picked up the ointment, and began to apply it.
Shen Jing didn’t even have time to pull her hand away. She struggled against his grip, but he forcefully drew her arm back. His hands, with their distinct knuckles and prominent veins, slowly massaged the area around the wound. "So now you know how to be reserved? How was it you clung to me those last few times?"
"Can’t a girl be reserved for a change?" Shen Jing retorted stubbornly.
He sneered, a hint of satisfaction in his voice. "In bed, you’re wilder than anyone. Is there any part of you I haven’t touched?"
He truly was... utterly wicked.
He glanced up, his long, narrow phoenix eyes slightly upturned. When he smiled, a hint of rakishness touched their depths.
This reminded Shen Jing of the image of him naked that night, images flooding her mind. Depraved, ferocious, tearing.
Shen Jing stared, somewhat mesmerized, at the man’s handsome face. He applied the ointment with a touch that was far from gentle, his composure almost frighteningly calm. He could clearly distinguish between an ambiguous gesture and a simple act of help. Whether this stemmed from the upbringing of a son from an aristocratic family or was a consequence of their one-night stand, Shen Jing found herself truly hating his current actions. Yet, selfishly, she didn’t want to refuse him.
It was like being desperately thirsty in winter and having only ice water to drink: frigid, yet leaving her with no other choice.
Zhou Luchen’s touch was heavy-handed; the ointment made the wound burn so intensely that Shen Jing let out a seductive low moan. Even in pain, she was captivatingly beautiful.
Zhou Luchen pushed her down onto the sofa. Her lower back slammed against it; the leather was hard and cold, sending a chill through her and causing tears to well in her eyes. He gripped her waist roughly and seized her chin, forcing her to look up.
"What are you moaning about?"
Shen Jing could hardly breathe. "The wound hurts."
The door and windows were open, allowing the cool mountain breeze to drift in. Confined on the narrow sofa, one above the other, they gazed at each other, an ambiguous tension in the air. Shen Jing’s shoulders were painfully tense. As she tried to avoid his stare, a delicate blush spread across her cheeks.
Zhou Luchen let out an unreadable laugh.
He asked her, "How do you want to be compensated for your injuries?"
No one played the game of ambiguity better than he did. Shen Jing almost misunderstood, thinking he was subtly protecting her. She looked into the depths of his eyes and sobered, realizing it wasn’t protectiveness. "You decide. He’s quite afraid of you."
Shen Jing agreed with Zhou Luchen’s unspoken approach: not to accept monetary compensation but to press charges to the fullest extent. Simply covering medical expenses was the most lenient form of settlement; people who publicly vandalized cars like that deserved to be jailed.
Zhou Luchen hummed in acknowledgment, then stood up and left the room, phone in hand, presumably to call someone.
Shen Jing collapsed back onto the sofa. She had actually thought Zhou Luchen might stay the night.
「Daylight broke.」
Two doctors from a city clinic arrived, reportedly summoned by Zhou Luchen. She had no idea when he had
