A Professor of Magic at Hogwarts -
Chapter 632: A New Beginning, Seventeen Magical Laws - (2)
The topic had shifted; it was no longer about teaching Luna Parseltongue, but whether they should accompany her on an adventure in the Chamber of Secrets. Harry didn't want to go; this adventure seemed fruitless since the real Resurrection Stone was already in Dumbledore's hand.
"...You have no idea how intense the training has been lately. Perkins secretly calls you a tyrant," Ron told Harry, who was dumbfounded. "Yeah," Ron nodded in understanding, "thanks to Katie Bell enlightening them about how Wood used to torture players when he was around. Compared to him, you're doing just fine."
"Maybe I should increase the training a bit more so they won't have time to gossip," Harry said through gritted teeth.
Ron shrank back a bit.
"Let's pick a night, go fast, and come back fast," Harry decided, and Hermione raised an eyebrow.
"If I understand correctly, you want to go on a night stroll—"
"Yeah," Harry gave a 'you finally figured it out' expression, "it's not the first time anyway. Can't afford to miss two days of Quidditch training on the weekend." He emphasized.
"I think it's a good idea," Ron said, "I don't want to sneak into the girls' bathroom during the day. I'm a prefect now. If something goes wrong, it'll be a big mess."
Harry also thought about the possibility of being discovered by Mafalda and her bees (some people's nickname for part-time wizards at The Quibbler). In his mind, he instantly drafted a sensational headline, 'Gryffindor Prefect and Quidditch Captain's Quirky Habits.' He shuddered, and his determination grew stronger.
"Tomorrow night it is!"Harry later told Ginny about this plan, and the next morning during breakfast, Luna happily ran over to thank him, almost letting slip the secret. Harry used a Silencing Charm to avoid any leaks, and Luna was pulled away by Ginny.
After breakfast, they went to Ancient Runes class. The class had entered a new phase.
"The progress is slightly faster than I expected, probably due to several large-scale detentions," Felix said. The students stared at the professor. "...Today, we will learn new content."
He suddenly stopped and surveyed the classroom. "Who's absent today?"
Students began to look around, and Pansy Parkinson raised her hand.
"Professor, Daphne requested leave and is now in the hospital wing."
"Reason?"
"She apparently mistook powdered Boomslang skin for parsley powder and added it to the food, causing symptoms of mild encephalitis," Pansy explained, sitting next to Blaise Zabini, the two showing signs of intimacy.
"Headache, slight consciousness impairment..." Felix continued, Pansy was bewildered, wondering why he was describing the symptoms.
"Is that correct?"
"Yes, it is."
But these symptoms are not exclusive to ingesting Boomslang skin powder. Felix thought. It could also be a confusion or memory charm.
Too coincidental.
Generally, the after-effects of a confusion charm are mild. If it only interferes with the rationality of the cursed person for one or two seconds, it may not even cause any reaction. However, if someone is under the control of the charm for an extended period—like old Crouch, who was affected by confusion and the Dementor's Kiss for a long time—they may end up with unclear consciousness and require professional treatment.
Felix thought of a person, the saint who followed in Grindelwald's footsteps, Nicole Noel. Felix had suspected before that she might be the true owner of the house-elf Bondy, so he didn't question her ability to contact Grindelwald. Now it seems she used Daphne Greengrass to deliver the message.
To know for sure, Felix decided to visit the hospital wing after class.
This also reminded Felix that saints are not harmless rabbits. They once had a tight organization and division of labor, far more than can be measured by 'force' alone. The same thought occurred to Harry, and he even knew more than Felix— he had seen Daphne meet a stranger woman and receive a gift box. That box later appeared in Professor Bagshot's office.
At that time, Harry thought the woman in the trench coat might be a relative of Daphne's. He looked at Professor Harp, expecting him to know something, but the professor had already started the lesson.
"...I'm glad to see that most of you have mastered the technique of wandless manifestation of practical runes and gained some flexible spellcasting methods. But that's not the point," Felix said. "Individual ancient runes are not outstanding either in power or adaptability. There are better spells to replace them."
"Next, you will be introduced to the practical content derived from ancient runes, a technique derived from rune circuits. Who wants to volunteer for a demonstration? Bonus points—"
Several arms went up.
"Anthony Goldstein." Felix called a Ravenclaw student.
Goldstein nervously stood at the front.
Felix waved his hand, and a dozen runic symbols appeared out of nowhere, closely intertwining with each other. "Try to grab it," Felix encouraged. Goldstein reached out—students below held their breath and watched carefully. His fingertips touched the entwined runic circuit.
The runic symbols seemed to be attracted to Goldstein, actively integrating into his skin. Following his fingers, the runic circuit crawled up his hand. Goldstein was startled, rolled up his sleeves, and was amazed to find the runic circuit imprinted on his wrist like a mark.
Goldstein blinked. "Professor? What is this..."
He was worried that whatever was on his wrist wouldn't come off. But the next second, he felt his body becoming weightless. Just a tiptoe, and he soared towards Professor Harp. Professor Harp dodged, and Goldstein flew towards the window.
"Don't use too much force," Felix reminded him.
"What?" Goldstein asked in a hurry. He reached out and tried to stop himself on the wall, but his entire body shot in the opposite direction like a weightless object. He was caught by someone when he passed by Professor Harp.
Goldstein's feet landed back on the ground.
"Try again," he heard the professor say.
Excitedly, Goldstein took a deep breath. "I seem to have grasped a trick." His current state was somewhat similar to the Levitation Charm, but he wasn't completely out of control.
He stood in place and jumped lightly. The next second, he found himself floating in mid-air, brushing against the ceiling. The students below looked short, gazing up at him one by one. He couldn't help but laugh.
He floated down in mid-air like a feather, taking the opportunity to greet his friends one by one.
Felix caught his wrist, steadying him. When he let go, Goldstein found the runic symbols on his wrist were gone, and he felt quite heavy, almost sitting on the ground.
"You can go now, Mr. Goldstein. Ten points to Ravenclaw."
"A runic circuit that reduces the weight of objects," Felix said with satisfaction. "Usually used in runic creations, but
why can't it be applied to the human body? Have you all learned human transfiguration by now?" Some students nodded.
"Think of runic circuits as solidified spells—of course, what you're about to learn is carefully selected and created by me. You'll find that it can be applied not only to objects but also, following the seventeen 'Runic Laws,' to daily spellcasting."
"And, it has its unique advantages, such as long-lasting effects, difficulty to counter, high concealment, and more."
