Chapter 62: Life Before Amarok (2)

The Valeidio royal twins, had a reputation that extended far beyond the borders of their kingdom.

They were known not just for their charm, intelligence, and beauty, but also for the whirlwind they created wherever they went.

And nowhere was this more apparent than in the ever-revolving door of servants who attempted to cater to their needs.

Lucian and Julian had always shared everything, clothing, rooms, thoughts, and even their most private moments.

But there was one thing they could never seem to share for long: a servant. The task of serving two masters who were so alike yet so different had proven to be too much for every servant who had tried.

The twins were always united in their approach to their servants.

They didn’t ask for much, only everything.

They expected their servants to keep up with their fast-paced lives, anticipate their needs, and most importantly, serve both of them with equal attention and care.

It wasn’t that the twins were intentionally difficult; they simply had high expectations. After all, they had grown up with the best of everything, and they saw no reason why their servants should be any different.

The problem was that no servant had ever been able to meet those expectations for long.

Lucian was the first to notice when a servant began to falter. He would observe them closely, his sharp eyes catching every slip-up, every moment of hesitation.

Lucian didn’t say much when he noticed these things, he didn’t need to. His mere presence was enough to make most servants tremble with the fear of disappointing him. And when the pressure became too much, they would inevitably crack.

Julian, on the other hand, found the whole situation aamusing

He would tease the servants, pushing them just a little further, watching with a smirk as they tried to keep up with his whims. He wasn’t cruel, but he did enjoy the game of it all. He knew that he and Lucian were a challenge, and he relished in the fact that very few could rise to meet it.

The twins had gone through more servants than they could count. Some had lasted a few weeks, others mere days. Each time a servant left, the twins were left with a mix of frustration and amusement. They would share a look, half-exasperated, half-entertained, and then they would move on, waiting for the next poor soul to be brought before them.

It was on one such day, after yet another servant had fled the palace in tears, that their brothers, Theron and Eirik, decided to intervene.

Theron, the crown prince, was used to managing the kingdom’s most complex problems, but his younger brothers were a puzzle he had yet to solve. He found them in their chamber, Julian lounging on a chaise with a glass of wine, and Lucian sitting by the window, his expression thoughtful as he looked out over the palace gardens.

"Another one gone?" Theron asked as he entered, his tone a mix of curiosity and mild exasperation.

Julian glanced up, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "You say that as if it’s a bad thing, Theron."

Lucian turned from the window, his expression as composed as ever. "We simply have high standards, brother. It’s not our fault that they can’t keep up."

Theron sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "You two are impossible, you know that? How many is this now? Ten? Fifteen?"

"Twenty-two," Julian corrected with a grin. "Though I lost count after fifteen. It’s not that big of a deal, really. It’s more like... a process of elimination."

Eirik, who had been standing quietly in the doorway, finally spoke up. His voice was soft, almost hesitant. "Why do you keep changing servants? Is it really that hard to find someone who can handle both of you?"

Julian chuckled, taking a sip of his wine. "It’s not just about handling us, dear Eirik. It’s about understanding us, anticipating our needs before we even know we have them."

Lucian nodded in agreement, his gaze shifting to Eirik. "Most people aren’t cut out for it. They’re either too timid or too rigid. We need someone who can adapt, someone who isn’t afraid to challenge us when necessary."

Theron crossed his arms, his brow furrowing. "But surely you can’t expect perfection. No one is perfect, not even the two of you."

Julian gave a mock gasp, placing a hand over his heart. "Not perfect? Us? How dare you, brother?"

Lucian smirked, but there was a seriousness in his eyes as he replied. "We’re not looking for perfection, Theron. We’re looking for someone who can match us, someone who isn’t intimidated by our bond, someone who can keep up with the pace we set."

Eirik moved further into the room, his gaze shifting between his brothers. "But do you really need to do everything together? Couldn’t you each have your own servant?"

The twins exchanged a glance, and then Julian shook his head, his expression softening. "It wouldn’t feel right, Eirik. We’ve always shared everything, our room, our clothes, our lives. Having separate servants would be like... dividing ourselves."

Lucian nodded, his voice calm and measured. "We’re stronger together, Eirik. That’s why we need someone who can serve us both. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about maintaining the bond we’ve always had."

Theron sighed again, clearly torn between understanding and frustration. "I get that, Lucian, I do. But you can’t keep driving people away. The palace staff is starting to talk. They think you’re impossible to please."

Julian shrugged, unbothered by the notion. "Let them talk. We know what we need, and we won’t settle for less."

Eirik hesitated, his eyes full of concern. "But what if you never find that person? What if no one is able to meet your expectations?"

Lucian’s gaze softened as he looked at his youngest brother. "Then we’ll continue as we always have, Eirik. The two of us have managed just fine on our own. A servant is a convenience, not a necessity."

Julian’s grin widened as he leaned back on the chaise, clearly enjoying the attention. "And besides, it’s not like we’re asking for the impossible. We just need someone who can keep up with us, someone who can handle a little bit of chaos."

Theron shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips despite himself. "A little bit of chaos? Julian, you and Lucian are the embodiment of chaos."

Julian winked at him, raising his glass in a mock toast. "Guilty as charged, dear brother."

Eirik smiled softly, but there was still a hint of worry in his eyes. "I just hope you find someone soon. You deserve to have someone who can support you, who can make things a little easier."

Lucian placed a hand on Eirik’s shoulder, his touch reassuring. "We appreciate your concern, Eirik. But don’t worry. We’ll find the right person eventually. And until then, we’ll continue to enjoy the challenge."

Theron shook his head again, but there was a warmth in his gaze as he looked at his brothers. "Just try not to scare off the next one too quickly, alright? You’re giving our mother a headache."

Julian laughed, the sound bright and carefree. "No promises, Theron. You know we like to keep things interesting."

As their brothers left the room, Lucian and Julian remained where they were, the amusement in their eyes fading into something more contemplative.

"You know," Julian began after a moment, "Eirik might have a point. What if we really don’t find someone who can keep up?"

Lucian didn’t answer immediately, his gaze returning to the window. After a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice quiet. "Then we’ll continue as we always have, Julian. Together."

Julian nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Together."
