A Serpent's Tale -
Chapter 256: School Start!
Chapter 256: School Start!
The start of the next week, in the middle of breakfast, Asty made her confession to Ash and the two proceeded to enter Ash’s room for the day and didn’t come back out till dinner.
Well, Ash came out and got the two of them something to eat. Poor little Asty was probably unable to move by now if I had to guess.
David and I didn’t let up on them at all the next day, making sure to thoroughly embarrass the both of them to the point of running away as red as tomatoes all the way to the tips of their ears.
We got a good laugh out of it when they came back and berated us. Neither I nor David cared for their hissy fit and just kept on laughing at them the rest of the day.
And before we knew it, it was time for the school season to return, which meant that I had to attend my first day in class as well.
To be honest, I was extremely nervous. Not quite as nervous as Asty, who barely has any experience talking to people outside of our little group, but still.
And the first thing that we had to do, was find out which home class we would be assigned to and where it was.
Why there was such a thing? I had no idea. What’s the point of a home class like this? Either way.
Oh, another thing they gave us when we went to find out our assigned classes, was receive our uniforms as well.
All the uniforms were basically just black kimonos unless. Not all of them were black, but a high majority of them were.
As for the one I got, its edges were laced with a purple gold trim. Asty’s on the other hand, were laced with a simple red.
After which I said goodbye to her and headed off to my home room. And the whole way there, I was getting stares constantly the whole way there.
And when I got to the home room itself, which is just a classroom, the people in there began staring at me also.
There were only eighteen of us in this large and spacious room that we were in, which looked like it could hold twice as many people in it, and the person at the teacher’s desk at the front was actually the headmaster surprisingly.
She didn’t give me much more that a glance before going back to some paperwork that she seemed to be working on.
As for the rest, they also soon stopped glaring at me so intensely, but occasionally turned to glance at me now and then.
I decided to sit at the back of the class where I would be out of the way and be less inclined to be the object of focus.
The class was going to start soon, and before it did, another seven serpentine entered the room.
And when they did, the headmaster got up and spoke to us all.
"Good to see everyone arrive early, that’s always a good sign." She commented as she made her way in front of her desk.
"As you all know, I am the headmaster of this branch of the Institute. And I will be your home room teacher for the foreseeable future."
"Thank you for this great opportunity!" Half the class burst out in appreciation, whilst the other half was silent, including myself.
And the half that did give their thanks immediately got angry when they realise the rest of us didn’t thank Miss Amoranaa. But before they could voice their opinions, Miss Amoranaa shut them up.
"Quiet. They didn’t do anything wrong and I don’t need your thanks. What I do need, is your attention." Her voice was firm yet commanding, there was an air of authority behind it that threatened consequences if not listened to.
Everyone then paid their full attention on her and listened to what she had to say next.
"Now, let me explain a few things. This home room will only happen once a week at the beginning of the week. All of you except our prodigy’s in here will be required to attend it every time. If you cannot attend due to being ill or some other affliction befalling you, please let the academy know as soon as possible."
"Keeping with attendance, you lot are also required to attend a bare minimum of at least one class a day, being the newest top-class students. You must also have a reason for skipping out on your chosen classes."
"With the exception of the three prodigies in this class, if you fail to keep up with attendance, you will be forced to transfer into a lower class where you won’t have as many privileges, and someone else will take your place."
"Do you all understand?" Miss Amoranaa yelled, which elicited a hearty response from all of us.
"Yes Ma’am!" Was how we all replied.
"Good, does anybody have any questions then?" Her tone softened considerably.
One girl raised her hand and asked, "Why are the prodigies exempt from the attendance rules?"
The headmaster answered in a calm manner, so as to not upset people who might be displeased with her answer, "Because they have a ninety-nine point ninety-nine percent chance of passing regardless. This is because they study well even when not here."
Another girl raised her arm, it was one of the other two prodigies in the class. To which the headmaster permitted them to speak.
She pointed at me and asked, "Why does she have a completely different uniform?" I could tell she was a prodigy because she had a gold lined kimono, something only a prodigy can have.
"That is because even among prodigy’s, she’s still in a whole other league compared to the rest. The last time someone of this calibre appeared, it was in the capital, at the head of the Institute. And that was well over a thousand years ago."
Every single one of us was shocked. None so more than me. Was I really that powerful? Was I really that good at... Whatever it is they saw within me?
The rest of the class then turned to look at me with gazes filled with awe, jealousy, spite, envy, respect. A whole mix of emotions were directed at me and it was really uncomfortable.
*Clap* *Clap*
"Alright, that’s enough staring. You’re making her uncomfortable." Miss Amoranaa exclaimed, drawing everyone’s attention away from me, which I was very thankful for. "Do you have any other questions that you would like to ask, or shall we move on?"
There was a moment of silence as we all tried to think of anything that we wanted to ask Miss Amoranaa. Thinking about it, I had nothing to ask as of yet.
And it seemed that none of us had any questions as of now so Miss Amoranaa continued her induction.
"Very well. If you ever have any questions, just raise your hand. Now, whilst you are part of this school, that does not give you any right to exert your position onto anyone, no matter who they are, be it some commoner, a noble, or a fellow student. You are not allowed to exercise your position for your own benefit."
Then someone raised their arm. "Yes, what is it?"
"I wanted to know if the prodigies had any special benefits being who they are."
"They do get some small benefits, like not having to attend as much, so long as they show up and do their exams. Aside from that, they are also provided personal tutors for a chosen field. But apart from that, they have no other benefits."
"What? No fair! We’re top-class students! We should also get private tutors!"
"Silence!" Miss Amoranaa yelled at the student that burst out in discontent. "You will behave or be thrown out of this class and replaced if you speak out of line! And do not complain about your own failures either!"
After that, she took a deep breath to calm down before she continued.
"Now then, continuing on from earlier, you are not allowed to bully anyone either. I shouldn’t have to say this, but it happens every year regardless of what the teachers say. But if we find out that you are bullying or taking advantage of others, then you will be punished. Repeated offence will result in being expelled!"
Everyone became nervous upon hearing that aggression in Miss Amoranaa’s tone with that last sentence. We could all tell that she was being one hundred precent serious with that threat.
"It’s good that you understand. Oh, also, if you get expelled, you will be banned from any and all branches of the Institute, understood?" She mentioned casually with a somewhat sickeningly sunny smile.
We all gulped and nodded in understanding.
"Good, good. I’m glad you understand. The last major thing that I want to impart unto all of you, is your timetable. These hold what lessons are being held when and where, based upon what classes you chose. If any classes happen to overlap, you do not have to worry about attendance so long as you attend at least one of them."
I could see one of the other prodigies start to raise their hand, but before she could fully raise it, Miss Amoranaa spoke up, "Yes, you three are exempt from this as I said earlier." The girl then put her hand back down.
And upon seeing that there were no more questions, our new homeroom teacher turned around and grabbed a pile of papers and began handing them out to all of us.
