Chapter 37: Two Lifelines?

"You think it’s dangerous?" Evelisse asked, voice hushed.

Fluffy’s tail swished. "It’s not charged with dark magic. But it’s not harmless either. This is a message. Someone left this."

Evelisse’s heart skipped. ’Left for me?’

She stared harder at the rune.

It looked almost like a spiral—except with seven notches etched along its edge.

Seven like... her brothers?

Or like the kingdoms of the continent?

Fluffy circled it again. "It’s humming in frequency. I think it’s meant to activate only in your hand."

"What happens if I try?"

"You sure you want to find out now?" Fluffy asked. "In your pajamas? Without backup? No snack in sight?"

Evelisse clutched the shell tighter. "If someone placed it under my pillow, they already know where I sleep."

"...Point taken."

She inhaled slowly, then pressed her thumb to the center of the rune.

At first, nothing.

Then—

Vmmmmm.

The shell pulsed with light.

The world tilted.

Not physically—but in sensation. The silence in the room deepened. Her curtains stilled. Even the ocean’s roar muted to a hush.

And then...

A voice.

Soft. Echoing. Female.

"Princess Evelisse," it whispered. "Bearer of two lifelines. Listener of tides. Remember this place."

Evelisse’s breath caught.

’Two lifelines?’

The voice continued, threaded with something like wind and music. "Azure Bay remembers you."

Fluffy spun in midair. "That’s a memory enchantment!"

"What does that mean?"

Before Fluffy could answer, the shell pulsed again—and light spilled from its center, swirling around her like mist.

And suddenly, she was no longer in her room.

Not exactly.

The bed remained, as did the shell.

But now the walls of her room looked translucent.

And beyond them—Evelisse could see the past.

Faint, flickering like smoke—but unmistakable.

A woman stood on the beach below, hair billowing, blade in hand.

And facing her—

A young man in royal armor.

Evelisse’s jaw dropped.

It was Aldric and Seraphina.

Only younger.

So much younger.

The memory shimmered like candlelight in fog.

"Stand down!" Seraphina shouted.

"I don’t want a fight!" Aldric yelled back.

"Then why do you look like you’re challenging me?!"

"I always look like this!"

"Poor guy," Fluffy muttered. "He never had a chance."

Seraphina lunged.

Their blades clashed, but it wasn’t harsh—it was like music. Sparks danced, feet spun on sand, and though neither landed a strike, it was obvious they were testing each other more than trying to harm.

’This is it,’ Evelisse thought. ’This is the day they met.’

But why show her this?

Why now?

The image blurred, and the memory dissolved into mist.

Evelisse blinked—

And she was back in her room.

Shell cool again.

The light had vanished.

But her heart pounded like she’d run a marathon.

She looked down at the shell. Its rune had gone dim—but something else now shimmered on its underside.

A date.

One month from now.

"Fluffy," she whispered. "Why would a memory spell show me that?"

Fluffy hovered silently, tail low. "I think someone is trying to tell you the past... isn’t over."

A knock at the door startled her.

She stuffed the shell under her pillow.

"Yes?" she called, voice trying not to shake.

It was Marcus.

"We’re going for lunar training by the cliff. Was just checking if you’re alright?"

Evelisse blinked, heart still racing. "Y-Yes, I am. I just need some sleep and I’ll be a lot more active than Snugglewuff sleeping over there!"

Marcus looked over at Snugglewuff snoring by the side and little snot bubbles popping.

Marcus lingered a beat. "...You okay?"

"I’m alright."

Another pause.

"Don’t stay up too late again."

Then he was gone.

Evelisse exhaled, grabbed her boots, and glanced back at the pillow.

The shell was still.

But in her bones... she knew the peace wouldn’t last.

’I guess another day of fun, huh?’

"Yes, princess and you should enjoy it!" Fluffy encouraged, patting her on the head.

Evelisse exhaled, grabbed her boots, and glanced back at the pillow.

The shell was still.

But in her bones... she knew the peace wouldn’t last.

’I guess another day of fun, huh?’

"Yes, Princess—and you should enjoy it!" Fluffy encouraged, patting her on the head with one shimmering paw. "Besides, no ominous shell is going to ruin your perfectly magical vacation morning."

With a half-laugh, she pulled on her boots and tiptoed toward the wardrobe. Her mother had left out her outfit for the day—one of her soft, seafoam-green dresses with little coral beads sewn into the hems. It made her look like a baby sea sprite.

She liked it.

The manor was already alive when she descended the stairs. The scent of cinnamon, roasted fish, and melted butter wafted up from the terrace kitchen where breakfast was set. The table shimmered with breakfast platters—palm sugar rolls, oceanfruit jelly, fizzy dew-cider.

Most of her brothers were already there.

"Princess of the Bay awakens!" Jared announced, spreading his arms like a royal herald.

"She’s late," Lucien said without looking up from his teacup.

"It’s only eight," Callum countered. "Normal people sleep till at least eight-thirty on vacation."

Leo and Lance were arm-wrestling with fish sticks between their teeth.

Felix, as usual, was sketching. Today, it looked like a cluster of clams with little crowns.

Seraphina and Aldric were at the head of the table. The Queen wore a soft lavender tunic with her fiery red curls pinned up, her cheeks glowing faintly in the sunlight. Her presence radiated warmth and command—so effortlessly regal that it left Evelisse wondering just how long it took to become that poised.

She tilted her head, observing.

’She doesn’t even try,’ Evelisse thought. ’No royal wave. No dramatic pause. She just exists, and everyone listens.’

It wasn’t jealousy. It was awe. Maybe even a twinge of longing.

Evelisse straightened her spine slightly.

’One day, I’ll have that kind of presence.’

Fluffy whispered near her ear, "Princess, if you clench your spoon any tighter, you’ll bend it."

"I wasn’t clenching," she mumbled.

"You’re giving minor ’villain origin’ face."

"I’m fine, Fluffy."

Fluffy made a smug circle in the air and zipped above her juice cup.

Her brothers didn’t notice any of it. Jared was busy stacking buttered bread into towers. Lucien was reading an enchanted news scroll. Even Marcus seemed unfazed, sipping from a citrus cup and humming softly.

’They’re so used to this. Being here. Being them. I’m still catching up.’

She picked up her fork and focused on her eggs.

Just then, Queen Seraphina raised her hand.

’Ehh... what could she possibly have us do today?’
