A Serpent's Tale -
Chapter 232: Final Bid
Chapter 232: Final Bid
When the maid came back with a fresh pot of tea, I saw that her uniform was even more stained and dirty than before.
I had to fight the urge to do what I did earlier. And I did that by downing a whole cup of tea at once.
The maid was obviously not prepared for this but could clearly see my brows twitching in frustration and just filled my cup back up.
If I had legs right now, they would be twitching erratically right now.
Still, I had to control myself to not garner a reputation as some crazed madman or a sadistic psychopath or something along those lines.
So I tuned all of that out and just focused on the auction. And just listened as a bunch of noise flowed into my ears.
I nearly blanked out and fell over if not for the Gorgon maid catching me before I could.
"Thanks for that."
She merely bowed and returned to her position off to the side. Leaving me to listen slightly less intensely on the sound of the crowd outside.
And I was happy to hear that we were only one more item away from the scale after the current item, which was going for around two thousand gold or so at the minute.
In this time, I just drank my tea and contemplated my earlier actions some more, trying to figure out why. Just why I did them.
I know that it was because of my [Divine] blood, which caused me to view the maids as lower status than me, as I’m currently a V.I.P. guest at this auction.
And now, everyone attending said auction probably developed some kind of misconception that I was a tyrannical or violent and aggressive person.
*Sigh*
This isn’t how I wanted things to go. Why did they go the way they did? Just why do I have to be burdened with this curse-like influence?
I shook my head. ’No, complaining to myself isn’t going to get me anywhere. And I’m not in the right space both physically or mentally either. I need some alone time when I’m ready to tackle this. I don’t know where or when, but it won’t be now.’
"Is everything okay?" The Gorgon asked with a hint or worry.
I looked over to her and said, "I’m fine. Just... Thinking, is all."
"If you say so."
By now, the item being auctioned had been sold and the next one was up for grabs, meaning that the scale was the next item coming up.
And for that, I just hoped that people didn’t go silent. Or at the very least there isn’t a moment of awkward silence before the presenter announces my bid.
So, I waited for this item to be sold and for the next one to come up onto stage.
When it did come up onto stage, I decided to wait a little while and see how much it would go for before I made my bid. And prayed to the goddess that the silence that I was dreading didn’t happen.
The bids started at ten gold, instantly rising to a hundred, then five, then a thousand and then in increments of either two fifty of five hundred.
When it got to about six thousand seven hundred and fifty, that’s when I made my bid.
And so, I got up from my seat and yelled out from my booth, "Seventy-five!"
There was a moment of silence but thankfully it didn’t last longer than a couple of seconds as the presenter announced my bid like the professional that she is.
"And the mysterious lady bids seventy-five hundred! Does anyone want to fight her for it? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a space attributed item! Who knows how many used you could have for it? It could be turned into a storage device, you could use it to comprehend the Element of [Space] itself, or you could just have it as a cool souvenir."
"Eighty!" I heard a youthful and despairing voice cry out in an attempt to outbid me.
"Ten thousand!" I raised the bid quite high in one jump.
"Eleven!" But the youthful voice seemed undeterred. And I was starting to pick up the fact that is was a male individual that was trying to outbid me.
So I decided to go a little wild with this one. "Fifteen thousand!"
"OH! And what a shocker! Such a huge jump in bids! That’s the highest jump we’ve had tonight folks! Will the mysterious boy from the crowd be able to beat out mysterious lady from the booth over here?"
There was a silence as everyone waited for the other contender to make their move.
And after a fair while, just before I think the presenter was about to start closing the bid, the male voice cried out, "Sixteen!"
"Seventeen." I cried out with a calmness, knowing that I had won based on his hesitation to call out a bid for so long.
And this time, he didn’t have as long of a chance to think as the presenter spent half the time waiting before she closed off the bidding.
"Mysterious spatial scale! Going once! Going Twice! Last chance people... "SOLD! To the mysterious lady who bought the equally weird and confounding rock from earlier!"
There was an applaud which I wasn’t expecting quite frankly based on my earlier escapades. I didn’t welcome it but there wasn’t a whole lot that I could do to stop it anyways, so I just sat back down on the chaise and took another sip of tea.
"Maid."
"Yes?"
"Could you go and get the item I just bid for, for me please."
"But, the auction hasn’t ended yet. Y-You can’t get your item until i-it’s over."
"Ten thousand gold for you if you do it. I don’t want someone else stealing it from under my clutches."
She flinched, clearly hesitant to take my offer. "I-Is it really okay to be doing something like this? I mean, what if they get upset. Or something?"
"It’s fine, I’ll take the brunt of any and all consequences. Now get going, I don’t want someone to steal it, especially that guy that also bid for it. He seemed to want it desperately."
"I-I’ll go and fetch it then. Though, it may take a while."
"That’s okay."
The maid then left and I was left to contemplate once again.
I was now leveraging my wealth over someone who was clearly in a troubled situation, just for my own selfish desires. And I didn’t even care about the consequences.
Just what is wrong with me right now?
I mean, I know it’s my blood, but still, just what exactly is happening to me? I don’t want this to happen.
*Sigh*
I just want to be happy. Is that too much to ask?
Apparently.
Now I could only wallow in my own sorrows as I waited for the Gorgon to get back.

Eventually she did return with a box in her hands, which she presented to me. And this time, there wasn’t any changes in the way her outfit looked.
"Any trouble getting this at all?" I inquired.
"None, thankfully." She responded.
"Good. Here’s the gold I promised." I handed her a small pouch that held the ten thousand gold I promised her.
She trembled as she took it from my hand and started to cry.
"Thank you... Thank you..."
My lips curled upwards slightly seeing her cry from happiness before they dropped along with my head.
’If only I could feel the same...’
"And finally! The last item for tonight! A Real, living, adult, DUNE WORM!"
The presenter screamed louder than any other time she’d done so tonight.
"Provided to you by our mysterious lady benefactor over here, this Dune Worm is still alive, even now and is in perfect condition. Maybe a tad hungry by now with all of us so close to it, but don’t worry, we have the city guards to thank for keeping it in check. Can we have a round of applause for them and their due diligence please?"
The crowd applauded the guards for a bit before the presented then went on to start the bid for the dune worm. And it was hectic.
It started out at a hundred gold, instantly rising to a thousand, and the increases after that weren’t smaller than five hundred gold a piece.
Quickly, it reached ten thousand gold and was still rising at a rapid pace.
It soon reached over what I bid for this scale, which I had stored inside of my [Spatial Storage] by now when the maid wasn’t looking.
Soon, the bid for the dune worm reached over twenty thousand and was still going up, though, the bidding had slowed down considerably by now. It was still rising at a fairly quick pace, but there was a lot less people gunning for it now.
And not even a minute later it reached twenty-five thousand, the bids slowing down considerably by now as people gave up and now only the rich and noble people were bidding on it.
And after a few more minutes of bidding, the auction came to an end.
